Got a club boat C&C 34 at a well-negotiated value that will meet our needs for several years. My sailing started in 1958 but needed your educational series under $50K, built after 2000, a shorted OAL... Now that I know,I have to figure out how it applies to us. Many thanks for the series. Dear sir, i agree with a lot youre saying...... but not all off course.
I ve worked on sailboats all my life shipright at Contest yachts and hr yachts, and yachtservice etc.
I ve seen a lot of good and bad sailboats.
I love all boats but my opinion is the older models are not as big but they are defenetly build stronger as the most production boats these days.
I think the new fast and light sailers are fantastic fun but there is a big difference in crossing a (1) ocean or Sailing full time on big bleu.
Maybe a good tip too give youre viewers please do a serious rig hull and keel check.
    Best regards Machiel

I currently have a 32ft Marinette that my wife and I love. I'm going to retire in about 7 years and want to buy a live aboard sailboat. I want to spend around $40k and I hadn't given much thought about the water line vs the deck length. Of course I want to get as much bang for my buck and this channel is the most educational one I've come across.

My opinion on pricing. Car loan defaults are increasing and the average LTV has increased a lot. Banks are tightening up and will continue to tighten up. I think the boat market will behave similar with prices normalizing as the cheap money dries up.
Just my opinion as a arm chair sailor.

Do you think the boat market will come back to normal this winter or next winter?
Based on what you explain about the banks tightening up and car loans going up do the boat industry adapt to those market too?
40% up is really high is a lot of money if the boat market drops back to normal.

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor 2 роки тому +3

With Biden Inflation running in the double digits, prices on used boats probably WON'T go down - the cost of new boats will rise dramatically, making used boats look better than they really should. Just like the new/used car market, where used car prices shot up 40% during the past year.

I am learning so much from UA-cam and excellent videos like yours and I hope one day to travel via sailboat. God willing, I will somehow be able to afford a boat and live my dream. I am particularly impressed with the Jenneau Sun Odyssey 349. What a perfect little boat. If money were not an object, the Aluminum vessels would be ideal. I really like the Garcia/Allures explorers. People who talk shit about Beneteaus should look up that sailing channel with that gorgeous young couple who bought a Beneteau that had run aground. The cabin sole had heaved up, the grid work was completely buckled, but they bought it for pennies on the dollar, fixed it themselves pretty quickly with almost no experience repairing sailboats, and are currently sailing it back and forth across the Atlantic and all over the Caribbean, making gorgeous content. I can’t remember their channel name, but they’re sweet and ridiculously fit.
Also, the originial LaVagagabond boat was a Beneteau, and I don’t think anyone can say that Riley and Alaina didn’t sail the shit out of that boat. They sure did!

I wish you would address the difference in sailing characteristics associated with deck length to waterline. You make many valid points concerning cost of maintenance, slip fees etc. However, to some, particularly those planning on crossing oceans, comfort at sea and how a boat reacts to heavy seas is a primary concern.

  • @laurence9695
    @laurence9695 Рік тому +4

Fin keel and rudder are not recommended for océan going. Also, the surveyor will tell you that the bulkheads are not bonded to the hull, which means that the boat flexes so much, shortly, nothing closes, doors are off kilter, and the rigging just starts pulling the deck off, as the mast is just sitting there. But hey, it's your life so knock yourself out.

I have yet to spend more than $502.50 to buy a sailboat. I wait until the late autumn and look on eBay. I find a sailboat being auctioned off within 3 hours of my home that is already on the hard, where I don’t see water damage inside the cabin. When I see signs of good seamanship, I wait until the last 20 seconds of the auction, and bid what I’m actually willing to spend…normally $300, plus whatever document or handling fee the selling “charity” wants to tack on. If nobody else has bid, I’m reasonably confident that I can get it home. Things I look for: a trailer, an outboard, spare sails.
These are things I can sell for more than the price I’m paying for the boat.

    • @heyhandersen5802
      @heyhandersen5802 10 місяців тому

yeah, my view is prices are somewhat low. Oft ppl want them 10-15 yrs then unload them and this puts too many boats on the market. depends on size--- if the boat is just a bit too small oft weak price.

