"To make a difference in the life of a child ... I made the commitment to tell my personal story," says educator Lisa Godwin. In this moving talk, she shares her experience of overcoming childhood trauma with the quiet, unwavering support of a teacher and school counselor -- and shows how educators can help students and families navigate hardships by sharing their own stories.

This is so touching, especially the fact that the Teacher's daughter was there where you told the story. I love this. Teachers make a lot of impacts.
You met a nice teacher.
Teachers make significant impacts. When I was very young, my teacher berated me in front of the class over and over and would call me stupid, while the class laughed, all because I was too scared to open up to my personal problems. I can still hear her voice in my head, like a nightmare. :( I realized later in life I was not the stupid one, but that teacher certainly was. The only power I had is to stop my children to ever be in my position. My daughter is now a teacher, and she is an angel with her students. Students flock to her for help and advice, and they love her. There are good people in this world and there are bad.
The world needs more like Lisa Godwin. So many insights... one of them: There is a time when you can turn your pain into purpose. And Lisa does just that by helping teachers/educators become aware of students who are being abused.
Lisa Godwin is a blessing to all her students. Her story is powerful and she truly does care about her students. She prayers for each one daily. I am glad she is my daughters teacher. She makes learning fun.
The role of the teachers not only to transfer knowledge, educate but also to give them a comfort. Thank you for all of the teachers around the world who has given their dedication
This almost made me cry, thank you wonderful woman!
Love this. Love her accent. Love her. I had a teacher a lot like hers. Thank you Mr. Garbe. I will always be grateful.
A beautiful crossing guard changed my life. Her name was Cornita❤️ I came from difficult background, and I rarely interacted with happy adults. She greeted me with so much joy and happiness everyday. I couldn’t wait to see her every morning. I wish I could tell her how much she meant to me. Today, I’m working on my master’s degree in school counseling. I want to be a light in a student’s life, like she was in mine. God bless people who genuinely love our students. 💕
I have to confess. As a child growing up I was often made to feel as if I would never live up to my full potential. In all honesty, my aspirations were never overly impressive for a C grade student. I wasn't an over-achiever, too much competition involved, besides I learned that there will always be someone who is better at things than I was. My aptitudes were more hands-on than cerebral. I had to bide my time until I found my calling. I made the mistake of believing what my primary school teachers most of whom would repeatedly tell me. "Richard, you'll never make a living staring out a window." Over and over again, after a while, I just didn't hear them. Imagine my surprise when on my nineteenth birthday, while I was Hypno-driving (when you allow your sub-conscience to hijack the task of driving. Ever miss your exit on the freeway?) I realized I was behind the wheel of my eighteen-wheeler. I was imagining myself back in grade school overhearing the teacher quite clearly those words that were meant to be derogatory. It dawned on me how wrong my teachers had been. I went on to driving transit coaches accident free for another twenty-one years, followed by a role as a Driver Instructor for seven more years. Too bad, they don't have class reunions for grade schools. Thirty-eight years of staring out my windshield and never missed a paycheque. The only difference is, it's a pension cheque now and I'm driving on my own time staring out a window that wasn't supposed to hold much promise. RHP
so true, thanks a million, worth 20 times more that this TED
I need Lisa too. I was a bad baaaad person
You showed that jerk teacher 😂, while they had to correct paper's dealing with brats all day 5 days per week years after year's. Lol, good on you!!!
I feel as though you should write them a letter tell them they are wrong you deserve that well done buddy
