10 years back India used to import all electronic components & toys from China. We were heavily dependent on substandard China maal. This was one of the reasons i voted for BJP. Now India is exporting these.
which electronics items India are exporting. The trade deficit between India and China has only grown over the years. It is a good start that atleast we are able to export toys from our country. But we are still lagging far far behind China in the production of high end value added products like electronic items. We are growing but our growth is too slow for a country with so much potential for faster growth.
I noticed this success in Bhopal at very 1st time while visited a top shop.. All Made In India... The Quality are just unbeatable as well for national intake and International Export.. Amazing to see electronic and chip based tops too which is even matching the new trends too... We need to elevate and promote the safest tops that are our basic traditional toys too. Making low end chips and motors for toys are easily doable. India already has an established electric motors industry and low end chips. Manufacturers need to invest in setting up such plants in India to produce cheaply and in volumes. Hopefully we will see a lot of startups in this space soon.
As already pointed out, for electronic toys, the critical components are sourced from China and basically the final assembly is done in India. This is pretty much the same story for smartphones that say "Made in India", which is why many big brand's phone prices have not come down by much despite being made in India :/ Also, the Indian company owners need to do their part in spending more to hire talented artists and engineers who can come up with our own creations. How much do these people spend on R&D? They seem to only make simple designs since it's easy to imitate or manufacture. Like the stuffed toys shown or the kids's building block. We can't wait for Lego or Mattel to improve the talent pool. Talented artists exist in India already. There are cosplayers in India who make custom parts using 3D printers. The Indian talent with ideas are already there in the country.
If we have to compete in a global space then we have to lower are import duties. I hope that this does not became a norm where import duties on toys always remains so high

We are now one step ahead from China's dump yard and need to keep watch on the proxies to get back this dump again in different ways. This is Great India's Toy Story as come back and need to go further and further. This must be treated as important as other industries. We have some obstacles still there like for chip and circuits dependencies (Hope that will go soon with Indian Semiconductor industries), Batteries (This need more innovation in India). However the problematic part is, There is ignorance too while we are making money without efforts/investments, For example, Eye Glasses Frames (this is crazy to see that almost all major Indian brands are using made in China frames, WHY? What is rocket science behind this, this is just ignorance to make profit without efforts and self-reliance. We can do much better and even do collaborations with major product brands to get into this.
