- Its time to get the Harley Davidson Pan America off road and into some dirt tracks!
Lets see how this bike performs after stepping off the KTM 1290 Adventure R.
I rode the bike on the trails at QMP Queensland Moto Park In South East Qld only 30km form my home in Beaudesert.
The bike performed well, and I'm looking forward to hitting some long adventures on this bike!

I think this is the point where the word "Adventure" is different for everyone, I purchased my Multistrada Enduro, as I ride similar to you, I like the long days in the saddle to reach places I want to see, nothing too extreme, did that in my youth, when we just called it trail riding or riding in the bush, then the word "Adventure" was added and we then separated and broke things down in to categories...kinda like back in my mountain biking days, things later got broken down into categories and people had to fit into a "niche"...to me it was just cycling, all that was changed was the "instrument" that transported me to places I wanted to see and experience. Years ago, I spent 14 months on an FJR1300 travelling Australia, circumnavigating twice, north to south four times, you can't say that wasn't an "Adventure"...now I have my Multistrada and Super Tenere, just different "Instruments", I still have the desire to go trail riding, but I also have to keep in mind, I'm not getting any younger, and things don't heal as quickly as they used to.
I agree 100% on niche wording. If I drive a Commodore to Uluru does that make it an adventure car? No it's just a car!. I get annoyed with the labels, great for marketing companies, easy to sell to niche markets. We sound very familiar in attitude. To me it's just bike riding, I either ride my kx450 or now my Pan Am!
This'll hopefully silence a few of those Harley skeptics out there...seems to be a few around...looking forward to your next adventure!

Great video, there is nothing there that I wouldn’t take a 2010 Super Tenere or 2012 Crosstourer so no big real advantages there. That said, with those big bikes what you did is about as much as you want to do for several hours a day and still enjoy it. Well done in highlighting the Pan. Look forward to seeing more
Exactly the point, most riding I do is dirt roads and bitumen, but it's good to show pretty much any bike will go most places, just choose a brand and colour! I've never ridden a ST I reckon that would be a great bike

I could really do with some training by someone like you Mal, fell off the GSA yesterday here in Japan uphill rocky road "i completely stuffed up the approach" curled up rolled off and got straight back on 🤣🤣

Great Vid. Not sure I am convinced though. Give some long undulating whoops one after the other. Think you may blow through the suspension rather fast.
They are surprisingly low slug weight but I think the ground clearance is a big issue for anything other than light ADV riding.
Got a mate with one. They don’t fare well when you drop them. Radiators are susceptible to damage and the plastic screen mounts break easily too.
You a good rider and that’s obvious but in the hands on a newer rider thing it’s a big hand full of fat bike with pretty average suspension
Just my thoughts from mates who have had or have them.
I would have no hesitation riding this bike to say Cameron Corner and Haddon Corner as I did the KTM. Long whoop sections would make any adv bike struggle, but that's not my intent with this bike. I bought it for long adventure rides, throw in some dirt, some technical riding etc. I get my actual dirt bike thrills riding moto each week on my kx450, the point of the vid was to demonstrate the bike can go off road. Cheers for the comment I appreciate it! I'll set this bike up a bit more yet, I removed the steering damper, hated it, and slid the forks down 20mm to the top of the fork, it's gained a small amount of ground clearance and still steers fine, in fact it will add stability at speed, it's going to be a fun project!
Nice bike Mal! I wrote my Harley off last year and nearly myself, bought a Norden 901 and just need to get on it and practice off the bitumen, nice work 👍

Very good. I like the way you keep things practical and real world like. Would be helpful for us with less off-road experience if you mentioned whether or when you are fully disabling the TC or just using one of the selected bike off-road mode. With the PAm for example, lifting the front wheel is suppose to be better facilitated (according to the owner manual) in off-road plus mode.

Off Road Plus mode with ARH disabled
Traction Control was only turned off on the fast uphill Dusty section, otherwise was left on.

