"Give me my five dollars. If you get shot tonight, I'll disappear. Oh, I'll come back and bury you... and mumble something Christian over your grave."
    "Lightfoot, your kindness overwhelms me."
Fun Fact: George Kennedy's mustache was a stick-on one.
Location Location Fact: The opening scene was filmed entirely on a fragmentary set, augmented by matte paintings, on a Warner Bros. sound stage.
The Fall Guy Fact: Most of the scenes showing John Wayne riding from a distance were filmed with stuntman Chuck Roberson substituting for Wayne. Roberson also appears briefly as the leader of the posse.
Casting Notes Fact: Ten-year-old Clay O'Brien, was already a champion rodeo cowboy when he starred here as John Wayne's youngest son Billy Joe. He had previously appeared with Wayne in The Cowboys (1972). He had a very busy five year film career with 16 credits, mostly westerns which took advantage of his many cowboy skills. He left acting completely about age 15 to focus on his rodeo career. He was elected to that sport's Hall of Fame.
The Duke Fact: John Wayne was sixty-five years old at the time the movie was filmed. He had had a cancerous lung removed in 1964, and was suffering from emphysema in his remaining lung. Wayne was so weakened that he had to use a stepladder to climb onto his horse in the film. In addition to his own declining health, news that his friend and mentor, John Ford, was dying of cancer forced the actor to consider his own mortality. After Ford's death in August, 1973, Wayne told reporters: "I'm pretty much living on borrowed time."

Some interesting trivia again. Must be so tough knowing you are not long for this world. Still, another great showing from The Duke

I actually like his westerns more from true grit up into the 70s because obviously with the influence of the wild bunch 1969 film in general got more volient and realistic especially in the western with the blood squibs etc which is something wayne didn't like he thought it was unnecessary, Anyway with that said still waiting patiently for your reaction to my favourite of his westerns and films in general Big jake. 😁

Yes Sir you are correct. Around 1970 give or take westerns started getting Alot darker industry wide. The DUKE was always a big box office draw. He didn't like it much but in order to get financing to make a western he had no choice. He had his own production company BATJAC he personally financed A movie that he wanted and tried to make for years. THE ALAMO which I liked but didn't do very well at the box office. And he lost almost all his money.

The Alamo is of course on my list of Westerns of The Duke too 👍

This is another favorite of mine. George Kennedy plays a great villain. He scared me to death as a kid when I first saw at the Drive-In. GOD BLESS ALL HERE!!!!

Even as an adult I found Kennedy quite intimidating in this film. Can see how it had a profound effect t on you as a child.

One of my favorite of the "mature" John Wayne westerns. When you get a chance, you definitely need to check out McQ 1974 and Brannigan 1975.

This is a great movie I love. Wayne was definitely the man of the day, many of us loved the way way he was a handsome man without being" pretty" during this era , the age of the rugged guys was starting to give way to a different type of star, Wayne was always his own man. I also agree with those saying Kennedy was absolutely the best villain 😊. Thank you as always.