@The Flaneur I didn't intend to diminish the value of the message in the TED Talk. Upon hearing it resonated with me because for the longest time I accepted the criticisms from these authoritative figures. I attended a school in a relatively small community. Rest assured that the reputation I had forged was transmitted to the next school years' teacher and the stigma remained all through primary school. "He won't amount to much." Thank you for your very insightful commentaries.
There’s nothing worse than speaking up and then being told you were a liar
Unless those liars are peddled by the Left of Politics...
She is absolutely beautiful. An was able to overcome her Circumstances. People please have hope. You shouldn't have to know another man's life to give him decent common courtesy, an respect. Treat others how'd you like to be treated.
Thank you so much for sharing your life experiences with us. This has been so impactful for me!
This is really touching. It made me cry. Thank you, a wonderful teacher.
I was in her kindergarten class the year she won teacher of the year I’m now in middle school and 12 years old she was the best teacher ever I will never forget her I homeschool now and I’m so proud of her I really miss her 😢
This is so powerful and full of love and understanding. We need more teachers like Lisa and her kindergarten teacher who was maybe the only one who saw what was going on. This is an awesome example of how it just takes one person to change a life. Teachers are in this very special place where they may be that person, who can help a life. Compassion, understanding, grace and insight are often neglected qualities of what teachers should demonstrate and practice more often. This was amazing ted talk and it touched me to see such a beautiful genuine person be so strong and honest despite the adversity and fears she had to face! Beautiful person with such a sad sad story 😥 this experience she had is just far too tragic to even imagine😞
I’m so proud of Lisa for her bravery. 🙏🏽 wish there could be more teachers like her. Through he pain she is standing up and making a difference. Bravo 👏 Lisa bravo 👏 👏
Compassion is not kind of so complex mechanics and it can be spread by your words, your hugs even your eye contact...
I truly admire educators in schools esp gradeschool. Their underpaid and underappreciated, its sad. There with our precious children maybe even more than the parents are. God bless each and every single one
As a teacher, I absolutely enjoy bringing motivation into my students' life. Hopefully, I can teach them much more than just languages! Thanks TED!
@Pavor this is one of the greatest comments iv ever read, teachers need to teach, not manipulate children into new age ideologies.
Math is the key. Im not good at math. But if u can make perfection from it. U win
i'm bawling like a baby rn .. i am a mix of emotions ..
i wish someone had cared this much ..
.. and i want to be the one to help all of these children being hurt 😭
thank you so much for this .. this is why i started school in January!
I am traumatized by my inner city middle school kids. Girls and boys slap each other and fight, take each others stuff, destroy laptops and school property, insult and threaten each other and staff. My anxiety is through the roof and the solution is always build relations and better lesson plans. I never yell (unless safety is involved) and I always ask them about their lives and interests, none of this matters. Therapy is usually done on a one to one basis but teachers are asked to be a therapist for 35k a year (plus student loans) in a room with 35+ children. The only teachers who have success are the ones that scream their heads off and that works for about 5 minutes. I was traumatized as a youngster too but I never was never doing any of the stuff I see today.
Thank you Lisa for sharing something so personal. If I can make a difference like that for even one student it will all have been worth it.
Such a strong women!
謝謝你 藍道夫老師..thank you Mr. Randolph
Everything has a reason!
I'm saying this so often!
Thank you for sharing your story and being the light for your students ❤
I want to be the light...
I work to achieve it ❤💡
As usual, you are the best Ted.

