I had learned about this bridge back in my middle school engineering class. Now, as a truck driver, whenever I go from WV to Ohio, my route always takes me through Point Pleasant and past the Silver Bridge memorial.
The one thing they didn't mention is the weak link which was the one inch bolt that held the links together. It could have been up to a 6 inch bolt but they decided on One inch. When the one link broke the one inch nut popped off so that the entire connection came apart. If it had been secured with a 6 inch or even welded it would have stayed together till it could be repaired. So basically that entire bridge was held together with a one inch bolt. If someone came along with a one inch wrench and unscrewed that nut the entire bridge would have collapsed. Why didn't anyone see that?
You are aware that it was the city who commissioned the bridge and probably stipulated the price right? Nothing to do with greed but Rather to do with Penny Pichings
My Aunt Hilda, along with her children Cathy and Kim perished in this disaster. They were on they was to pick up my grandmother to go Christmas shopping. They never found Cathy.
We had family and friends on the bridge also. There were so many Xmas packages and stuff in the water. The water was so murky and dark, it was hard to find people.
The strange thing about this is this tragedy happened 13 months after the last sighting of mothman in the area And the cherry on the cake told you what it is? Esbon number 13 is the one that failed,The mothman was also seen days before the 2011 Japanese earthquake in the vicinity of the Fukushima nuclear plant flying over it and sat down to rest on the reactor that exploded after sitting on it. they looked at him 6 meters close to him After giving them the scare of their lives, the mothman passed over them, losing himself in the immensity of the dark sky.The last that is known about him is that he is being seen around O'Hare International Airport.
George Washington also warned folks not to disturb the Indigenous cultures burial grounds on at point pleasant. Hello from New Haven, WV. About 18 miles N. of Mothman territory..
I love engineers, after a engineering disaster, they say it wouldn't have happened if they built it, but then, they take the same courses that the failed engineers did.
For the most part it comes down to management and their greed on pinching each penny to cut budget and meet schedule. There are many stories in the past to where management even pressures the lead engineers to sign off of things while the engineers know that it may not be okay. Space shuttle Challenger is a great example of this regarding the O-ring issues with cold temps on day of launch, in school they literally have all engineers now take courses in ethics of engineering where they teach you to speak up or stand for yourself if you know something engineering related is not okay but upper management or anyone else is trying to cut corners for profit.
When this bridge was built, cars were not that common, so bridge traffic was minor. Now, nearly 40 years later, cars were very common and the bridge design became obsolete because it could not hand the traffic or the weather in West Virginia anymore. What actually needed to happen was build more redundancy into this bridge once traffic became heavier.
@@easyenetwork2023 which doing so costs a LOT of money money that Point pleasant possibly didn't have it would have been Better to build another bridge to modern specs yet trying to keep it cheap as possible (Looking at it from city planers perspective)
No such inspection required in those days, and the bridge was built of a new harder metal that was touted as being so strong it didn't need redundancy. In fact, it was this bridge failure that caused President Johnson to push a bill to require bridge inspections every two years.
Well this so true an I'm gone be honest I seen this mothman thing I was on 95 on the highway in Richmond VA where I'm from an this fly it was flying pass the car one day an I seen it long enough to know that this video absolutely true an this thing is still alive I can not make this up I swear.
It was so big about 9 feet with wings big I've never seen anything like this in my life only one time if someone else seen it any where please speak up I don't want anyone think I'm crazy

There was no curse, it was all human greed that causes these disasters. Cheap bridge collapses, predictable.
Probably a curse
oh please, we all know it was Mothman
A few have occurred.
One was in 2007.
You are aware that it was the city who commissioned the bridge and probably stipulated the price right? Nothing to do with greed but Rather to do with Penny Pichings

@Crystal Glass-I’m so sorry. May they RIP.

2 person will never found
Sorry
Oh My Gosh. How terrible🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mothman didn’t cause the bridge to fall, he was an omen. He was warning that a disaster would come. Don’t make fun of him lol
Hahahahaahhahaha

You fr think so ?
No
Its always been here and it's still here now.
And there's more than one.

as a structural engineering student, im very positively surprised of this video
How so?
You think it's Mothman too?
At the lowest bidder mindset, bottom line mentality that still resonates throughout the world?

The model bridge is incredible!!!
"Dramatically reduced the redundancy" = zero redundancy.

Seems like the wpa structures built during the depression turned out to be more durable than expected.

The Silver Bridge opened in 1928, it collapsed in 1967. The description is incorrect lol

Things like settlement of supports due to poor foundation/soil conditions can actually lead to high stresses being developed in redundant structures.

National Geographic 🍂🍂🍂🇮🇳
It has been four months since I last watched NatGeo's videos... I missed it.
I live in West Virginia and it is almost Heaven!!
Back then what also effected this was the lack of knowledge in aerodynamics we know of today.
Remember the forgotten National Geographic explore vr that is abandoned? I wish it made more maps :c
What? I got a VR set. Send me the link.
Can you guys please explain why you censored the mothman statue's crotch in the episode? There's nothing there to censor
Redundancy does not equal safety
No, but it does equal safer.
All age people love to watch NatGeo
Amazing
Science, the ultimate
I thought it was the Mothman?
There's no such thing. lol I lived in Pt. Pleasant. The town was dying and needed revenue and it was the "LSD" era and the rumours began.
Cutting costs don't usually end well.. If not now, later. 🙁
Enjoy

Sounds like someone in the state government was paid to look the other way, when it was built ?
In the late 1920’s.
An engineer would have spotted the single points of failure any thrown out the design. NG shows what was wrong and uncovers the low bid coverup.

Jadi ingin jalan jalan.... Sayang cirina menghadang...
Interesting theory about the lack of redundancy, but it was clearly the flying cryptid and curse of the Indian gravesite what caused the collapse.
Collapse is faster than my data speed
It wasn’t the Mothman it was building a bridge using blue plastic I beams.
