Hola Ceci, thank you once again for another professional & informative reaction & analysis. I loved that Angelina re-arranged the lyrics to better suit her age & voice. Amy Winehouse is my favourite musical artist of all time, so I had to hear this version, it is a little different but the essence is there, Angelina's voice is very suitable for jazz among many other genre's. Ceci, this video is of the second take of the song. Someone told, that after the first take (there is a video) Angelina was NOT satisfied, she said YUCK. You might see tabbing her arrangements and lyrics, she was a little grumpy with herself. It was told by someone at that recording, that because of her, they did it a second time. I agree that the musicians are spectacular. It's almost as if they are joining AJ's 'challenge' in these covers to do even better. This recording also reminds me what a great ear AJ has, and she can merge what she hears with what she's capable of singing, with all of her breathing and vocal tools.
Great reaction Ceci. What impresses me about this particular performance by Angelina is that she was told by her mother that if she wanted to sing this song she would have to re-write the lyrics to make it more age appropriate. Angelina (from what I have read) then spent about a day re-writing the lyrics on her own. Not only did she re-write the lyrics but the new lyrics still fit the original structure of the song to the point that the orchestra was able to basically play the mostly original score without many changes. Still waiting for you to react to the acoustic version of her first original song, "What is Life". Keep up the great work.
Ceci, not only did she totally rewrite the lyrics in less than 24 hours, but the national TV 2 channel was following her the day this was recorded. The day began with her family taking AJ, & a few of her school friends, to a closed Amusement Park, specially opened for her to ride the rollercoaster. Then off to this recording session where the 10 yo has the Norwegian Radio Orchestra waiting for her. She walks in, kicks off her sneakers, sings 2 takes of this "new" song & she's done. Just another day at the office for this Superstar.
If the sing were a modality in the Olympic Games and Angelina entered to compete in different musical styles, she would surely win many gold medals! Thanks Ceci, I really love your reactions and comments!
You should watch the video before she sang this. She spent the day at the park with her two friends and of course with her family She said she did not want to ride the roller coaster but eventually did but did not feel too well after the ride. Then they showed her in the car with her two friends and she was putting the finishing touches to the lyrics of this song which she changed. When she arrived this hall where she sang, the musicians were already there. She went to each musician, shook their hand introducing herself and I would think thanking each one for coming and playing for her. The hall director said it was uncanny because it was like talking to an adult in the body of a ten year old. Then she sang and when she finished the musicians were applauding this ten year old. Maybe a typical day for Angelina but not any other, even an adult.
There is no question that she is a fully formed professional musician, and was from eight years old, if not earlier. I am not aware of a vocalist of any age or any era who possessed her ability to understand the essence of what makes a song special, then have the tools to produce a version of the song that is completely true to that essence while still being her own. Even more amazing, she knows it, everyone who accompanies her knows it, and we know it. We are privileged to be witnessing a living legend.

Angelina was just 10 in this one. She rewrote the lyrics herself to make them appropriate for a 10 year old to sing. Something I always like about this one... on the surface, the original song is a pretty 'dry' song. There is not a lot of dynamics in the melody. It seems to take forever to get to the chorus (like there's an extra verse in there or something). And even with all that, Angelina is able to add so much little subtle details that it gives it a new life. There are certain things she does here that you have to listen very closely to hear... but when you hear them it is pure beauty.
Ceci, AJ maintains vocal fry through her vibrato, from her chest voice to her head voice, all the way through her runs. And when she moves from an open vowel to a consonant at the end of a riff -- the way she handles the word "moon" is a good example -- she effortlessly handles the transition from fry on the vowel to closed ("hummed") vibrato on the consonant with such skill that it's just perfection. I think this is one reason why so many listeners compare her to Amy, who had the same remarkable ability.
You can change the lyrics to make them age appropriate but you can't change the sensuality of this masterpiece by Amy. She was a genius and a great loss. It's amazing that this little girl could sing this song with so much understanding at such a young age. A true gift.
As you have noticed and noted #AngelinaJordan absolutely loves singing. And although this is a rehearsal it shows just how much musicians love to play with and for her. Her unassuming and graceful personality is much more attractive than those of self-absorbed divas that have temperamental attitudes. Because Angelina is a Divine Gift others in the art form are pleased with her craft. And those of us that review her music videos are compelled to become followers.

Hi Ceci, have you come across Angelina's rehearsal for 'A Portrait Of A Child (Man)' with English subtitles? Angelina changes it from 'A Man' to a 'A Child' but it gives you a lovely understanding of her professionalism at nine. If you have not then it would be a great reaction for you.
Again, Ceci came through for us. This was indeed an exceptional performance. Adult orchestra members don’t make Angie anxious nor do they intimidate her. She assumes the leadership position that comes with the job and has worked with so many musicians that she knows what works for her and for a collaborative process. I think that I have seen so many vids of her that I can honestly agree with her that she gets excited, not anxious/nervous. Even she had “normal” skills that would be great, but her talent and skills are exceptional. Hence the whole child prodigy thing. I love watching and hearing you Ceci. I learn a lot.