A balsa core deck is a very good thing and that’s how boats are made today. The small blocks of balsa are isolated from each other with resin in between. That means that any leaks effect only a very small area of the deck! There may, however be very old boats from the 60’s that have sheets of balsa or plywood core decks that can become soggy.

So I’m thinking of selling my house and buy a boat and sail with my dog. I would like to sail the Caribbean the first 2 years while learning. Then I would love to sail to Thailand and that area.
If you had a budget of $100K with cash put away for repairs when needed which boat would you buy? Something that I’m able to sail alone if I don’t have anyone with me. Thanks for any help. I just followed you and love your Vlog and will be watching more.

In searching for a boat.. there are certain creature comforts I'd want as a need. Most of the time my ventures would be toward the warm climates which I assume most do too.. so.. I would definitely like some A/C to cool me down when Im at anchor which puts me in a weird position with fuel & electricity.
So I may have to spend a bit more to get that.
While I want a vessel that can cross oceans, my main purpose of crossing the ocean would be to get to an area I can cruise around the coast or island hop.

Why do you tend to disparage brokers at the same time using their work product, listings & photos on Yacht World for your channel?
In my opinion, beam is the most important dimension for space & volume.
Older designs had long overhangs because the racing rules measured waterline length at rest, then when the boat was sailing and healed over the waterline length increased providing more speed.
I agree modern designs tend to be faster & offer better accommodations & space for similar a length overall.

That drop in grid presents issues with the bonding. They lay the grid down onto a bonding agent that hardens up. There is no tabbing. When you ground the keel the bonding agent gives out. That means you have to strip the entire main cabin and whatever get the grid back onto it's shattered bonding correctly then tab it into the hull. The problem is not the grid, or the hull it is the bonding compound that is used. I am sure this will get ironed out if it has not already been addressed. Ideal draft to me max is 5' for the Atlantic's west coast below the Chesapeake. Center boards can be very valuable. Scheel keel looks good to me. Yeah a few PHRF points off but man,,,to me,,,,the ability to sneak in closer to the shore before tossing the hook out weighs whatever issues a Scheel keel might present in open blue water. Let's get right down to it here. You have NOT presented a single vessel with a skeg hung rudder. You have not even presented a vessel with a protected prop. Even the Tartan 34c had a well protected prop but the 33 and even the 30 had better PHRF. So this is getting interesting but I do most appreciate being brought into the world of modern day production cruising products. Coastal cruising wears very thin. The tides and the river currents from the port you want to go into and the thermal land to sea air currents and vs vs and all the traffic typical on shelf traffic the peace and happiness never goes down over the shelf. I give it two days off N. America before I get comfortable.

Cannot say that I would agree with you on some of your ratings. There are a lot of additional data/information that should go into someone's decision, like say: capsize ratio's, comfort ratio, and more. The old/new decision is extremely complex and involves many factors. I do agree with you 100% that a boat has to work for the owner, and no one else. Keep up the videos.

I’m certainly no expert, but I think the idea with the bolt on keel isn’t that it’s just going to spontaneously “fall off”, it’s that if you truly plan on crossing oceans at some point the chances are you WILL hit something, or have some kind of mishap, and when that happens it could be catastrophic ☠️.

New to all of this. Im currently learning about sailing and the realities of owning, maintencing and SAILING a boat.
My question is about overall length vs length at the water line.
In this video, this ratio is referenced quite a bit. So, in reference to this ratio, i have a few thoughts and questions.
    1. Is this ratio a bias towards live aboard comfort vs sailabilty
    2. If a boat has a long overall length vs water line length, does this have an effect on "hull speed"
    3. We all know that there are no perfect boats, only comprimises. That being said, are things like "up wind" performance being taken into consideration.
Once again, im just getting my feet wet in this world and budgeting my money, so im simply asking questions, and defentily not talking s@it.
    Any info would be great.

