  • You know how the "don't do anything but think about Jesus" line makes me grumpy this time of year. While I charged us all not to be the White Witch last year, I want to expand this idea by offering a feast of ideas we'll all need in the coming weeks as we move through Advent, Christmastide, and beyond.

Hello Mrs. Kern! Even though I'm currently high school senior with no children in sight, your videos on classical education + 'human living' have been utterly fascinating to me these past few months and I want to thank you for opening that wardrobe door a bit wider with your videos and podcast, even for someone like me who probably isn't your intended 'audience'.
One Christmas/Winter book rec I have (especially as a good read aloud for kids) is Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St. John! Lots of lovely food for thought in it, especially about forgiveness. Even as a kid, I felt like Patricia St. John's stories were some of the few that demonstrated Christian messages without feeling so overbearing/preachy :)

I love that you're here! Everything I talk about is for persons and if you can take the principles and apply them to your current season, you're right on track. These are ideas for persons!
I've been recommended Patricia St. John before and now I'll certainly have to follow up! Thank you so much for the recommendation!

Goudge is one of my favorite authors. Ever. For me, her books are “soul-mirrors”: they show me my weakness and striving. They are my anti-twaddle, overflowing with living ideas, goodness, truth, and beauty, while also being real about human foibles. They are some of my most marked, “commonplaced” books ever. I am so happy E.G. has made an appearance on your channel.

Soul mirrors! Yes. I’ve never read a book that pulled on my imagination as much when I wasn’t actively reading it. Any bit of free time and my mind ran straight to the characters-those I’m like and don’t want to be, those I want to be like, what made one’s pain a gift and another’s a curse. I can’t wait to read more of her work.

Nooooo! Don't dog ear your books! Once those get older those bits will fall off! I learned the hard way. (Let me tell you, it's no fun trying to tape those little triangles back on.)

How you describe the Goodge book reminds me of the teachings of St Benedict- ‘The Way of St Benedict’ is all about living a sacramental life wherever you are. I saw my home and my role within it in a very different light when I began to view it as my cloister or enclosure, in which worship of the Lord is central to every act from laundry to bathtime.

Ooh, thank you. I read his monastic rule when I was completely Tsh Oxenreider's Rule of Life course and enjoyed it. I'd like to know more about his way of living!

I love the idea of the harvest, I’ve never heard this language around parenting before and knowing you, I’m guessing you weee introduced to it in a book? If so, I’d love to hear about it!

Ah, on a video this old, I'll need a little more context or a timestamp to help me remember the phrasing!

Hi! Yes around 6 min you start talking about doing the good work to help your children form good loves to reap a good harvest. It’s just lovely phrasing, upon watching it again it might be an Autumn thought! Love the imagery either way!

@@teresacarpenter7266 I was probably thinking of "Do not grow weary in doing good for at the proper time you will reap a harvest". It sounds like a spin on that!

A friend let me borrow The Dean's Watch months ago and it has just been watching me from my TBR shelf...for such a time as this apparently. When I'm done with The Hobbit anyways. Love these ideas, thanks Autumn!

This was so fun! As a mom of two girls and one boy, it is very true that no one considers you a “boy mom” if you’ve had daughters first 😂 Currently reading Little Women and didn’t even know there was a sequel! Adding all of your recommendations to my ever growing TBR list.

Haha, isn’t it funny? For a long time, the “boy moms” only had two and would make these comments to me-a mom of a girl and two boys!-about how I just couldn’t understand.
      Oh, I understand.

The Dean's Watch is so very lovely! I like your idea of reading Dickens with your husband. Goudge and Dickens have other short Christmas stories as well. I plan to read I Saw Three Ships by Goudge which I haven't read yet. I do love a good book of poetry this time of year, too. Thank you for helping us nurture mother culture. Always a delight!

Goudge is brilliant! I’ve read a few of hers including The Dean’s Watch this year. The Little White Horse was another of hers I read this year and it’s technically a children’s book. I think it would be brilliant for a pre-teen or teen. I think I saw it on AO’s year 3 booklist and this video reminded me to think over if I want to read that to my 8 yo or hold off for a couple of years. Thanks for the recommendations and the reminder about The Dean’s Watch! I want to reread it soon.

Someone in Common House described Goudge as one who could "write the soul of each thing" and I think that about sums it up!

Also got into Goudge this year. The Little White Horse captured my girls and I so much. And then I read The Rosemary Tree - which wasn’t extremely captivating, but I also found myself continually thinking about the characters!

Do you know "The Runaways " by Elizabeth Goudge? One of her children's books but I came across it a couple of years ago and enjoyed the sacramental and redemptive qualities. Perhaps it is also an insight into her views on education! I do enjoy your videos, Autumn. Im not a homeschooling mum but a retired teacher who appreciates your philosophy of education.

Love this book list! Can I recommend an author I think of as the Victorian Elizabeth Goudge? Charlotte Mary Yonge! Her books are so good at showing sacramental living without feeling saccharine. C.S. Lewis was also a huge fan.
