Grateful Dead - Wang Dang Doodle (Foxboro, MA 7/2/89)

- "Debuting in August 1983, Wang Dang Doodle was a sporadically-played addition to the repertoire until late 1988, when it found a more regular place in the rotation. It was always interesting, however, where it would appear in the set. In early days, it was a show-opener, and was most regularly placed in the blues-song slot early in the first set, as it is here. Occasionally, it would be found in the second set coming out of a bluesy jam, like the 7/8/90 version coming out of I Need A Miracle after Space." - David Lemieux

I was at this show and I remember them playing this song specifically because I remember the head behind me standing up and yelling, "WANG DANG DOODLE!!!!!!" before anyone else realized what they were playing. XD

That’s interesting. Always fun to hear no matter when it was played! ❤️
🥀🥀🥀🥀
Post the whole show please. It's great and it was shameful that it was taken down.
I LOVE this channel!! I just discovered it a few days ago, I wish I'd have found it a long time ago
This IS called “All the Years Live” correct?
How many 7/2/89 songs have you already posted? Come On man💀⚡️
Every day I have Grateful Dead in my mind.Their music fulfills my heart with warmth, kindness and bliss. I have to smile in random situations because I remember a sweet melody of Garcia. One of his creative magic moments that I can't forget. He had so many. Like the whole band. I see that I found something that let's me shine from the inside no matter what happens. And I can now give that shine to all around me.
Right On ✌❤🤗 !!!
Couldn't have explained how I feel any better, right on!
Beautiful
Me too. Right with you - @Natalie - cheers.
Yes I feel that way as well ...miss Garcia
Was there! Had to drive to Maryland after this show and go back to work after 21/2 weeks on tour! ❄️🌍❄️
‼️ WÖW ÖK NÏCE 🎸🤠💥
this era of the Dead rivals any in my humble opinion. post Jerry coma up to Brent's untimely passing is magnificent!
Undoubtedly this era was the best of the best of the best of Grateful Dead...!!! Many greetings...!!! ;)

Saw alot of shows during that time, I agree.
Without a doubt. The band was at a peak.
Meh. Not really. Good arena rock. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing special.
Tell Automatic Slim
Tell Razor Totin' Jim
Tell Butcher Knife Totin' Annie
Tell Fast Talkin' Fanny
Tonight we're gonna pitch a ball
Down to that union hall
Gonna romp and tromp 'till midnite
We're gonna fuss and fight 'till daylight
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
All night long. All night long.
All night long. All night long.
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
Tell who they call him Red
Tell Al I'll be seeing dead
They call old Pistol Pete
Tell everybody he meet
Tonight we need no rest
We're gonna really throw a mess
We're gonna kick out all the windows
Gonna knock down all the doors
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
All night long. All night long.
All night long. All night long.
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long
Tell Fats and Washboard Sam
That everybody's gonna jam
They're shaking Boxcar Joe
We got sawdust on the floor
Tell Chicken until I Die
We're gonna have one fun time
When the fish scent fills the air
Be snuff juice everywhere
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long.
All night long. All night long.
All night long. All night long.
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long.
All night long. All night long.
All night long. All night long.
We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long.
On fire and smokin hot. That was a great chunk time, that long moment that was the late 80's Dead Era. Jerry's gritty vocals, the enter play between Brent and Jerry, Phil's relentless bass and those two syncopated Devils working like clockwork madmen. Lets not forget Weir's vocals and his command of lyrical recall. I could listen, all night long.....Thanks
‘89 was lots of fun
Jerry’s back-up vocals are fantastic on this one!
I’m back and I was there! Drove down from Maine this was my second show! Oh to be 17 again!
I was right in front for this one! One of only 3x I was in the front “row”.
So, what's that got to do with the song
"only" lol. must have been great each time
Bet that was some show for you! Front row rocks!!!
@@artsamson4470you could say the same thing about 99% of the comments here, including your own.

Great song I saw them open with it at the garden, NY it was 1983 I believe.
What a jam
Jerry’s feelin it! Hollering and rock starring! Brent’s even in quiet amazement looking at him
Meanwhile Phil in his tucked-in whale t shirt 😂 I f*❤ing love these boys
Oh my.....the boys got down & dirty on that one & Jerry looking quite pleased about it all. '89 Dead....a peak moment in time.
Super Thanks In Advance...!!! ;)

A concert from 1989, boy! A long time ago!!
Jerry is on Fire here!!
bobby and the hairpins 😂 ...miss these days
Lol

Let's goooo!!!
⚡💀⚡
Wow Jerry vocals Wow hot Doodle
If you listen to the original it really makes this cover hit. One of the best covers ever
The GD's version is based on the Koko Taylor cover, which Joe Strummer called the best cover of any song ever. Jerry's vocals really recall her singing on this.
The great Chubb Carrier (Ultra Sound) at 02:45
❤️
wooo
Koko ❤
7/12/89 best show of summer I think
Yep, after 7/04
@@floepiejane That 4th of July show was my all time favorite of the 110 I attended. That Watchtower~Morning Dew~NFA was epic. Jerry hit high notes that I never heard before or since. Nearly perfect versions of every song played. The most soulful Row Jim ever too. LL Rain~Deal to end the first set. Deal was among the greatest versions ever played. So Smokin!!!
@@DennisCampbell777 and a super-fun encore of US Blues on the Fourth with fireworks. Such a great day. Oh, and 10,000 Maniacs were great too.
@@floepiejane And that Terrapin!
@@DennisCampbell777 It was my Got It moment for the Dead. It was so hot that day, but as Terrapin began, the rains came and finally cooled me down. Ahhhh, the Woodstocks that year 😏
Bill at 2:09 😎
....🥀
"that chick is a real good singer"
--- everyone before 1971
It's obvious Jerry had heard Koko Taylor before.
Not on the Howling Wolf level but cool!
This is extremely important.
true story, sir!
My first of many Wang Dangs.
This is one of the very rare times Dead and Company actually has a better version. I'm not lying go. Check it out. Its here on UA-cam.
Brent
Jerry is bouncing
Bob was a good vocalist (with a guitar), in the mould of Johnny Cash, Elvis, he was never a great guitarist, IMHO
His riff are actually pretty intricate for a backup guitarist. He walks the frets between most chords which is uncommon for someone trying to fill space
I love the Dead, but this rendition feels like it sterilizes away all of the violence and grit of the original. Something about 80s sound engineering combined with the stadium setup feels very disconnected from the juke joint origins of the tune. That said, it isn't a complaint, just a weird choice for them in my books.
One of my least favorite songs from the band sorry but just 1 heads oppion.
