As you noted, William himself was half Stuart, as his mother was Mary, the Princess Royal and daughter of Charles I. William was therefore Charles I's grandson in the female line. They were all related, one way or another, but James II was actually Charles I's son (not grandson), making him William's uncle. Then, the marriage of William to the future Queen Mary II (James' daughter), made William of Orange both the nephew and son-in-law of James II. It's Mary II and William III who actually were first cousins.

I think you are doing a good job focusing on British history. They were our enemy but they evolved into one of our greatest allies during ww2,ww1, Cold War etc. Also during the Middle Eastern conflicts they played a crucial part in helping the United States. Gotta love our neighbor across the sea.
They were also the parent of the United States, the Founding Fathers identified largely as Englishmen (if they hadn’t there wouldn’t have been a war, as they would not have perceived their rights as Englishmen to have been infringed) and even the Patriot ideology had a lot of its heritage in British culture, philosophy and politics. The government of the day was the enemy, just as there is more to American culture, philosophy and politics than whoever is sat in the White House at the time, the same applies to Britain. There was notable sympathy for the colonists’ arguments (certainly before the war started, but even after - MP Charles Fox used to turn up to Parliament in Contiental buff and blue ‘uniform’) in Parliament and Britain as a whole.
People say thay American history began in 1776 or at the beginning of English settlement in North America but I've always considered English history before 1776 as an extension of American history because the struggles between king and nobility and later king and Parliament is fundamentally important in understanding the American character.
Looking at America as a brit feels like looking at your child that has become extremely successful. We had the biggest empire that this world has ever seen, and the us, while not being an empire in the same fashion, has become it's own great power.
@The History From my experience, yes. I received a very white washed, nationalistic view of what history I did take. Most of my “history” classes were called Social Studies and mostly included 18th century onward and only the part America could be seen(read *twisted*) as America being the hero.
@The History Yes, we do have history classes. But, unfortunately, what constitutes history is vastly distorted to promote the white, evangelical and wealthy people of the past. I’m not saying that no where in America teaches the unbiased truth, this country is far too large to monopolize any thing. However, being taught that our country has this best and an undefeated military is only one of many issue we face in the American educational system. Also, I’m speaking from the public education system (ages 5-18). If you are speaking about college/university experience, then yes, there are absolutely great history classes and professors at that level. What bothers me is that our primary education doesn’t focus enough on things like the nuances of history. I personally had never heard of the Treaty of Versailles and it’s direct impact on WW2 until I found this channel. We are taught to memorize for tests. So just know these certain dates and these certain people who are apart of this certain event and repeat them on the test. Thankfully there are people pushing for a better system of judging children’s education progress, but these thing take time.

History Matters has stopped making these 10 minute videos and is now making really interesting videos around history questions, which you never really hear about, but you might have wondered about. they are a bit short to react to, but if you do them like the last one i feel like that would be fine. maybe combine 2 or so with questions that are relevant to each other or belong to the same theme. personally i like the new shorter videos more from history matters and hope, that you would focus on them more, than the old 10 minute videos. they are fine from a history standpoint, but i just feel like they are trying to cover a whole period and do that very lightly. you could find that stuff everywhere, although history matters manages to deliver that information in an interesting way, i feel like they arent as unique as their newer shorter videos.
Yeah he usually covers extremely interesting historical questions that nobody ever really dwells on, like 'why did Brazil join WW2?' The best part is that you haven't got to commit 2 hours of your time to some long winded documentary - he will sum up the reasons why in less than 5 minutes. It really is like the kind of thing you'd use in University

(And while yes, I know that history is supposed to be taught this way, unfortunately, not every channel covering history does this.)

At the time of all this, there was also a knight known as Sir Humphery Lee, and from him came Richard Henry Lee, Francis Lightfoot Lee, two of the founding fathers, and also General Robert E Lee, with modern times the late actor Christopher Lee and myself are all directly from Sir Humphery Lee who was a Knight of the English court.

Two examples. Brits pronounce MILITARY with 3 syllables: MIL-uh-tree. In my country we say all 4 syllables: MIL-ih-teh-ree. In England an extra syllable is given to ALUMINUM, and don't say you spell it differently because you don't! So, the English say al-yu-MIN-ee-um. We correctly pronounce it: uh-LOO-mih-num. There are many other examples.

