The innocence that leads to some cliché lyrics and tropes on this album is a big part of what's so lovable about it. It's pure. Being in that fuzzy coccoon makes my cynicism evaporate.
I love this album, it’s still my favourite album of theirs to date. Party Police and Adult Diversion are incredible tracks and there isn’t a miss on the whole album
i originally thought alvvays was worse than antisocialites, but i now prefer the damper, droney sound over their slightly drier/ tighter songs of antisocialites. but i dont know which i like better between it and blue rev.
I do agree that Antisocialites it's a tighter batch of songs with improved song writing. It's my favorite, but their debut has several songs that have a special place in my heart that their last two records don't always live up to. Part of that is more on a personal level, I listened to Antisocialites first during a much happier time in my life then went back and listened to their debut in a very hard time and helped me to get through it.
Alvvays are dope and I have enjoyed every album that they have done so far. I think the debut is the least diverse and basic version of their sound but I still love it a lot, the tunes are there. I'll push back on the "lifeless guitars" though I love Alec's leads and melody on "Ones Who Love You" so much. The playing is great I think it might be a production reason that you don't vibe with it maybe the general lofi tapey sound of it that you can't get into or sumthin.
Even if it isn't your jam, I am happy you decided to give it another try after all this time Melon. The band doesn't miss imo and can't wait to hear what they do next.
I don’t think you’re totally wrong on the strength of the album front to back, but I think of this album fondly because I was living in Toronto at the time. Very immersed and connected with the scene around Royal Mountain Records and bands like Hollerado, PUP and Alvvays. I remember seeing Alvvays open for PUP at a free show in a Public Library, and just being blown away by the band and the sonic landscape of the music. It wasn’t reinventing the wheel, but Alvvays were loved because they were ours. Toronto scene in the early to mid teens was a great time for fans of guitar music
I was just spinning this on vinyl like an hour ago! I still really like the album, I know there was a ton of jangle pop inspired stuff in that early 2010s indie era, but I really clicked with this album when I first heard it. I'll be totally honest though I haven't really gone back and listened to the older jangle pop mentioned here, so I'll have to take a listen to some of the records that popped up.
Hey Anthony, you should check out the album "Envolvendo Você!" by the band "Ravelly", it is an experimental electronic album of the genre "Technobrega", or "Techno-Kitsch", characteristic of the north of brazil.
Alvvays is probably the most consistent indie band from the last decade and to this day. Their debut is one of the better indie albums from its time, but definitely not the best, not even their best.
As someone who has completely fallen in love with all of Alvvays' music over the last 18 months, their debut is their second best album after Blue Rev. The lyrics are a cut above the overwhelming majority of the people working in that sound at the time, and the songs are just hookier and more memorable. That's the reason this album keeps getting played while the majority of their contemporaries got completely washed by Mac Demarco and his copycats (e.g. Peach Pit, Dayglow) in the following couple years. Also well timed to do this video now since Belinda Says got nominated for a Grammy and the ceremony is coming up, I feel like we will be seeing a lot more shoegaze sounds coming from the indie scene in the next few years.
That's pretty much my perception of the album: I like the Tweepop jangly style but I don't get crazy about it. It's nice and charming and easy listenable but it doesn't spark real enthusiasm within me. I prefer Belle & Sebsatian or Camera Obscura when I want to enjoy this kind of sound.
as someone who got into alvvays last year cuz a friend recommended it to me, very glad you made this vid lol cuz alvvays was far and away my most listened to artist and had the most streamed songs out of anyone on my apple replay
i completely agree and in fact couldn't even get into alvvays until their latest LP when it clicked. cannot wait to see what they cook up in their next album!
I absolutely love this album and it's my favorite of theirs - this video was a good respect even if the review didn't change. If there were a short list of albums I thought fantano underrated, they might've been: 1. The one in this video 2. Real Estate (Days and Atlas) 3. Todd Terje It's Album Time 4. Fleet Foxes debut
This is so random melon. I don't particularly have a strong connection to this album either. I think I just generally don't gravitate to shoegazy, dream pop sounding music especially in the purest sense. Party police and Archie marry me are definitely classics for me though. Definitely just too sweet and endearing not to love. And even while Im not a huge fan of this album, i think it's really lovely seeing people still celebrating it. Idk why but I think that anyone that says this is one of their fave albums I just know they're a big lovable softie, in the most unpretentious way.
Considering the production on this record, I feel like the sound on it is related more to the Calgary scene of post punk/noise pop from the late 2000s rather the jangle pop revival from Best Coast or Real Estate... Maybe that's why this album stood out during that time, and I still love it a lot.
We’ve seen this before Was I wrong? I went back and gave it a listen. I was right. In fact, I was probably more right than I realised at the time. Still, it’s good to challenge yourself
I have been desperate for new music for a while now. Finally, here i am discovering a new album i will listen to for the rest of my life.. The 2024 classics week will go down as the greatest of all time, and on top of that you are dropping even more bangers on the side. I am in my own renaissance. Thank you fantano❤
It's weird to me to have a favorable opinion of their 2nd and 3rd albums but not enjoying their first. They sound a lot like the same band they were then.
Loved this album, stumbled upon it in 2014 and that's when I got into this indie subgenre, cool to see that Anthony recommends Vivian Girls because I started listening to them while searching for more of this sound.
