    Hi, I have just come across your channel. I love my M140i, it is so practical, when running stage 2 was mental fast. The first day I drove it the car never felt planted on the road, didn't give you that confidence, that is changing. I will be doing a video about fitting the front strut brace, wow what a change and the underbody brace kit. For £250 the car will become what I wanted. I didn't want the stand out look of the M2 and basically I have the same interior so have no plans on changing. I should of done the bracing kit then the remap, changes your outlook. I will hit subscribe :)

    I’ve got a m140i 3 door with manual gearbox stage 1 tuned 433bhp and I drive the car hard and don’t get this floaty feeling that a lot of owners mention. I’m wondering if this is just a trait of the quick shifting zf8 that upsets the car vs my slower precise left arm doing the gear changing

    I thought this was going to be another done to death hit list against buying the B58 but to be fair you made good points but lets face it, the 140i and the M2 are very different handling cars even though BMW try to craftily trick people by sticking an M badge on everything nowadays.
    Fact my stock m140i is faster straight line than an original M2 but when it comes to handling/braking the M2 wins hands down. I can understand you regretting not buying the M2.

    • @JustTheDriven
      @JustTheDriven  3 роки тому +1

      I wanted to try and stay away from the usual points people make to be honest, more personal thoughts... & exactly that, although the 140i is the M140i, there isn't much M about it barring the engine, it does feel like I'm hating on the F21 but I do really like the car, it's just disguised as something else. Being Stage 1 approx. 420bhp mine would be quicker in a straight line too but it's not all that often I get to really push the car, even at 300bhp you're going to have to get to license loosing speeds to experience the whole amount of power. Is the handling noticeably better? I know the M2s come with the diff which is going to help massively, but in terms of the turn in/grip etc?

  • @samcourt6228

    It’ll never be an M car no matter how much money you chuck at it but it was never meant to be; it’s more discreet, more practical as a hatch and costs a chunk less to run.
    The chassis isn’t the best, but it isn’t as bad as the internet makes out. By the time the chassis falls starts to shit itself you’re really pressing on and a floaty, bouncy rear end is the last of your worries. I think they’re pretty good looking. Mine is lowered 15mm, underbody brace, M Performance spoiler and side skirts, M style mirror covers and a Reiger diffuser.
    I was thinking that an OG M2 workday be my next move, but they’re expensive at the moment and suddenly an AUC M4 looks a lot more tempting and better value.

    • @JustTheDriven
      @JustTheDriven  3 роки тому

      Yeah I understand that, I just thought maybe BMW would've added slightly more influence from the M division when it comes to the chassis. You're right it's not as bad as the internet makes out, but it's nowhere near as good as you'd imagine or want it to be. They are good looking yes, having owned two F21s in the past, (preLCI) I can definitely say the LCI models are lovely.
      I do agree on the prices of the M2, they have shot up over the past 3/4 months due to dealers needing stock however the M4s are a good 3/4000 lower than the M2 which is something to take into consideration too.

    • @samcourt6228
      @samcourt6228 3 роки тому

      Just The Driven I don’t really think here was much influence from the M division. They just shoehorned in a six pot and stuck on see chunky brakes. I wasn’t really a fan of the pre-LCI, but the LCI is a good looking car. I much preferred it to the other usual suspects such as the Golf R.
      I think I’d want an OG M2 because they sound so much better then the Comp. Plus they’re about £10k cheaper which leaves plenty of cash to pop I some M4 seats to jazz up the interior. My 140 is stock power wise so I wouldn’t be concerned about that. The noise and looks would be for me because that’s the two areas that my 140 lacks for me. The M4 attracts me because they’re good value now bit I struggle with the S55 (it sounds awful) and I think the M3 is much better looking but there’s a lot less of them for sale. Although saying all of that, I’m trying to commit to Orpington my 140 for another two years.