Canada has a shameful history of residential schools which we have now begun to observe as a new national holiday September 30, called National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. I grew up in New Jersey and was taught that there was no malice in the way Indian schools were run, I have my doubts based on what has been discovered here. The bit the video misses is that the reign is usually called that of "William (III) and Mary (II)" because, very unusually they were equal monarchs sharing the throne. William's wife Mary was vital to the whole takeover, because essentially as she was the daughter of the king they'd just pushed off the throne (James II) she therefore gave the move legitimacy and continuity. Also, it didn't mention that not only did James II convert to Catholicism, but he also started to attempt to rule by decree (so, very much in the style of his father Charles I) and so people felt that if he stayed on the throne then the whole civil war thing between king and parliament would just erupt and create death and destruction once again.

Just recently found your channel and Ive been loving it. Been running through your playlists over the last week and been really enjoying it overall. Wanted to ask since i know you also have a gaming channel; have you checked out the Wasteland games? They're not history but they use alternate US history in an interesting way to sculpt its universe. Wasteland 3 is really good and works pretty well standalone. I think you'd get a few laughs out of the game world and would probably appreciate the historical references both in the story and its music. In particular; the game uses a very interesting cover of the Battle Hymn of the Republic as one of its main songs. Keep on being awesome!

Given your self proclaimed status as an Anglophile you might want to look at his history of England videos, whilst he sadly never finished them due to youtubes mistreatment of history channels forcing him to move to quicker to produce, shorter videos, he still goes all the way from the Roman conquest through to the Civil War. Could be a fun thing to work through between other videos.
Philip II (or Felipe in spanish) was a habsburg monarch too so it would have most likely resulted in a spain-austria-england alliance which was the absolute worst nightmare for france
Phillip II was already actively interfering in France by backing the Catholic League forces in the Wars of Religion. By this point, the Habsburgs in Spain/Spanish Netherlands/Naples & Sicily/Portugal, etc. (the Spanish Empire) were a separate branch from the Austrian/Holy Roman Empire Habsburgs. But you are right in that they were connected through frequent marriages and their strong pro-Catholic affiliation, making them persistent allies for another century. Maintenance of Great Britain as a protestant state helped the Netherlands secure its independence and set the stage for the Thirty Years War in the next century.

I want to recommend a book called 'the anarchy' if you're interested in the British East India company. It's about the period from founding American colonies, one boat trading poorly and nearly sinking, all the way to the take over of Bengal and Mysore wars with Afghans and Mithras. Until the British crown takes over the BEIC after the rebellion of mid 1800s.
The one detail about Henry VIII that gets kind of overshadowed is that his squabble was with the pope and not the Catholic Church per se. This made the Church of England a kind of weird mix of Protestantism and Catholicism. In the end, it was still all about politics for Henry VIII.
Britain’s money also came from the fact that they had a much more advanced financial system than France. Basically, Britain was much better with debt and could take on much more of it than France could

It was a scandal about Prime Minister MacKenzie Bowell's stance against giving First Natios children a European style education that caused his entire family to emigrate to the US. When my great grandfather's uncle was head of the Canadian (New Town) Liberal party, my great grandfather married into the ultra-liberal Ross family and his brother married Bowell's daughter. Bowell was head of the Conservative party and Grandmaster of the Order of the Orange. My great grandmother remarried a Quincy, Illinois man after having been widowed for 17 years, and my grandmother married a Unitarian minister in 1901 who shared a building with the Baptists she was a parishioner of. My grandfather Samuel took the ministry there to be closer to his (Baverian) parents in St. Louis. Then they decided to move east.
Interestingly, Canada's project of shipping native children to schools became known as the Residential Schools and is seen as Canada's Original Sin, which is something the Canadian Government is still apologizing for today and is a big political and societal issue much like racism is in the USA due to slavery, which is a real shame because Canada has done a lot worse than the residential schools in the past, but those issues are never talked about due to being overshadowed by residential schools.

I’d highly recommend you look into the residential schools, which were the schools set up for the native Americans. Especially the ones in Canada, it’ll show how horribly they were treated most notably by the Catholic Church, which they still haven’t claimed responsibility for.

It would not have been in his interests to support her replacing Queen Elizabeth on the throne if Catholic France, rather than Catholic Spain had been the main beneficiary. Going back to Henry VIII's marriage to Katherine of Aragon the mother of England's Queen Mary (half sister of Queen Elizabeth) that surely was a ploy to gang up with Spain against France.

