1939 was the greatest year in the history of cinema. Stagecoach, Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz all came out that year and would have a defining influence on filmmakers for generations to come. I’d argue this movie is the most important of the 3 due to Ford and Wayne’s influence.

Other of my personal favorites (maybe not as influential) from that year: "Beau Geste," "Gunga Din," "In Name Only," "Drums Along the Mohawk," "Destry Rides Again," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "The Flying Deuces," "Of Mice and Men."

This was a superb western film, directed by the great John Ford. Pathos, humour, drama, action and amazing desert landscape, all contributed to this movie deserving a motion picture iconic status. It had a very strong cast, with John Wayne, playing the laconic cowboy and anti hero, Ringo, Thomas Mitchell putting in a brilliant performance as the cigar chomping and hard drinking doctor with a heart of gold and the wonderful John Carradine, cast as the gentleman southern gambler. Andy Devine was hilarious as the stage coach driver Buck, together with George Bancroft as the tough and duty minded sheriff, Curley. Claire Trevor playing the sweet natured ‘woman of the night’ character is a perfect foil to John Wayne’s character. The haunting film score brilliantly captured the rugged beauty and danger of the inhospitable and arid landscape.

The great character actor, Thomas Mitchell, as the bibulous doctor, was a regular scene stealer. Here he plays a loveable wayward rogue, but a courageous social outsider, willing to put his life at risk when the need arises. Also, special mention should be made of the highly talented actor, John Carradine, perfectly cast as the enigmatic southern gentleman gambler.