The overhanging footage on the forward end of the boat, and on the rear end of the boat, is the result of RACING Rules for sailboats! The WATERLINE measurement, when the boat is stationary in calm water is what the sailboat racing rulebook focuses on. When healed over, the boats with overhanging area INCREASE their WATERLINE Measurement, and THAT INCREASE causes the boat to be able to GAIN SPEED!!! The sailboat racing rulebook does NOT penalize the boat 's overhanging footage! The overhanging footage is a way to "beat" the rulebook so-to-speak. So, if you're NOT racing, overhanging footage is essentially WASTE, as it provides just. a small percentage of true extra space within the boat, as compared to boats that have PLUMB bows and sterns.

    40$ a night more for 2 feet? That means that a 35 foot would cost 700$ a night? Or 21000$ a month?
Or is it 40$ a month more, that means 700$ a month. Here it is 12.25$ per foot per month on a year basis…

I'm not sure what you are referring to, when you go from 39 to 41 feet you bump up to whats considered mlst places a premium slip often costing 40.00 more per night or more. Montly slips are not charged a night rate as they are monthly but again going from a 30 to a 41 slip will cost you several hundred more a month and in numerous places over 1k more a month, yes just for two feet more. Slips are charged one of several ways, monthly, nightly, transient, short term, seasonal, yearly, and so on and it depends heavily where you are located. In key west expect to pay 1500 or month per month for a 42 footer,

Why a Hunter though when most boats are better built. And quite a few sailors who own Hunters without backstays say that they wouldn't even take them across Lake Ontario. Even very experienced boat brokers have warned us about Hunters. On the plus side they are very roomy marina queens good for light sailing on lake that isn't too bumpy.

Boat brokers are a joke as a whole so anything they say holds no water for me. I'm not saying they are fantastic vessels, they are how ever a great bang for the buck and more than capable. People say the same about beneteau and yet more beneteaus cross oceans than any other vessel in the world, all while people call them dock queens

If you have the money for it. Besides any boat can be refitted for a dream life. At any size. So lower your ego.
Bigger boats means bigger maintenance and bigger hole in the pocket. And bigger boats takes 3 or more times longer to maintain. The rewards are rare.
If you can’t cope with such fact, then sail life ain’t for you, unless your a multi millionaire and let others do your work.
As a sailboat owner, you have to be everything. engineer, electrician, plummer, carpenter, it specialist, nurse and doctor. Mechanical skill, and know how to repair sails and most things on a sailboat.
    Money talks.

@@oreospeedwaggindoesamerica6078 it’s a learning curve. Either someone teach, such as a friend, boatbuddy, boat neighbour, research on goggle, UA-cam channel.
I knew nothing about boats and boat life 4 years ago. Yet alone I learned everything from own practice, UA-cam and heck of a lot of research. That after I wasted 15 years in front of world of Warcraft game.until I realized that games gives me nothing in return.
So started to watch UA-cam channels about sailing.. thanks to sailing zatara recommendation.
As my second boat, money is always a spending cut on boats even on a budget, but i don’t give up. And always try to find cheaper alternatives than brand new products. And it’s also rewarding on a personal level.
Some of the great channels are
Sailing Uma, sailing sophisticated lady, SV Delos, calico skies, rigging doctor, sailing Aquarius. Sailing zatara, bums on a boat, Sailing GBU, sailing Ran , and many more. Start binge watch from scratch. You learn a lot on the way.
That includes engine repairs, electronics, electric, boat maintenance, finances, sailing techs, handling seasickness and illnesses on crew, what to do and what not.
But first, could you handle a boat on the open water, by you self, not everyone can because of internal fears and fobia.
Because you have to rely on your own selfs skills without help and assistance. Such experiences makes you grow to be more independent than rely on other.
Sure it’s time consuming. But it’s not too late to jump in.
I would rather say. Buy a smaller boat first to get the practice and experience of having a boat, to get the feel for it.
I own a Maxi 68 that i preliminary plan to set sail in October this year. (2022). By going south and shoot a vlogg on the way. It might be small. But it can handle the Atlantic well.
Hope this gives you some fresh meat to learn something new. Without paying for it. :)
