"To make a difference in the life of a child ... I made the commitment to tell my personal story," says educator Lisa Godwin. In this moving talk, she shares her experience of overcoming childhood trauma with the quiet, unwavering support of a teacher and school counselor -- and shows how educators can help students and families navigate hardships by sharing their own stories.

This is so touching, especially the fact that the Teacher's daughter was there where you told the story. I love this. Teachers make a lot of impacts.

Teachers make significant impacts. When I was very young, my teacher berated me in front of the class over and over and would call me stupid, while the class laughed, all because I was too scared to open up to my personal problems. I can still hear her voice in my head, like a nightmare. :( I realized later in life I was not the stupid one, but that teacher certainly was. The only power I had is to stop my children to ever be in my position. My daughter is now a teacher, and she is an angel with her students. Students flock to her for help and advice, and they love her. There are good people in this world and there are bad.

The world needs more like Lisa Godwin. So many insights... one of them: There is a time when you can turn your pain into purpose. And Lisa does just that by helping teachers/educators become aware of students who are being abused.

A beautiful crossing guard changed my life. Her name was Cornita❤️ I came from difficult background, and I rarely interacted with happy adults. She greeted me with so much joy and happiness everyday. I couldn’t wait to see her every morning. I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me. Today, I’m working on my master’s degree in school counseling. I want to be a light in a student’s life, like she was in mine. God bless people who genuinely love our students. 💕

I have to confess. As a child growing up I was often made to feel as if I would never live up to my full potential. In all honesty, my aspirations were never overly impressive for a C grade student. I wasn't an over-achiever, too much competition involved, besides I learned that there will always be someone who is better at things than I was. My aptitudes were more hands-on than cerebral. I had to bide my time until I found my calling. I made the mistake of believing what my primary school teachers most of whom would repeatedly tell me. "Richard, you'll never make a living staring out a window." Over and over again, after a while, I just didn't hear them. Imagine my surprise when on my nineteenth birthday, while I was Hypno-driving (when you allow your sub-conscience to hijack the task of driving. Ever miss your exit on the freeway?) I realized I was behind the wheel of my eighteen-wheeler. I was imagining myself back in grade school overhearing the teacher quite clearly those words that were meant to be derogatory. It dawned on me how wrong my teachers had been. I went on to driving transit coaches accident free for another twenty-one years, followed by a role as a Driver Instructor for seven more years. Too bad, they don't have class reunions for grade schools. Thirty-eight years of staring out my windshield and never missed a paycheque. The only difference is, it's a pension cheque now and I'm driving on my own time staring out a window that wasn't supposed to hold much promise. RHP

@The Flaneur I didn't intend to diminish the value of the message in the TED Talk. Upon hearing it resonated with me because for the longest time I accepted the criticisms from these authoritative figures. I attended a school in a relatively small community. Rest assured that the reputation I had forged was transmitted to the next school years' teacher and the stigma remained all through primary school. "He won't amount to much." Thank you for your very insightful commentaries.

This is so powerful and full of love and understanding. We need more teachers like Lisa and her kindergarten teacher who was maybe the only one who saw what was going on. This is an awesome example of how it just takes one person to change a life. Teachers are in this very special place where they may be that person, who can help a life. Compassion, understanding, grace and insight are often neglected qualities of what teachers should demonstrate and practice more often. This was amazing ted talk and it touched me to see such a beautiful genuine person be so strong and honest despite the adversity and fears she had to face! Beautiful person with such a sad sad story 😥 this experience she had is just far too tragic to even imagine😞
I’m so proud of Lisa for her bravery. 🙏🏽 wish there could be more teachers like her. Through he pain she is standing up and making a difference. Bravo 👏 Lisa bravo 👏 👏

I am traumatized by my inner city middle school kids. Girls and boys slap each other and fight, take each others stuff, destroy laptops and school property, insult and threaten each other and staff. My anxiety is through the roof and the solution is always build relations and better lesson plans. I never yell (unless safety is involved) and I always ask them about their lives and interests, none of this matters. Therapy is usually done on a one to one basis but teachers are asked to be a therapist for 35k a year (plus student loans) in a room with 35+ children. The only teachers who have success are the ones that scream their heads off and that works for about 5 minutes. I was traumatized as a youngster too but I never was never doing any of the stuff I see today.

Despite of calling me in alone and telling not to listen songs like that he announce that i am used to watch pron which was matter of shame for me for that child who has jst become 13 yrs who has just reached his teenage . From that date till the ending of my school lfy i always find me below other ,i cannot raise head infront of friends .
