    I have this car and I've done some work on it myself (struts, shocks, end links, basic maintenance). Would never do this, but I like watching vids to understand how the car works. I had no idea that the solenoids and the connections are all in contact with the fluid (?!). My trans had its first service at 65k and another at 113k. It shifts great and fluid is nice beet red at 127k. I want a new car, but this thing is reliable, paid for, and in great shape so I'll just keep driving it to save money. These cars are ugly, but can last if you take care of them. Unfortunately most people buy them cheap, abuse them, and throw them away. 08-11 models are solid, but definitely don't buy a 12+ with an automatic transmission as those will give you constant grief.

    Hello, thank you VERY much for this fantastic video!! So I’m reasonably handy (changed the valve cover gasket in my 2010 Focus at 145,000miles) but have always been wary of opening up the trans. Your video definitely gives me the courage to do this type of work. My question to you: I’m at 190,000 miles, I’d say about 75% highway miles, and zero trans issues. Should I preemptively change those solenoids and filter now? Also, I’ve never opened the trans and never changed the fluid. My two competing thoughts are: “If it ain’t broke…” and “A little work now will save me later.” Which “thought” do you think I should listen to? Thanks!!

    Mines been acting up few times itll just slip out of nowhere or struggle the speed up to shift gear usually have to let off the gas or accelerate harder and it works. Sometimes will kick when you shift from reverse to drive. Ive had it slip if you accelerate to hard. Most of the time it drives fine just have to drive different. Don't have a way to read trans codes maybe twice it has thrown the wrench light. Thinking about tackling this 164k miles on my rusty turd. Ive used it like a work vehicle and truck dont stuff it was not meant for but never really beat on it.
    Fluid is still red but at some point it ended up a quart ish low somehow..with mo sign of leaks.
    Hopefully if this is the issue i wont ruin the trans by dropping the pan and have to get a junkyard one and put it in.

      A&B on/off solenoids are the same as the regular A & B solenoids, on/off just tells you what they do (as in they switch on/off under pressure). Some manufacturers label them differently and price them differently

    • @jimmyjimjims7483
      @jimmyjimjims7483  2 роки тому +1

      Usually you replace all the solenoids at once to avoid having to re-open the transmission and do the job again. If one solenoid died the others are dying or are about to so I always recommend doing them all at once. If that still doesn't work the trans has a mechanical issue like a valve body problem or a problem with the torque converter which requires rebuild/removal. These are famous for having transmission issues as they age and the newer ones have TCM (transmission control module) failures quite often.

    • @jimmyjimjims7483
      @jimmyjimjims7483  5 місяців тому

      The wrench being on indicates a failure within the transmission or transmission module, the code you're getting is for a bad A solenoid. If one solenoid (like A) goes out then eventually so will the others and the transmission will stop working. Also if you're A solenoid goes out it can cause the car to shift erratically and eventually damage/destroy the trans itself.

Please help I appreciate your feedback

    • @jimmyjimjims7483
      @jimmyjimjims7483  2 роки тому +4

      So you had a code for shift solenoid C, it was replaced and now its having the same issues? Solenoid C is "the big one" it controls overdrive and the forward clutch for each shift so if that solenoid fails or is bad you get no 4th gear at all. Does it go into 4th gear at all? Usually P0760 is a code related ONLY to the shift solenoid and nothing else so its possible this shop used a cheap aftermarket solenoid that isn't doing the job as well as it should. I always recommend replacing ALL the solenoids at once not just 1 or 2 to insure it shifts correctly because if 1 went out the others are right behind it. I would check the transmission fluid, make sure its level and if it is I'd consider replacing all the solenoids with good quality ones. Because the only other step after that is a whole new transmission...as weird as it sounds new parts CAN be bad out of the box (especially cheap ones)

    • @dennissehernandez7779
      @dennissehernandez7779 2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jimmy , yes it still Able to go to fourth gear , it just when I go to D drive gear it make a jump only on that gear, which I taught when the mechanics change the shift solenoid c it will solve the problem but it's the same I'm going to buy the kit from dealer and hope by changing all the solenoid it will shift better on the fourth gear, the mechanics seems clueless and said is a wire issues they think? They don't know

    • @jimmyjimjims7483
      @jimmyjimjims7483  2 роки тому +1

      @@dennissehernandez7779 So it will go into and drive in all 4 gears? Does it jump when shifting from N to D or when driving? If it jumps from N to D it can be a bad motor/trans mount a lot of times, if it does it while the car is driving that sounds like the solenoids. Very unlikely a wiring issue if the car is jumping into gear, the cheapest option is to change all 5 of the solenoids (and the filter) and see if that fixes it, a good shop should be able to check and verify that the TCM (transmission control module) is working properly and not causing a "wiring" issue.

