Can I just say that you are indeed a magical unicorn for making motherhood convivial again! My little people will benefit greatly from implementing these new experiences. Thank you Autumn!!!
I finally joined the common place for the book study coming up. I've listened for awhile kinda "getting it" and wanting to understand this love for books. I think I'm starting to understand I might not "get it" bc I simply do not have a foundation of good books to pull from. I didn't understand how books can shape good and beautiful thoughts bc I don't have any books to pull from. I'm starting Naria with my kids this school year. Thanks for the inspiration!
Ah, Narnia! My absolute favourite. There's no coming back from the wardrobe. (And, for me, this series rerouted my entire literary life in 2018. I hope it does the same for you!) Very happy to have you in Common House for the Abolition of Man group!!
Glad you’re recommending people get parenting ideas and advice from fiction books, as opposed to parenting books. I’m reading Understood Betsy and the parenting books were exactly the same back then as now!
Yes! I've learned my mothering and theology have been deeply shaped by stories. They pull on more than just my head knowledge (even though I enjoy-and need-good, non-fiction books too)!
What an incredibly inspiring idea! I hope that as my children *and I* grow, we can be inspired by the characters we read; that we can see the good and the bad and be encouraged to fly.
WOW!!! This is seriously the BEST!!!!! Not only are you talking about wonderful classics, but learning from mothers on how to raise lovely children, but also meshing ideas together in a way that is uplifting and light for your children!! I love this video and idea SOOOOO much!!!
I don't know of any other of your videos or ANY video recommended to me by UA-cam ever that came at a better time. My cheerfulness has been dwindling lately as I progress into the 3rd trimester of pregnancy, and I really needed everything you said. I have not read Little Men, but I should ASAP. Thank you!
Congratulations!! But yes, third trimesters can be hard and LONG. Grab Little Men and maybe some Wodehouse (Leave it to PSmith is one of my favourites!) because both would be a gift in such a season!
I've heard many things about Little Men but have yet to read it! After watching this I'm bumping it up the list. Thanks for the inspiration, I've been struggling to retain conviviality in our homeschool and this might be something to try!
This reminds me of the book “mothering by the book”, the author tells of books that have helped her in seasons of her life and mothering. I really enjoyed reading it and got it me thinking of how reading “for fun” books actually inspired, teach and play out characters that build you up, maybe even far better than self-help or parenting books would.
Such an encouragement! I have two girls and just read Little Women for the first time. It completely captured my imagination! I keep thinking of how this or that character would react in a situation and how they overcame their hardships. It’s a book that will stick with me for a long time.
I'm pretty sure this may be the magical fix for all parenting and misbehaviors! I was laughing out loud so hard at the bum smacking story that my husband and daughter stopped their lesson and stared at me. This is such a fun way to handle such a difficult part of parenthood; thanks for bringing the levity!
Have you read the "Little Britches" books by Ralph Moody? They are his auto biography of his childhood growing up on a Colorado ranch around 1908. These books are so beautiful and yet I never hear anyone talk about them! They were some of the most formative books of my childhood and now reading them as a parent I think constantly that I want to be like his father and mother!
My 6 year old absolutely loves the Little Britches series. We started it as a Daddy read-aloud at dinner time and my son begged to begin listening to the book on audible as well and he ended up speeding through all of the books in the span of a month or so. We live on a farm and he is glued to his daddy's side so this series really hits home with him. It's fantastic!
Hello Lady Tittlemouse, I'm Mrs. Tiggywinkle!! Or, at least that's what my daughter calls me lol. We need to come up with a Tea Time name for her now. She'll love it❤
Loved this video! And I can totally relate to the “bum smacking”… last year my toddler went through that phase during the lenten season . Let’s just say I was embarrassed on more than one occasion at the presanctified liturgies during prostrations. 🤭
Reading Swallows & Amazons now, so I am looking forward to experiencing more of the mother from that book! I mean, she is already pretty chill as a mom letting them go to a deserted island ha. Thanks for the inspiring idea!
Right? Sure, four children, just go live on an island for holiday. I like to tell myself they have a naval officer for a father so...comes with the family territory.
I love this! To be honest, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is one of my literary models for working with children. I am a new first time mom and step mom but before that I was a teacher and home visiting educator.
