He is by far the best historian and narrator on youtube. Yes, such a soothing voice. Truly sends you into a relaxed aura...He is a fellow Aussie originally from Melbourne, ( I think) and now lives in Europe.
This is one of my husband’s favourite novels. He introduced me to it when we first met. You provided a lot of information about de Maurier’s personal life that I had no idea about.
The novel “Rebecca” was on the reading list in my high school- just one of the many novels I read for book reports. The writing and story were so fascinating and when I saw the old movie of the same title, it became one of my favorites. Thank you for this thorough, well-written stroll down Memory Lane! I knew nothing about duMaurier. Very enjoyable.
When I was just starting out as a proofreader at G.P. Putnam and sons publishers we got the manuscript for her last novel, World Without End (1979). There was such a stir about getting this manuscript, and we were told that she was a legendary writer. The book was strangely compelling, about unrequited but loyal love over a lifetime, and I never forgot it
Was World Without End, the novel that you read, ever published? I don't see it listed in Wikipedia or on Amazon. I'm wondering if it was published under a different title, and you are saying it's a novel not a short story.
This was really interesting, thank you. One of my very elderly neighbours here in Cornwall told me that when she was young she had known Daphne's family and spent time with them, she did night watch during the war with Daphne's sister on one occasion. She said Daphne wasn't as friendly and was a little more reserved with everyone. I wished I'd asked her more at the time, I bet she had some tales to tell.
Oddie you always tell these stories with such a caring nature. What a very sad and confused woman she was. Very sad. You put such alot of work into your presentations. There is no one who does it better As always beautifully told and I thank you for keeping us entertained. Have a lovely week and keep well.
I also loved her novel "Frenchman's Creek". It had everything… romance, adventure, intrigue, and much more. "Jamaica Inn" was another terrific yarn. Daphne certainly had an amazing gift.
Another great story!! I remember reading Rebecca as a teenager. I should re read it as an adult. I’m sure I’d see more now in her words. Thank you for all your hard work 😊
Oddie, Rebecca is one of my favourite novels. I have read it 3 times and watched all the versions of the movie. It is an addictive read. The first time I read it , I was 14 years old and couldn't eat or sleep until I finished reading the book. My mom was very upset at me for not eating. I had a flashlight 🔦 which I snuck in bed with me. Thanks for informing us about the Du Maurier family story.
Happy Father's Day from the U.S.!😊 and thank you Oddie, you really brought her to life with such personal details. Her relationship with her Father was very disturbing😱 and left her with terrible scars that lasted til the end
I've read Rebecca many times, starting when I was 14. Now I'm 67.It's still one of the best books I've ever read. I really love this video. Thank you Oddie! Love to you and Oddette.
Ok I'm starting to freak out, everyone is saying happy fathers day....I'm was..positive fathers day in Australia is in September, now I'm worried I'm getting dementia 😳🥺🥴💞..
Thank you so much Oddie Beau for this amazing story. I have missed you and was so happy to see your notification. Much love to you and yours. So sorry about your dear little dog passing. Tears in my eyes for her. ❤️❤️
You have done a wonderful job of telling Daphne’s story Oddie. She was a very complex individual living in a quite dysfunctional family at an interesting period of time. Her father was rather a piece of work, and clearly did her no favours with regard to stability. I hadn’t realized the extent to which she identified with Rebecca, but perhaps that is why it is such a deep read. I enjoyed this very much, and, as always, delighted in all the little animations and special details you put in for us. The music was perfectly suited. Sending you and your beloved much love and light.🖤🇨🇦
I appreciate that Tamarra, thank you so much 😊 Absolutely agree with your comments regarding dysfunctional family, that she certainly experienced - albeit in a very nice setting - wealth will provide that decorative frame. I think a lot of people can identify with Rebecca, in the sense that most of us have an insecurity that there are others are better than us - and I think the large house Manderley is like our memories, a large brooding mausoleum with the turbulent sea (our emotions) swirling around it. Well it’s my take anyway 😄 Very glad you enjoyed the animations and the music my friend, sending Richard and yourself much love and light 🌹🌟