I do think that Alvvays have continued to get better in almost every way with each album release, but in a way I think the simplicity of their self-titled gives it a charm in a way that an album like Blue Rev doesn't offer, even if I do much prefer it. Their songwriting has for sure improved in almost every way but I still think they set themselves apart from the crowd as early as this first project in this respect. Witty lyrics and catchy melodies are still scattered throughout the record, and listening to Adult Diversion, Atop a Cake, Dives or Archie Marry Me on a sunny day has a unique allure that is hard to find in the rest of their discography. The Ones Who Love You and Party Police are beautifully written songs too that I think if recorded in the antisocialites days - when the band's sound had matuyred and the production had improved - could have easily fit into the record alongside songs like Dreams Tonite. The album only really grew on me years down the line tho after the release of antisocialites so it's for sure not an instant classic, but there's a lot to love about it, even in the context of their newer albums!
I was introduced to Alvvays when their 2nd album came out and it remains one of my favorites of that year, but when I went to check out their debut right around the same time, I felt very much the same way. Very samey sounding and uninteresting compared to Antisocialites, which was a phenomenal indie rock record.
Honestly, agree. Archie, Marry Me is the only song that I still play from that album. It was a mild mainstream indie album in a time where mild mainstream indie albums were rampant. They're a good band and each album is better, and even this album was okay, but it was just kind of okay. I feel like this happens a lot with bands/artists when they progress. Everyone wants to retcon or be cool and be a "true fan" by pretending that a successful bands earlier stuff was a masterpiece even when it wasn't. I'm not saying that's the case with people complaining the Alvvays album is underrated, but it's a trend and a potential factor.
One time I heard a number of songs off the "Alvvays" record played in a row in a French-style bakery. 10/10 experience. It was last year by the way, Not like nearer its release.
I can’t believe Anthony is finally admitting he is totally wrong about mbdtf all this time that it is truly one of the best albums of the 2010s with its very tight and clear concept
*Alvvays* nice to see melon revisit albums I love with kinder words or just generally more appreciative perspective. Feels like he’s reading my mind lately cause my darling Ultraviolence also got a relook recently lol. My friend got me into these guys last year just in time for their new record. Antisocialites is actually my least fave of the three, despite seeming to be their most beloved by the fans. Party Police was the first song I heard and still my favorite. Didn’t see anyone mentioning it here so I’ll be the one to do so. Gets me all feely every time.
I love Alvvays. I have all three albums and have seen them live. I think the first album is great. Their sound has evolved over the years, but I believe they started off in a great place and have just grown from there.
You weren't wrong. This record was unsophisticated indie-pop poseur drivel. Dead in the womb. It was 2014 and they were calling their band alVVays, FFS!
I love Antisocialites and Blue Rev but I was never crazy about this album. Bands like Beach Fossils, Real Estate, and Best Coast really burnt me out on this sound.
Yes, Anthony, we know any time you make a video questioning your old views on a particular album, you're just going to drop your pants and make us watch.
i absolutely love alvvays! antisocialites is probably my favourite record from them but pomeranian spinster is my fav song. if i were to rank their albums id rank the debut lowest but i still think its a great starting point for them and i like the record
Definitely, but I’m glad you’re taking accountability for what you did to that family of 5 in 2008
hivemind type comment
Or that whole plane thingy in 01
The Jacksons were never the same
@@EvWuzheredon’t forget that other plane thingy he did back in March 2014. I’m starting to see a pattern 🧐
Their screams were unsettling that’s for sure! 😅👍
We will ALVVAYS remember your mistake.
Common Mr Beat W
mr beat listens to alvvays?? hell yeah dude
The innocence that leads to some cliché lyrics and tropes on this album is a big part of what's so lovable about it. It's pure. Being in that fuzzy coccoon makes my cynicism evaporate.
That's the comment making me dive in RIGHT now. Thanks!
It makes my cynicism provoked
Alvvays? More like… Alvvays pumping out consistently great records
Outta pocket dude, not necessary >:(
I love that album, but 10 years sounds impossible, and I choose to reject your math without checking it
clearly fantano just zoned out while listening to next of kin if he finds the lyrics on the album weak
So happy you’re addressing all the allegations. It’s an important step for taking accountability
I miss Cal so much. Hope he's ok. Would be lovely to know how he's doing and what he's been up to all these years
I would love to see a Cal movie
mic sounds crispy in this video for some reason
I love this album, it’s still my favourite album of theirs to date. Party Police and Adult Diversion are incredible tracks and there isn’t a miss on the whole album
IKRR this is also my fav album of theirs and party police is also my fav
@@d1ivyan5hyea I agree this is my favourite album it’s a absolute 10/10 while blue rev is a high nine
Haven't watched the video or know anything yet but yes
i originally thought alvvays was worse than antisocialites, but i now prefer the damper, droney sound over their slightly drier/ tighter songs of antisocialites. but i dont know which i like better between it and blue rev.
Archie, Marry Me, Red Planet, Atop a cake, Adult Diversion are bangersssss
Red Planet is so underrated
I adore The Agency Group
That album has become one of my favorites of all time. It's my comfort album. I can listen to it on loop without getting tired.
hey, sometimes things are "by the numbers", but for some people those are lucky numbers, maybe even a jackpot. that's definitely a factor too
I do agree that Antisocialites it's a tighter batch of songs with improved song writing. It's my favorite, but their debut has several songs that have a special place in my heart that their last two records don't always live up to. Yes fantano, you were wrong about many things

i am an alvvays fan
Maaaaan . . . I though this had something to do with Cal chuchesta
Me too. I've been commenting on every video that Cal needs to come back.
Glad to have met another cal-colyte. Stay wack broski
Love this album, not my favorite of theirs but the songwriting ability was clearly there from the start. Excited to see them live in May

Yes
Of course
Always
i didn't even know that the reveiw was for a band called Always lmao that's funny
Yes. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
This album is a bit rough around the edges when compared to their two newer albums, but Archie and Adult Diversion are some of their best songs.
Ones Who Love You is the kinda song to last with you forever
It’s like Always but the w is broken suggesting impermanence.

Hey Anthony, can I have your Ginger vinyl record? I really want it
Too late to lament that you vote for Bush in 2004, Melon.
