  • Amid scrutiny for the handling of their performing elephants, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced in March of this year that they will be removing elephants from their shows by 2018. The retired elephants will be brought to the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation in Polk City, Florida. To help ensure the conservation of the Asian elephant, the animals will continue to be bred and studied at the center, with assisted reproduction and research into the diseases that plague them. Here, Ringling Bros. staff were given the opportunity to talk about the work being done to save the Asian elephant.

    "They don't have to walk 30 or 40 miles a day for food and water" Dude they literally are used to doing that in the wild, it's in their nature. The only thing I'll agree with is that he is right that they're safe from poachers.

      +Dar70 no but he said that they do it in the wild, that it was natural for them. Nothing that they train these elephants to do in a circus is natural it is so far from natural that is why they eventually snap. It's just disgusting. I suppose they don't beat them either. Disgusting and you trying to justify it to me shows me who you are. No one I would want to talk to.

      I watched a video of a REAl sanctuary (PAWS IN CALIFORNIA) and they give them treat balls like a kong for dogs and play games(training) to keep their minds busy. they do not use bullhooks but do use food and chutes to move them around..these guys are trained with the bullhook so it is probably the easy and safest way to move them. paws does have a very large area for the African elephants but the Asia elephants have a much smaller area and the Q elephants even smaller ( Q elephants are ones that have been exposed to turburkicois) that being said i dont know if they are in the best place but what they are doing is similar to some other sanctuarys . also a great place near nashville tenn that takes in female elephants only and puts them in a normal as possible enverment..they all have barns and stalls for them. the wild is the best place for them but thats not possible and if they are being took care of right at least they dont have to run for their lives on the daliy from poachers and watch their newborns die a gross death being eaten alive by a lion or corc

    "Elephants do stand on their heads". LOL Gee I wonder if that's because those elephants have been forced to since they were babies? And they're so proud to say they have the largest 'herd' of Asian elephants and yet you always see the elephants one or two in a fenced pen. Elephants live in family groups. They're extremely social. And here, in this so called sanctuary, they're forced to live apart. Anyone interested in seeing a true sanctuary, check out Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

      Gavin, there is no way to 'correctly' use an instrument meant to hurt the elephant to force it to obey you. A better question is what makes a circus think they have to right to hold wild animals in captivity and 'train' them to perform unnatural acts for our amusement by using pain?

    • @michaelanace628
      @michaelanace628 6 років тому +6

      Gavin Cleckler The bull hooks are not used in a gentle or comfortable way. They're jabbed with the pointy end in the areas most sensitive to make them move away, and pulled from behind the ear with the hook end to come closer. The animals are more easily controlled through fear so when performing the handler need only let the elephant see or merely be touched by the bull hook to make it cooperate. There's more than enough footage and testimony out there about it

      @thomasfaltejsek 6 років тому +3

      Actually, having seen wild elephants, in the wild, I would agree with the person in the video. They are constantly playing around with stuff in very silly ways, just for the halibut. They're inquisitive, so they fiddle with things. When they are young, they just do outrageous things with anything they can find. They also appear to like people. In the wild, they recognize individual people as poachers or as carrying weapons and leave the area. They recognize who leaves food out for them and speaks well to them, and they have been known to assign one elephant make a big fuss in one area to draw people away from guarding crops or fruit and then have the rest of the group sneak in and raid the field. That is why they are doomed in the wild, precisely because they are clever like that and damage crops. That is a fact - they are doomed in the wild. The only hope for their survival is to keep some animals safe and pray for a day when they will be able to be in the wild again. As for the size of the facility, they have far, far more land in this facility than they do in most rescues and sanctuaries. This facility is far more natural and healthy than others I've seen. It's much better chosen ground, far more suitable land types, as well as far better maintained. Look at the grass. Then look at most sanctuaries. They are on bare dirt in far, far smaller pens. You may hate this group but this facility is far better laid out and the animals are in far, far better condition than any other rescue I've ever seen. Anywhere. You wouldn't know if an animal had insufficient muscle mass or fat or was dehydrated or had poor foot care - I would know. These animals are in far better condition than others in other facilities.

    I’ve watched and read so much on elephants. With that said, what in “know” about elephants is probably about 1/10th of 1%. After watching this video, I was struck by either what little they know about an elephant’s needs and wants, their socialization (which is so huge in determining an elephant’s place within the group, as well as affecting their odds for survival), or how they chose to present their case and to defend their actions as what’s best for these animals.
    Case in point: the group states how it will benefit the elephants, especially with eliminating the need to walk 40 to 50 miles each day for food and water. Now, everything I’ve read, and watched in documentary format, specifically stated that elephants are essentially designed, and have evolved, to a state of being where ideally they will walk 50 miles (approximately speaking) each day for their food/water survival needs.
    Nice try, guys.

    Ringling Bros. should've declined the request from National Geographic. This video just makes matters worse. It's a montage of interviews w/the staff justifying why they do the BS that they do. There are actual elephant sanctuaries where the elephants have little to no contact w/humans OR human interaction is not forced or prodded w/tools. This looks nothing like that. Why is it so important that ASIAN elephants not go extinct in America? How about we travel to Asia to see them in their natural habitat. I appreciate that Ringling Bros. is taking a step in this direction, but they still have a long way to go.

      Pictures are good and what we SHOULD have. Unless we can introduce elephants into the wild then there is no reason to continue to cause them such pain. An elephant in a zoo teaches a child NOTHING...just like a human in a prison. There is no difference. Elephants will go extinct because humans caused their extinction. This is what we do.

    • @noneofyourbeeswax01

      African Elephants are far more endangered (especially the Forest Elephant) but the significant difference is that circuses/zoos/parks don't generally use African Elephants, only Asian elephants. In this light, the motive behin RB's insistence that the Asian species must be "protected" can be seen for the self-serving BS that it is.

Compare to wild elephants that never have ragged ears and scarred skin along their heads and trucks. Leave wild elephants in the wild. They shouldn't be removed from their homes to make money for companies like Ringling Bros. Common sense and decency, please.

Key words we are unable to import these animals since 1976, so you are going to artificially inseminate them instead keep the gravy train running make it look the animals are happy enough to breed but they are not doing it naturally its more or less animal rape for profit. Have to diversify into conservation as thats trendy now as people have the internet now and can see how badly we treated our circus elephants before, crap we better do something so an elephant farm for people to see what asian elephants look like in years to come is how we are going to sell this new venture. What a load of stomach turning crap, not buying it for a second. Just as bad as seaworld breeding artificially to keep the show albeit in a different form going.

    I don't like what these circuses did in the past, but I commend them for retiring these animals. It is a great step forward.

    • @ronaldtartaglia4459

      Ronald Tartaglia breeding them only to be viewable in the future is like approaching a disease and solely addressing the symptom. The bigger problem needs to be addressed. Poaching and loss of habitat.
      These are themselves linked to bigger problems like poverty, poor education, encroaching urbanisation and destruction of natural forests.
      Now, I am not saying these circuses must fix ALL these problems, but their goal should be to have the animals in the wild. In this way it would also help galvanize the world into action by seeing what should be our collective goal. Soley breeding them for viewing seems more like giving up on the bigger problem to me. We should not keep these animals in breeding farms forever.

If you truly cared about the well-being of his animals he would bring them back to the countries out there from where they were already well established reserves for them to live on.