Thanks for sharing, such wonderful ideas! Parenting books tend to lean prescriptive (many I’ve read offer actual “scripts” for a variety of situations!) and I can see how just as observing/learning from an irl friend/experienced mother are that much more inspiring, well-developed fictional portrayals of motherhood could be too! Time to read more stories. We read “Swallows and Amazons” recently and I really liked how the mother glided so smoothly and convincingly into pretending to be Queen. Also, I’ve been wanting to say for a while now that I really appreciate the beautiful paintings you choose as your videos’ thumbnails. Thankful for your work here!
I'm so glad you enjoy the paintings! I'd rather see those than my own face-ha! There is a time for some prescriptive help (I've even stolen favourite lines from books!) but when cultivating virtue (even in ourselves), rules tend to fail where living ideas can inspire and meet you in a variety of moments not just this-one-very-specific-instance.
I’ve read Little Women, but not Little Men, yet. I think maybe it’s time. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and re-arranging of my life and priorities lately, in order to make time for Mother Culture, so I can pour goodness into my Children’s hearts instead of trying to bully and threaten and scold them into being good. This came up in my feed at the perfect time. Incidentally, not that this is particularly important, but Mary Poppins in the book is absolutely nothing like the film Mary Poppins. After getting the first two MP books on audio book for my children (without vetting beforehand, because it was Mary Poppins and I didn’t think I had to), I gradually became more and more uncomfortable… she was emotionally and mentally abusive, NOT kind at all, and messes with the children’s understanding of truth (this is a constant theme in both books)…and then at the moment when the sun and moon and all the stars bowed down to Mary Poppins and said “Hail, Mary Poppins!” (I kid you not, book two, I believe, right after the universe circus), I had a gentle but serious conversation with my children, and then deleted them both. I learned later, after a little research, that the author was part of a writers group that was into the occult, and intentionally wrote occultist things into their books for children. Who’d have thought?
OH MY WORD. YES. I have put Book Mary out of my mind! We started reading the book and I was flabbergasted at Mary. I read a little further to see if she became Julie Andrews and she never did so I quit reading! She was a terrible woman in the book. Thank you for bringing this up! Julie Andrews Mary all the way!
@@thecommonplacehomeschool Yeah, I’m normally not a huge Disney fan, but I must say, this is one instance when Walt’s version was a definite improvement on the original material.
What a fun idea, I needed this inspiration. Dickon and Martha’s mother in “The Secret Garden” helped us spend a lot more time out of doors for the health of all of us this summer 😄 You’ve convinced me, I’m about to abandon everything and read Little Men before the start of the academic year.
I relate so much to your intro as for your need for these books to help build your own character. Oh man how I strive to be more convivial, my daughter compared me to Marilla when we were reading Anne of Green Gables. 😅
Also I just finished the video I love love love the wouldbegood tales idea. What a creative way to turn naughty moments into teachable lessons in a light way. This is basically what someone like me who has to work so hard at being light hearted needs. Also I have girls, and they argue about everything (it’s exhausting but it seems to be a sport l for them!) and lately about who is Cinderella…and often times about who loves each other which I mean is so cute that i just have to let it go.
Mark my words: one day I will write a dissertation about Mary Poppins at Mother Academia University 😁 I also like to tell all mothers to remember that Mary Poppins was a magical nanny…and even she had a cook and a housekeeper. We’re not meant to do everything alone. Give yourself grace 😁
Ha! 100%. I tell myself the same thing about all of my favourite characters: they have cooks, gardeners, nursery maids, etc! In fact, I was just rambling about Jo March only having to match the socks during bath time because two other helpers bathe them and Nursey gets them in bed!
Thank you!! This is very inspiring. What was the name of the series you mentioned - with the 4 kids on the adventure (but 5 total) ? I couldn’t catch the name.
Congratulations! I have 3 boys as well 9, 5, 2. I also loved Little Men. We all have been loving tales from the sea; the Voyage of the Dawn Treder, Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe, and Swallows & Amazons and then we make our own maps and battle sea serpents. 😊 Enjoy!
Autumn, I’m so thankful you are giving of your time and beauty in this particular way to the world! Ahh so appreciate it. Also, if you ever come to Steubenville, OH we have a chapter of beautiful mothers who live in community all inspired by Mason’s philosophies! 🤍 Also…. Where did you get your dress or top 🙊😅?