Oddie, This was fascinating about Daphne du Maurier. I saw and liked the movie "Rebecca" which was Alfred Hitchcock's first American made movie in 1940! Other famous opening lines in Classic books were Moby Dick......"Call me Ismael!" and also in the book "A tale of two cities" opening line."......It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...." Thanks for the upload ❤❤
Those opening lines are wonderful! 🎉 Another good one is from The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley - The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.
Excellent video, thank you! I've read Rebecca, but it was a long time ago. Loved it. I didn't know that much about Daphne, so I was surprised about the conflicts regarding her sexuality. I feel sorry for her. Sounds like her dad did her an injustice. Thank you again.
I really enjoyed this. Du Maurier was such a complex and compelling person. You did a good job of putting all the pieces of her life together. I had no idea how remarkable her life was
"Rebecca" is one of those novels where to this day I vividly remember the experience of reading it for the first time as a teen and being completely caught up in the atmosphere of it. I feel bad for Daphne's sister, but for her to title her memoir "It's Only the Sister" is actually pretty funny.
Great writing/narration about such a tormented and talented woman's life. Specially loved The infernal world of Branwell Brontë among all Mrs Du Maurier's books. Also, that video about Julia Haşdeu was wonderful, truly fascinating story !
Lovely presentation. Weird how the rich live. I so miss the old bookstores! Purchased many old out of print old books and learned so much reading them. Cheers again x
Thank you for the overview - I didn't know especially about her early life, but I did know a bit about her marriage. I read REBECCA last year - marvelous story - and I've also read her book on Cornwall and the short story collection published by the New York Review of Books (includes "The Birds" and "Don't Look Now" along with unpublished stories). Many many years ago I read TRILBY, a real potboiler!
Your videos have really become some of my favorites. I suppose it is your topics you select. They are well made and you can tell you put a lot of time in them.Rebecca was one of my favorite Hitchcock movies.
Always love your stories! Very sad she never found her real happiness except in her writing. Milton Hall is magnificent! I’m in hopes you keep having these intriguing stories, it’s like a small escape for me. Take care!! ❤️❤️
I think the same thing happened with a friend of mine who ended up transitioning from m to f. As a male, his mother was continually criticizing him- emasculating him really. Now that he is a she, they are "best buddies". Needless to say, her psychological torment continues because her awful upbringing. Do i know it for a fact that she's not really transgender? No. But I've seen enough to make it a good probability. Deep psychological help was needed before anything.
I do so agree with you. The father - daughter relationship, like the mother - son relationship can sometimes develop into some pretty heavy psychological elements. I think Daphne du Maurier coped very well (the little I have read about her) because she was able to put so much into her writing which was probably very cathartic.
Oddie, thank you. I read Rebecca many many years ago. Your description of du Maurier’s life was as usual very thorough and moving. I really enjoyed it. Sent you a little thanks. I do so appreciate your work.
I remember reading Rebecca many years ago at school and years later I named my daughter after that said name. One day during lock down in the height of the Covid, I said let’s read it together.. its now became a wonderful memory sitting in the garden reading this wonderful masterpiece. Such a interesting video on this great author, thank you so enjoyable.
When I was a little girl, in the 70's, I remember watching the Spanish translation of the Brazilian telenovela "La Sucesora". It was scary and very good, I remember that It was set in the 20's and there was a scene where they were wearing those strange bathing suits form that era. I remember the cars and the art deco deccor and the short hair. .
I loved this story I wonder if you could find her books. Thank you dear Oddie. My love for you and Mrs Oddie. Be safe my friend. Happy Father's day to you and all your dad listeners.💕
I learned so much about Daphne from this, and I love your voice. Rebecca was my mother's favourite book. She told me many times about how she'd gone on a vacation in her youth and was so captivated by the book, she spent most of it reading. I miss you, Mom.
Thank you for this video. “Rebecca” has always been my favorite novel and movie as well. The first time I saw the movie, I fell in love with Manderley and fantasized about living there. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Rebecca’s bedroom. It was love at first sight. Oh, those windows! ❤️
Thank you so much for this wonderful biography of Daphne du Maurier! I first read the novel when I was 17 and have loved it ever since. Excellent vlog.

Excellent video, thank you! I've read Rebecca, but it was a long time ago. Loved it. I didn't know that much about Daphne, so I was surprised about the conflicts regarding her sexuality. I feel sorry for her. Sounds like her dad did her an injustice. Thank you again.
I’m very glad it was to your liking, thank you so much for your great feedback my friend!
I really enjoyed this. Du Maurier was such a complex and compelling person. You did a good job of putting all the pieces of her life together. I had no idea how remarkable her life was
I’m very glad it was to your liking, thank you so much for your great feedback my friend!
Another MasterPiece! Thank You Oddie! This Production was Beautifully Done!
😊 Much appreciated, thank you kindly!
I really appreciate your positive feedback - thank you very much :)
Lovely presentation. Weird how the rich live. I so miss the old bookstores! Purchased many old out of print old books and learned so much reading them. Cheers again x
So glad you enjoyed the presentation - very much appreciated 😊
I so enjoy the artistry of each piece Oddie posts. Each video is a sort of meandering beauty. Well done - as usual.
Many thanks!
Absolutely superb presentation Oddy.
I’m very glad it was to your liking, thank you so much for your great feedback my friend!
Your videos have really become some of my favorites. I suppose it is your topics you select. They are well made and you can tell you put a lot of time in them.Rebecca was one of my favorite Hitchcock movies.
That’s very kind of you my friend, so glad you’re enjoying my content - thank you for reaching out with your positive feedback.
Always love your stories! Very sad she never found her real happiness except in her writing. Milton Hall is magnificent! I’m in hopes you keep having these intriguing stories, it’s like a small escape for me. Take care!! ❤️❤️
Very glad you enjoyed the presentation, thank you so much for reaching out with your great feedback!
What a Lovely video, Oddie! Thank You!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't think Daphne Du Maurier was transgender. I think she subconsciously picked up on her father's wish to be a son.
I agree.
It could be both. We will never know for sure, but her experience (minus the incest) sounds a lot like the trans masc experience.
I completely agree. I wonder if it was about her seeking power as well. Better to be a man, who can do those things to weak women, you know?
Oddie, thank you. I read Rebecca many many years ago. Your description of du Maurier’s life was as usual very thorough and moving. I really enjoyed it. Sent you a little thanks. I do so appreciate your work.
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback, and also for your kind donation - very much appreciated. 🌹

I remember the cars and the art deco deccor and the short hair. .
I loved this story
I wonder if you could find her books.

I appreciate that, thank you 😊
Thank you for this video. “Rebecca” has always been my favorite novel and movie as well. The first time I saw the movie, I fell in love with Manderley and fantasized about living there. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Rebecca’s bedroom. It was love at first sight. Oh, those windows! ❤️
You're most welcome, thanks for your feedback!

Did you mean Joan Fontaine Maurice? I'm confused.
@@smorgasbroad1132 Yes, She must have meant Joan Fontaine. Not Bette Davis who wasn't in "Rebecca'