Canada has a shameful history of residential schools which we have now begun to observe as a new national holiday September 30, called National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. I grew up in New Jersey and was taught that there was no malice in the way Indian schools were run, I have my doubts based on what has been discovered here.

The bit the video misses is that the reign is usually called that of "William (III) and Mary (II)" because, very unusually they were equal monarchs sharing the throne. William's wife Mary was vital to the whole takeover, because essentially as she was the daughter of the king they'd just pushed off the throne (James II) she therefore gave the move legitimacy and continuity. Also, it didn't mention that not only did James II convert to Catholicism, but he also started to attempt to rule by decree (so, very much in the style of his father Charles I) and so people felt that if he stayed on the throne then the whole civil war thing between king and parliament would just erupt and create death and destruction once again.
That's funny watching this video and you discuss annexions of Wales, royal marriage with Spain, etc. I just finished watching your Crusader Kings III series on your other channel and this looks so familiar 😆

Wanted to ask since i know you also have a gaming channel; have you checked out the Wasteland games? They're not history but they use alternate US history in an interesting way to sculpt its universe. Wasteland 3 is really good and works pretty well standalone. I think you'd get a few laughs out of the game world and would probably appreciate the historical references both in the story and its music. In particular; the game uses a very interesting cover of the Battle Hymn of the Republic as one of its main songs.

Given your self proclaimed status as an Anglophile you might want to look at his history of England videos, whilst he sadly never finished them due to youtubes mistreatment of history channels forcing him to move to quicker to produce, shorter videos, he still goes all the way from the Roman conquest through to the Civil War. Could be a fun thing to work through between other videos.

Philip II (or Felipe in spanish) was a habsburg monarch too so it would have most likely resulted in a spain-austria-england alliance which was the absolute worst nightmare for france
Phillip II was already actively interfering in France by backing the Catholic League forces in the Wars of Religion. By this point, the Habsburgs in Spain/Spanish Netherlands/Naples & Sicily/Portugal, etc. (the Spanish Empire) were a separate branch from the Austrian/Holy Roman Empire Habsburgs. But you are right in that they were connected through frequent marriages and their strong pro-Catholic affiliation, making them persistent allies for another century. Maintenance of Great Britain as a protestant state helped the Netherlands secure its independence and set the stage for the Thirty Years War in the next century.

I want to recommend a book called 'the anarchy' if you're interested in the British East India company. It's about the period from founding American colonies, one boat trading poorly and nearly sinking, all the way to the take over of Bengal and Mysore wars with Afghans and Mithras. Until the British crown takes over the BEIC after the rebellion of mid 1800s.
The one detail about Henry VIII that gets kind of overshadowed is that his squabble was with the pope and not the Catholic Church per se. This made the Church of England a kind of weird mix of Protestantism and Catholicism. In the end, it was still all about politics for Henry VIII.

It was a scandal about Prime Minister MacKenzie Bowell's stance against giving First Natios children a European style education that caused his entire family to emigrate to the US. When my great grandfather's uncle was head of the Canadian (New Town) Liberal party, my great grandfather married into the ultra-liberal Ross family and his brother married Bowell's daughter. Bowell was head of the Conservative party and Grandmaster of the Order of the Orange. My great grandmother remarried a Quincy, Illinois man after having been widowed for 17 years, and my grandmother married a Unitarian minister in 1901 who shared a building with the Baptists she was a parishioner of. My grandfather Samuel took the ministry there to be closer to his (Baverian) parents in St. Louis. Then they decided to move east.

Interestingly, Canada's project of shipping native children to schools became known as the Residential Schools and is seen as Canada's Original Sin, which is something the Canadian Government is still apologizing for today and is a big political and societal issue much like racism is in the USA due to slavery, which is a real shame because Canada has done a lot worse than the residential schools in the past, but those issues are never talked about due to being overshadowed by residential schools.

I’d highly recommend you look into the residential schools, which were the schools set up for the native Americans. Especially the ones in Canada, it’ll show how horribly they were treated most notably by the Catholic Church, which they still haven’t claimed responsibility for.
Also they’re just finding now the bodies of all the kids killed in those schools, big issue in Canada at the moment
