Well compared to the history of the planet then Roger Federer is an infant. Seriously, in today's day and age with advances in physiotherapy & recovery & strength training & stretching etc, provided that there are no major injuries and the desire is still there, why can't men & women keep in top competitive shape into their 40's and play at the top of the game? It's time we changed the rules and our mindsets of who is too old blah blah to compete and stop giving these athletes a hard time about their age.
@Goran Matulovic Because of societal conditioning. We are taught by society that they older we get then it is accompanied by physical decline. This may be true for athletes but I have a suspicion is more to do with wanning desire by the athelete to do whatever it takes to keep at top physical condition as their body moves through space more and more. However the age card is a taught conditioned response because we look at the obvious 'differences' between the winning and losing athlete.
All I’m saying is that it is very surprising for a 37 (almost 38) year old winning against players that are almost 20 years younger than him, that just proves how he has been able to create a playstyle that doesn’t take a big toll on his body.
He is a super-human indeed... at 38 yo beating players almost half his age is just unbelievable for a normal human being. He along with Nadal and Nole are truly blessed. We should be proud of being alive at the same time as these great persons.
@@rksleung Nole will play until he is 40. So Alcaraz and co. will have to wait at least another 4 years until they can start claiming Grand Slam titles without any of the big 3 having to say something about it. Federer is 38yo at this time, and he is beating with no mercy Casper Ruud wich is a futur Top 2, and multiple finalist in Grand Slam. Thats why the Big 3 is legendary, they were the best at a young age, and the best at an old age.

Maybe as the rounds progress there will be longer highlights since there will be fewer matches to cover. After all it might just be one guy/girl doing all of these.
Even though Ruud couldn't offer too much resistance, this was still a strong match from Federer. One thing I think was really smart was how Federer started really attacking with his backhand, even when he was out of position and would normally have sliced the ball. Instead, he kept trying to belt the ball with top-spin and rediscover his form on the backhand side. A stroke of genius I think, especially if he is going to end up facing Nadal. Federer has had the wood on Nadal in their recent meetings and a big part of that has been his willingness to step in and attack with his backhand. Even though he made a few errors, it looked like he was practising, knowing that this is what it is going to take to win the tournament. I really like what I'm seeing from Federer so far. Makes me wonder why he didn't come to Roland-Garros last year when he was in even better form.
connorism69 I thought I was the only one who observed it too. Roger is playing some really strategic tennis, saving energy and very calculated on shot selection. I also noticed what you said about the BH, he seems to be coming into the net with it a lot- practice for what is ahead certainly. His FH has been so impressive in the last 3 months and in this tournament I love that he is able to maintain the Baseline rallies and win points from there without sacrificing his position. He is quietly cleaning out his opponents. All eyes are on Nadal and Novak. I hope he gets to play Tsitsipas here again and reach the SF.
I agree, however I would argue that Federer is has played better in 2019, hitting the ball with more authority than he did in the early part of 2018. He won the AO and Rotterdam last year without being pushed much and then he wasn't great in IW or Miami. This year he played well against Tsitsipas in AO and he's made 3 finals since, winning 2 of them. He is definitely capable of making the semis in FO, it's been great seeing him back on clay. But he would need to play perfect aggressive tennis on the forehand and backhand side if he wants to stand a chance against Nadal.
incredible for his age. Although at the end you can see he looks a bit worn, or maybe relieved that its over. Each hard fought win takes a toll at this age
