England's Best Ever Player

- Harry Kane recently stole headlines for passing Wayne Rooney as England’s top ever goal scorer, the problem is that historically speaking, it’s not true. While Harry Kane is obviously a fantastic player, there is another player from over 100 years ago that scored far more goals in an England jersey that are recognized by FIFA as official goals, the English FA just doesn’t feel the same.
Obviously, when matches happened so long ago it’s hard to know whether it should count or not, but there were a lot of players playing for a lot of countries back then and there was only one Englishman that was scoring enough goals to be well ahead of Harry Kane. You get to decide whether he is ACTUALLY the top scorer in England’s history, or not.

There was a petition by the public back in 2015 (or 2016 can’t remember- it was around the WW1 centenary) given to the FA to recognise his goal tally and records but they just ignored it. It’s a huge shame because he is Britain’s best footballer of all time!

The mentions of that times "kick and rush" playstyle made me remember the whole foundation that danish football is built on. A scottish team, regarded as the best team at the time, Queens Park came to Copenhagen in the year 1898 to play vs an unofficial danish national team twice. Football wasn't developed alot at the time in Denmark. Queens park won 8-1 and 6-1, however the important part was their playing style. It wasn't kick and rush at all, but based on short passing and more resembled tiki-taka today. People were in awe watching them play and it catapulted the developement of football in the entire country. A former player from Rangers. who played there for 10 years and won the scottish championship, David Mitchell amongst others was appointed to help develope the game in our country after those matches. That later resulted in the 17-1 victory vs France mentioned here and the technical side of football has since then been a foundation of danish football to the day.
Danish football is extremely cozy and far more entertaining than most leagues

Hardly forgotten mate, he has a statue outside goodison and the best suite we offer is also named after him inside. He also has a bar named after him and several other nods, including our season awards having been called the "dixies" in the past. Long gone but never forgotten on the blue (and white of Tranmere) parts of Merseyside.
Incredibly Dixie Dean only played 16 times for England - scored 18 goals though. Suffered from the same problem mentioned in this video - that England often only played the Home Championships each year.

According to transfer market Woodward stood at 1.89m (6ft2). at the time he was playing, the average height in the UK was 5ft5 so he was a giant.
Denmark's 17-1 win over France would stand as the record for the biggest win for a national side in an official match for almost 100 years. Sofus "krølben" Nielsen (krølben translates to curly legs) scored 10 goals in that match.

Well, first you kick. And then... rush?
Sounds like the "soccer" I played in high school. Blast the ball forward, and try to out run the defense. All break away attacks, no triangles, no wall passes, no strategy. Just like it sounds kick-and-chase.
Watch videos of Wimbledon or Sheffield Utd back in the 90s, you’ll pick it up, it isn’t actually yet far of what some teams like Liverpool play today

Not entirely sure if this is the same but I know some amateur teams of the 1800s considered passing 'unmanly' and maybe even unstylish football; instead they would dribble up the field with players following them and waiting to do the same when it bounced off a tackle. This is from Inverting the Pyramid.
Great work Z. Would love you to do one on West Auckland FC the team to win the “The First World Cup” as they called it in 1909. There was a film about it called "A Captain’s Tale". Briefly in 1908 4 teams were invited to a tournament in Turin Italian, Germand, French and Swiss, but it was seen as lacking prestige without an English team, so 1909 cue a team of miners.
Well that is sad, a career that should have been celebrated for decades longer not remembered due to politicing. Good video Z.

As a spurs fan who has delved into our history a lot I didn’t even know he played for spurs and didn’t know anything about his career. I’d only heard his name mentioned when Kane broke the England record and the list of top scorers was going around on socials.
Quite insane to think spurs have had some of the greatest goal-scorers this country has seen. Vivian woodward with everything mentioned in this video. Jimmy greaves who is the top scorer in English top flight history. Last but not least Harry Kane, current spurs and england top scorer and soon to be top scorer in premier league history.
Another weird/cool thing that links these 3 players, (depending on Kane’s transfer rumours to Chelsea) they could all have played for both spurs and Chelsea. Vivian moving to spurs and later to Chelsea. Jimmy greaves who come through Chelsea’s academy, then moved to ac Milan for a year before coming back to England and joining spurs. Kane who came through spurs’ academy and could move to Chelsea if rumours are true.

Even if they don't give him his caps and goals, they should at least hold him in higher regard for the Olympics wins, given that England has never won it since.
Seems nuts to me considering how many professional players were in the country that England was calling up Amateurs and non-league players up to the 1930s because some people could make more money doing a normal job than by playing football.
1. Imagine the average person earning more than a footballer even at league 2 level now, just seems a world away
2. England call up players that don't even play (Maguire, Phillips) over players playing regularly and in form. This guy and people like Edgar Kail scored in debuts and rare outings, would be interesting to see what would happen if the team was picked based purely on form for one international break

Amateurism was over in England by the 1880's already, and followed an era of hidden payments called "shamateurism" in the 1870's. The very league championship was pushed and founded by the first declared professional teams. The average player salary was higher than the average worker but not that higher. Most professionals kept a side job, and was advised to do so.
Still amateurs kept existing, Vivian Woodward was an architect from a wealthy family and didn't need nor want to be payed

A fascinating story of a English football star who should be more widly remembered and should have been better treated by players and others in his final years. Lets not forget also a WW1 war verteran, that alone deserves recognitian by the FA.

So, you're American and I'm Salvadoran. Both from Concacaf. I was wondering if you've heard of a football player by the name of Jorge "Mágico" González?
I've been following you for a while and I've noticed that you frequently cover stories of players that are forgotten such as the North Korean wonderkid, so I was wondering if you'd be interested in reading a little bit about him?
He is a legend at Cádiz and arguably the best CONCACAF player to ever play, even Maradona himself said that El Mágico was "the best player in the world" and that "he was the one player better than him". And I'm pretty sure we all know how huge Maradona's ego is.
A little fun fact, Scaloni (yes, the Scaloni that just won the World Cup) came to El Salvador to praise El Mágico and even took pictures with him because "he was a valued player in all of Spain".
El Mágico even had a trial with Barcelona but he didn't sign for them because he'd rather be a party guy and not treat football like a job, rumours even say they didn't sign him because there was a fire alarm in the hotel they were staying at and they weren't able to find him, and when they found him, he was just chilling in his room with one of the waitresses
Lastly, to quote Maradona himself; "During training we all tried to imitate him, but we couldn't"
I also forgot to mention that he was part of the infamous 10-1 Hungarian demolition of El Salvador

There is a journalist here in Brazil called Ubiratan Leal. An excellent football historian and here would fit one of his theories: Football needs a division of eras. It would make it easier to understand how times are, how ideas are, how competitions are, etc. etc. From understanding comes preservation. From preservation comes the continuity of these stories. And so it goes.