That's so cute! Thanks so! I was always alone. And it is a gift. Love you!
Very moving.
Love you Lisa❤️
Awsm mam. Ur story was really traumatic and thanks for letting the world know the real way to navigate the traumatised mind.
Thanks a lot
I cried so much through this video and its 8:30am on a Tuesday
Lisa Godwin certainly living up to her name, it gives me great joy to know such wonderful teachers are so actively attentive today. www.alanconlan.org
Beautiful story.♥️
Thank you, Lisa.
Hello TED from Egypt ❤
Beautiful video ❤️❤️❤️
Betrayal is a terrible thing.
Teachers in America should be paid way more. At least $60k a year.
The Flaneur Many stay after to help students and grade papers. And then they go home and grade more papers. And they have to spend their summer planning for the next year. And they have to do regular training in order to continue teaching. They go to college for at least 4 years... they deserve $60k
I came for avid cornell notes on ted talks and left crying
Also keep in mind that something could be happening when a student’s grades significantly drop. Sit up and take notice, and carefully check into what’s happening.
Her accent is attractive, does anyone know which country's accent is it? or region?
She almost sounds like she has an Murican accent
J K she is from The United States of America’s. She is from North Carolina. She is my daughters teacher.

Hi
I was talent student but i was naughty .
This is storyof class nine . I give pendrive to my feiend and he put some rap songs of vulgar words and my father knew it and complain it to my math teacher . Despite of calling me in alone and telling not to listen songs like that he announce that i am used to watch pron which was matter of shame for me for that child who has jst become 13 yrs who has just reached his teenage . From that date till the ending of my school lfy i always find me below other ,i cannot raise head infront of friends . So teacher should mind each and every word they say because that affect a lot in child psycology😖😥
Start working out

i need to contact with the main office, I was abused from one of TEDx organization ..plz help
Teachers should be like gto
Should be parents
Hi
Yes me. Trauma not abuse. Indeed He looks like a nice guy. Awwee. Poor her. Beautiful lady inside & out. God's love devine intervention. I never had that help. Why was there never curiosity or knowledge to search there is allot. Beautiful cheerleader. She is lovely. I'm a cheerleader at heart. Yes Whitney Houston song my 6th grade graduation.
Teachers Are Not trained professional counselors and should Never attempt to try and replace them. This is horrible advice.
dreamingwolf8382 offering a listening ear and signposting to relevant professionals is not a specialism it’s human nature... 🙄
She did not say the teacher provided "counseling", she was referred to the school counselor. Teachers can be aware of trauma's impact and try to provide calming atmosphere, nothing wrong with being flexible anf providing alternatives. I do agree you should NOT "infuse yourself" into student's lives.
You are correct, this is a horrendous attempt by TED to replace teaching with preaching. We live in a world where teachers are the no 1 cause of stupidity.
It was about noticing and see something say something more then here counsel
well,my tutor is always on her business. 6.am sent, message return 6pm
Maybe this kind of teacher only lives in speech, most teachers are just doing jobs.
Gonna be real, I wouldn't trust a single teacher I've met to help someone else with their trauma. They seem to be unable to help themselves with their own.
teachers with autopilot deception is their excuse for laziness
By not teaching
我英语太差了,只能看中文字幕🙃
So she didn't want to go to school, her only safe place? She was fearing looking this man more than being directly abused by another? What is this thing with a safe place? I didn't got it.
Before going to school she was excited and thought it would be her safe place, but after getting there she found that man - here teacher- may he had resemblance of some kind to her abuser.. Then she got scared and refused going to school.
@@hibatullahelamin And why a man, resembling her abuser is worse than the abuser himself?
ХОРОШО because in the one place she could finally escape pretty much her abuser had found her there too
@@katrinablackwood7909 Her home wasn't a safe place, but she refused go to school. That means it was even more unsafe. That means he was even worse than the real abuser, despite not being abuser at all. It doesn't make any sense to me.
@@XOPOIIIO we can't judge a mentality of a child using our mature standards, plus better the devil you know than the one you don't.
Why you always think negative that me with dad
My no me pyaar ho
This sounds like the orientation speech at a hard luck McDonalds
Unless they are the cause of the trauma.
I told my teacher that my brother burnt down my Minecraft house and she laughed. Anyone know where can get an AR15?
Lmao, most American teachers can’t help their students navigate 6th grade reading
Am the fisr commentor
How about teachers just teach?
DubBeGood bud A good teacher is all one troubled kid needs to turn his life around.
@@THELANKANCOMRADE It blurrs sociological lines that leads to teachers becoming the new ideologues. And trust me most new teachers are just kids fresh out of colloge which are a melting pot for far out political movements - because college professors didn't stick to teaching. Now their going after school teachers. Thanks Ted!!!
Sure! Please upload your video of you teaching a class with traumatised children.
@@NROS2012 All children are not traumatised dumbass.
Hah! My teachers wouldn‘t do something like this. They can‘t even teach! They just from internet copied pages and all they say is: Answer ist. And then they ask, why 3/4 pf the class fails in the exam, and why we are so slow in course. All they do ist doing something on their phones or computers, but definitely not for school. They get paid for doong absolutly nothing!! You can find their exams(sadly without solutions) and documents online...
Let us applause reality. Oh, hang on, nobody cares. To mention the fact she wanted to become vulnerable and transparent is pathetic. Get a grip.
Thanks for letting everyone think Mr Randolf is a pedofiel at first. I’m sure he appreciates that so much.

I wished that most of my female teachers continued with my lust but they generally didn’t take advantage. Shame.
Her accent is the definition of the South.😂
I got my trauma' s from teachers.