Would have no hesitation riding it to Cape York. Similar physical size to the Tiger but the motor is a lot stronger in the 1250. The PA is closer to the Tiger than the KTM.
I'm half shocked how well it went. Didn't look to different to how I'd expect a big BMW to handle. Did your bars rotate at all?😊
No the bars didn't rotate, however today I've ordered a up and back bar clamp I'll video that when installed.

Only a few kg, when I change the pipe will get them close. The HD carries its weight lower making it feel more nimble.

Awesome ride. Surprised that you think center of gravity is lower!! How do you think the engine compares to the 1290.
The HD engine is a bit lumpy off the bottom but a smoother engine on the road. The KTM was a bit friendlier at real low speed, much better clutch and shifting on the KTM. The HD is clunky, as they all are.
And yes c of g definitely lower on the HD. Makes the bike easier to ride actually.

Yep pretty much as you said however I do a custom mode and remove any ARH

Sold the kato to buy this bike! Definitely will miss the 1290 is some ways, it's a superior off road bike for sure, but the Harley will get me where I want to go as well. Cheers!

Hey mate great channel. Just finished watching your trip to the cape with the misses. Looked like a great ride. I'm seriously considering trading my HD Roadking Special in on a Pan Am. The only thing Im worried about is will this be a backwards step re comfort for my pillion / wife? 99% of my road trips have the bride on the back. You know what they say - happy wife happy life.. What are your thoughts??
Cheers mate for the support! I'm shooting a vid next week with wifey on the back, she likes it but I usually throw a small toolbag or bag so she has something behind her. When we travel it will be fine because she will have luggage behind her to lean into. There is a company making a rear back rest for the Pan Am that might work! Yes wifey enjoys being on the back. If we go for a day ride I put a tool bag on the rear rack for a bit of a backrest/security. On a trip we use a softbag. Check the video WARTS N ALL on this channel we do a 2 up ride out west.
what tires are you running?Also how are they on streets and or highway
I'm running Continental tkc80 at the moment great on the streets. I will upload a tyre review this week. Next tyre I'm going to try will be the Dunlop Trailmax Raid I hear good things about them.
Not sure I see the desire or need to take a 550 pound motorcycle off road. Like driving a school bus on a go cart track. Wrong vehicle wrong place. And I own a 2023 PAS. * I read your response to another similar question. Just because the bike can do something doesn’t mean it’s the best tool for the job 👍🏼
Fair enough but perhaps you missed my point. I coach adventure bike riders, I also go on epic adventure bike rides, the idea is if I get in a difficult spot the bike is capable of being ridden out, and generally people want to know, how off road capable is the PA. If you view my channel you will see I ride motocross and used to race off road, so yep I know what bike for what purpose.
I personally like to mix my adventure rides with bitumen, dirt and occasionally some light off road, and I now know this bike can get me where I want to go. As mentioned Im actually quite a boring adventure bike rider, but here in Australia, some of the most epic rides include a bit of harder more technical off road, Im not going to ride a lightweight adventure bike 5000km to tackle 100m of tougher terrain, but, I will ride the PA 5000km, knowing if I find 100m or 100 yards of tougher terrain I can ride the bike through it, hope that helps, so as you state wrong vehicle wrong place, agree, but sometimes I might just end up in the wrong place on the wrong vehicle and need to know the limitations of the bike, afterall it is designed as an adventure bike. You're absolutely right. In the US you could ride 1600km to get the BDR or trails you want. I'm not riding a small bike that far just to do 70km of off-road. It's the trade off that's made.

Go watch my my Can I Kill the Harley for exactly what you describe, however I do drag the bike and pick it up.
I'm a few months short of my 64th birthday, and I pick my 1290 KTM up whenever the occasion arises. If you have descent strength it's very doable. You don't have to bench press it,just get it on it's wheels. Good technique goes a long way.