She re-wrote and arranged it, making sure the orchestra was properly interacting from start to finish. It took one day, for her mom realized late in the game that she wasn't pleased with the dark insinuations of the original song. This girl, once again, proves what a musical genius she is. When you add in her chameleon ability to cover the same vocal aspects of the original artist in a way that sounds similar to the artist, it just adds to her unbelievable ability......and at 9 years old, mind you !

This is one of my least favorite cover songs of Angelina Jordan, but, she sings it as well as it can be sung. I just don’t care for the style or particular sound of this song. There are clearly elements in the orchestral arrangement unique to this performance. How much of those are her ideas or the conductor or someone else we don't know, but from knowing her, it's entirely possible she requested them.

She was 10 years old here. Her mother objected to the lyrics, so on the way to the taping, she changed the words. That’s why she was looking at the music. This is one of my very favorite performances of Angelina’s. She produced so many wonderful performances at this age. Love them all (all that I’ve seen so far, that is)!

Ceci, I got a question. Do singers like Angelina plan out just exactly how they are going to sing all those vocal tricks or do they just come out naturally as they sing? I can't get how these little little details could be made up on the spot and if they are planned I can't get how they can be remembered.
A little bit of both. You can plan out what you wanna do, and you may remember some of it, but for the most part you’ll be filling out the rest with improvisation.

Something I always like about this one... on the surface, the original song is a pretty 'dry' song. There is not a lot of dynamics in the melody. It seems to take forever to get to the chorus (like there's an extra verse in there or something). And even with all that, Angelina is able to add so much little subtle details that it gives it a new life. There are certain things she does here that you have to listen very closely to hear... but when you hear them it is pure beauty.
Ceci, AJ maintains vocal fry through her vibrato, from her chest voice to her head voice, all the way through her runs. And when she moves from an open vowel to a consonant at the end of a riff -- the way she handles the word "moon" is a good example -- she effortlessly handles the transition from fry on the vowel to closed ("hummed") vibrato on the consonant with such skill that it's just perfection. I think this is one reason why so many listeners compare her to Amy, who had the same remarkable ability.
You can change the lyrics to make them age appropriate but you can't change the sensuality of this masterpiece by Amy. She was a genius and a great loss. It's amazing that this little girl could sing this song with so much understanding at such a young age. A true gift.

As you have noticed and noted #AngelinaJordan absolutely loves singing. And although this is a rehearsal it shows just how much musicians love to play with and for her. Her unassuming and graceful personality is much more attractive than those of self-absorbed divas that have temperamental attitudes. Because Angelina is a Divine Gift others in the art form are pleased with her craft. And those of us that review her music videos are compelled to become followers.

Hi Ceci, have you come across Angelina's rehearsal for 'A Portrait Of A Child (Man)' with English subtitles? Angelina changes it from 'A Man' to a 'A Child' but it gives you a lovely understanding of her professionalism at nine. If you have not then it would be a great reaction for you.
Again, Ceci came through for us. This was indeed an exceptional performance. Adult orchestra members don’t make Angie anxious nor do they intimidate her. She assumes the leadership position that comes with the job and has worked with so many musicians that she knows what works for her and for a collaborative process. I think that I have seen so many vids of her that I can honestly agree with her that she gets excited, not anxious/nervous. Even she had “normal” skills that would be great, but her talent and skills are exceptional. Hence the whole child prodigy thing. I love watching and hearing you Ceci. I learn a lot.

This is one of my least favorite cover songs of Angelina Jordan, but, she sings it as well as it can be sung. I just don’t care for the style or particular sound of this song. I never cared for this particular Amy Winehouse song anyway.

There are clearly elements in the orchestral arrangement unique to this performance. How much of those are her ideas or the conductor or someone else we don't know, but from knowing her, it's entirely possible she requested them.

She was 10 years old here. Her mother objected to the lyrics, so on the way to the taping, she changed the words. That’s why she was looking at the music. This is one of my very favorite performances of Angelina’s. She produced so many wonderful performances at this age. Love them all (all that I’ve seen so far, that is)!

Ceci, I got a question. Do singers like Angelina plan out just exactly how they are going to sing all those vocal tricks or do they just come out naturally as they sing? I can't get how these little little details could be made up on the spot and if they are planned I can't get how they can be remembered.
A little bit of both. You can plan out what you wanna do, and you may remember some of it, but for the most part you’ll be filling out the rest with improvisation.