    • @dennissehernandez7779
      @dennissehernandez7779 2 роки тому +1

      So I ended up going back to the mechanic who did the job in the beginning to change all the solenoids and it still went from neutral to Drive a small jump, and the check engine light and the wrench light stay on indicating shift solenoid c problem the mechanic shop never let me know that they didn't the machine to check the transmission so at this moment I'm going to travel to Ford Mechanic and have then check the transmission so they can tell me what's going on I'm hoping it's not the motor/ transmission

      @@dennissehernandez7779 They definitely should have scanned the transmission with the machine before going into it, at this point (having changed all the solenoids) the only real things left to cause a problem are the transmission computer and the torque converter, I hope Ford is able to give you a complete diagnostic on it but I would suspect at this point the transmission has a bigger problem (such as the torque converter) or something

    N ga by n e chance? Tired of working on this car myself, as well as dealership, as well as a shop. Yet to drive it, but I think my solenoids are bad CDE or so from my Bluedrive which I can't find now. I've replaced a few things myself including ECM, ignition key cylinder work, speed sensor, battery, spark plugs, ignition coils, changed the valve cover gasket, air filter, ait cabin filter, but think I need a new valve cover because a screw won't tighten well. I think that's what messed up the solenoids (oil leak into plugs) and I saw a comment about someone who works on fords about this messing up solenoids. ECM change was easy, but somehow wrong vin was imputed either by ecm company that programmed it or locksmith, I have no idea :-( Ended up paying the dealership like $800 to figure this out! Last shop cleared codes after they changed my brake module (I likely didn't need a new ecm at all, brake module always the issue) and told me to drive it, but I think it really needs replaced. Had the wrench sign and all. Won't pass emissions. I need to get it fixed, so I can sell it and just keep my 2020 Toyota corolla! Feel like I fix this vehicle everyday, I must have gotten a very bad one.

      Is just Reverse not working? A lot of times this generation of Focus had issues with the end cover rings putting grooves in the reverse clutch drum. You should have a check engine light or little wrench icon in the lower left corner, scan the car for codes and you should find a transmission code. On these it's NOT very often a solenoid failure that causes no reverse. Low fluid may contribute to no reverse but often the clutch bands inside the transmission are just worn out and the unit has gone bad.

      @@nieluszelaya9782 P0771 is a trouble code for shift solenoid E, which in your case means the wiring to the solenoid is damaged and it will not engage reverse, you must repair the damaged wire and check the last solenoid (E) for damage. This is probably the cause of having no reverse, make sure there is no hole in the pan, or pieces of metal loose in the pan.

    You are correct. Dont buy a ford focus! However in 2019 i did buy a 2010 ses a year ago that had only 36k OG miles on it while i was in California for a few months. It seemed like a smart alternative to a rental. I figured i drive this ford for minute and then get rid of it. Then COVID 19 happened and now im stuck with this car for now. Theres nothing wrong with my car yet, but im doing research on what troubles i can expect in the future if i keep this a 3rd car. Thank you.

      The only main issues for a 2008 - 2011 Ford focus Duratec 2.0 is the Valve cover gasket , possibly a coil or 2 may give you a little trouble , or the oil pan gasket other than that shouldn't have any issues with it , I have a 2008 and a 2011 focus and never had any issues with either car and the 2008 has 250,000+ miles on it and my 11 just hit 105,000 . Thankfully these cars don't have the powershift dual clutch automatic trans like the 2012 and up they have a ton of issues .

      my gf's 2003 focus wagon has over 350,000 mi on it.. she bought at 150k and has put 200k mi on it herself... its an awesome Handling car that coprners like its on rails with steering feel that any newer car would die for!
      its had the timing belt replaced at 150k and that was the Original one! I replaced it myself later at 300k.. as far as issues, the engine itself is sweet, smooth torquey and hers is a zetec.. no burning of oil at all though it drips alittle here and there...its the Other things that can be tedious on this car like the plastic thermostat thats always breaking and leaking, All the motor mounts go bad on these cars,the infamous Alternator replacement nitemare becuz when these go, you quickly find u cant just unbolt it and remove it..its like a Rubics cube trying to squeeze it outof not enough space..usually, u have to undo the passenger motormount and Shift the engine aside a few extra inches to get clearance..WTF? then theres the also infamous rear drum bearing failures and drum squeal..powersteeringline nitemare replacement, battery cable harness replacement becuz the original started to go up in smoke..leaky valve cover, rear tires having way too much factory camber and toe in so they were wearing out wayy too fast...it can be corrected with adjustable aftermarket camber arms... anyway u get the idea.. the basic engine is a jewel but its addon components can cause troubles and theres more I havent listed.. I do all the work myself so Ive learned all its weakspots...not recommended to get a hi mileage one unless u can wrench urself.. cost u a fortune otherwise.

      @@SonnyWolfSmiles Hello, thank you for your UA-cam post about the Focus cars. I have a 2010 and I had to change the valve cover gasket at about 150,000 miles. Started leaking and oil went into the spark plug wells. My question to you: I now have 190,000 miles, it runs great with zero transmission issues. Should I change the fluid (and maybe the solenoids and filter) or wait until I sense some slipping or hard shifting? The fluid still seems “normal” and not discolored. My gut says “if it ain’t broke…” but my logical brain says maybe doing that little maintenance will buy me more time longer term. Thanks for your help

      @@jimmyjimjims7483 I wouldnt recommend ebay either.. they seem incredible sketchy.. you will see them being sold as New ,yet in fine print they will say remanufactured.. so wtf? which is it? amazon is almost as bad but returns should be no issue there... you Wont find motocraft ones, genuine ford, from any of the sellers.. they are almost all refurb ones or IF they are new they are china knockoffs.

    Just dropped the pan on one of my kid´s 09 Focus. He suddenly lost ALL gears....suspected TCM but no codes. Looking inside, the magnet looks like a fucking porcupine! Going to change filter (which would barely pass water) and clean out the solenoids. Hope to get lucky and not have to clean the goddamn valve body and /or replace the solenoids. I know the solenoids are not bad but might be clogged with shit like the filter. Looking at the pan and block, it has NEVER been serviced!
    We will see.....