    • @JustTheDriven
      @JustTheDriven  3 роки тому

      @@samcourt6228 Yeah good point there. Shame as the engine is an absolute masterpiece! Such a good lump. The Golf R & LCI in stock form are fairly similar looks wise, understated, subtle. My money would be going towards the OG, similar reasons although I'm not too fussed about the seats at this point. I did have a look at the M3/M4, but as you say the market seems flooded with M4s but much less M3s out there.
      It won't be an immediate switchover for me I'll likely have this car for another 12 months max before I start looking, unless I unearth a pot of gold and/or M140i values rise that is. Thanks for the input again 👍

    I got a 140i recently and it’s a great wee mod project for the money. For me it’s a perfect daily driver, recently got 40mpg+ on a long run and it goes like stink when you need to overtake without shouting about it. I do agree that it would scare the crap out of me if I was full on round the twisty’s but I haven’t bought it to do that. Good honest review and I like your wheels!

    Now on my third 140i in 3.5 years and I’ve test driven the N55 M2 and a used M4 because I expected them to be better than the 140. Yes, they are better but the difference is nothing massive enough for normal and fast road use over the 140.
    When you sit in the M2, it’s like sitting in the 140 as well, pretty similar cabins. Great video and nicely put, I relate to what your saying as I thought the M2 would be the logical step up but I was definitely underwhelmed by it.

    • @JustTheDriven
      @JustTheDriven  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment 👍 really appreciate it. Do you use your car quite often as a daily? I think if I were to be doing upwards of 12/15k per year I likely wouldn't be thinking what I am, whereas I only do maybe 4/5k a year max & whenever I drive the car it's usually to go out and enjoy it.
      That being said, I'm not saying I don't enjoy the M140 as I really do.

      Just The Driven
      Probably do about 8k a year and I have a manual E46 M3 for special occasions.
      The N55 M2 is no quicker than a stock 140 and if you went with the early version M2, you’ll always wish you had the later M2 Comp but that’s a big jump in price again.
      I’d say test drive the M2 but don’t expect it to blow you away after owning the 140. 👍

      brian jackson the M2 Comp helps it a bit by getting the M4 seats, but they’re a big premium over the OG. The M4/3 is quite a step up and earn used M4’s are looking good value.

    The M140i is a great drivers car that will still test the mettle of any driver when pushed to its limits. I don't think BMW the built a car to compete against hot hatches such as the civic but produced a rear wheel driven sports car that would be fun to drive and an awesome straight line speed. I've had my 140 for 2 1/2 years and is my daily driver. I accept its limitation and I just love getting behind the wheel and becoming the best driver I can with a car that's a bit of a wild card 😍

  • @sleepwalker31

    A very balanced video. And in my opinion, you're right i think you'd regret spending the extra just to buy a slightly faster version of the same car.
    Perhaps the M2 might feel slightly more stable but to be honest a diff will sort that on your M140i. As much as it can be stored on a bmw.
    Having said all of that, I've never owned either of the above and I'm not a bmw fan. Wish you all the best either way

    The M2 looks and feels special. The m140 doesn't. Worth 10k just for the sense of occasion everytime you start it up. I moved from a new m135 to a 3 month old og M2, kept it nearly 3 years. Got a golf r now and boy is it dull.

Unfortunately I only drove to work and back in it, less than 10k miles in nearly 3 years. Always used the wife's car at weekends. Didn't like leaving it in car parks. I had a manual and found it a bind, it's true what they say about bmw manuals, I had 2(e90 and an e92) that suffered from dmf problems, clutch judder, before I bought the m135 new in 2014 and that's what made me choose auto on the m135, said I'd never buy another BMW manual, kept that 3 years then i came across the M2, it's made for a manual, just not a bmw manual.

      Timing wasn't exactly right, insurance was coming back at £2000+ for the year, plenty reasons why I didn't go that route, that particular car I had a chance as was much cheaper than most on the market (which were way out of my price range at the time of purchase), however it took a long time to get the M2 sorted.
      It wasn't great timing in essence, by the time the M2 was ready to be sold (even then the owner wasn't 100% sure what he was doing with it) I'd already picked up this car and had it maybe a week or something.

      Hi mate, I’ve had the pleasure on track in both..... I took an m140i owner out in my M2.... and he was amazed and I couldn’t understand why.... he took me in his stock m140i and I thought I was going to die..... on the limit, you describe it perfectly, it felt floaty like I wasn’t sure what it was going to do next.... however.... the m140i is an amazing thing..... it’s not an m car though and anyone who thinks it’s remotely close in terms of feel and handling will get a shock on track..... the b58 is a far superior engine to the n55 (apart from the sound in m2 trim)....
