IMO this is one of the better videos put together on this channel, as it is down to Earth and pretty accurate. I even gained something from it I did not know. At the age of 30 I could reflect on how I grew up near the falls, and by age 12 I lost track of how many times I've visited them and the area, and yet how little I know... for sure, about anything. It is true that many people die there each year. Most who do, do it intentionally, choosing to end their lives there.
It's funny that sometimes the non-natives know more history. I'm barely learning about my small town after all these years growing up here. I can't believe myself.
@@jayandlevvymonaz I agree with that sentiment in this context, but I don't think that non natives know more about anything to the extent they surpass the local native nor do they have any special edge - with ONE big possible exception and IF I am correct, that exception is what we mistake for some impressive take on the Back Of Our Own Hand...The best I can do to explain this is to recall the fact - The Eye sees not itself but by reflection. No ONE has ever gazed upon their own face directly, (In MY case I am grateful beyond belief - I don't HAVE to look at my own face except when I want to. I don't because I KNOW ...I'm one of the Best lookin' dudes I have ever seen. ANYWAY...Non natives simply have a perspective the native doesn't when it comes to his/her own stomping ground. I grew up on the Niagara River in Lewiston. I have always pictured a devil come out of those waters. There are multiple drownings EVERY single year! I have NEVER in my life thought Niagara Falls was beautiful. It is a death trap. A young teen just passed away a week ago. I have ALWAYS been terrified of Devils Hole and FIRMLY believe there is a dangerous spirit!
You could have included LOTS more! Like the creation of the Erie canal and how walking across the ice at the falls was a thing, as was ice skating & even carriage rides. vendor's and markets would spring up on the ice at the falls.

Born and raised in Niagara Falls NY not once ever even the 1 year since like 100 years ago when it did freeze over was ice skating or people allowed to walk on ice ect. In fact you can get arrested and fined for stuff like that
Lol. That took me a second to figure out. At first I was thinking, "What? What the hell do glow in the dark bugs have to do with mass amounts of water falling?!" Then it dawned on me. And I felt stupid. Haha
I've been there many times. The Horseshoe Falls seems so much further from the American Falls than the way I remember it. The second time I went, I remember a fabulous whirlpool up river. That was really worth seeing. I wish they'd change things so people could witness this again on a regular basis.
Same. My family is from there and I went many times as a kid and recently started going more often and it's a beautiful sight but it's not the reason I go.
I live about 25 miles away and go view it about every year don't go to the pay sights I've been to them before though... Only one u enjoy is the white water walk watching the class 6 rapids the most powerful rapids in North America..
Ridddle always does this. Advertises something in the title and doesn't really provide many answers, but leaves people asking more questions. I want to know more about what's in the cave.
The white water walk is nice watching the class 6 rapids most powerful in North America.. behind the falls is not to bad can't really see much but a wall of water falling in front of you unless you get lucky like one person did got hit by a fish... They moved the fence back since then.. they have the jet boats but they go past the hydro plant up to the wirlpool's class 5 Rapids they can't go into the class six rapids but a few years back there was two jet boats that were allowed that route going close to the Canadian shore not the center where the rapids reach a hight of over 15 feet and 4 kayaks that were allowed as well there are documentaries on UA-cam about it... Must have cost them a lot of money but that made it I would never do it that for sure...
The cable car got shut down probably shortly after you rode on it i was born in 88 and they shut it down when i was like 5 or 6 apparently it either went into disrepair or something
a car back in december 2021 a lady drove her car right in to the upper rapids. her body was removed that day from the car. but a few days later with the windstorm and them adding more water that goes over the car went over the falls

Actually, I've never been super interested in going to see the falls. I mean, it would be cool to. But there are so many other places id rather go and see. 😊
I’ve lived near the Niagara Falls my entire life, I’m from buffalo, and it’s just so weird when people talk about the Niagara Falls like it’s not a common thing. I forget people actually want to come here to see the falls. It’s just weird lol. But then again, I’ve seen the falls more times than I can count so I’m just used to it I guess.
heheheh😄 I live in Québec but never saw the falls. I dont know, Im so use to hear about it, its almost like if it makes the whole thing a bit less interesting. Until now, to me it was just a place where people go to get married hahah but seriously I realised only very recently how lucky I am to be only at a car trip away from the most powerfull waterfalls on earth, and that I have to see this once in my life - this AND yellowstone hihih!! - We dont have to go on the other side of the globe to see cool things, we have some here too! So... I plan to go on a camping trip this summer to see the falls YEAAAH!!! (well, unless if fuel $ dont stop to increase insanely like now😤)
Lol FACTS growing up in Niagara Falls NY when i became a trolly conductor i couldn't believe the amount of tourist that would shell out the insane prices that the park charges for the tours, food,ECT
It’s a bit spooky at night by bridal veil falls there’s barely any lights on the pathway. And you have an errie feeling just thinking about the people that mustve tried jumping over the falls and died, which with little to no lights on the pathways, you wouldn’t really know if one person went missing.
I live in Niagara and I go there a lot and I also when on the maid of the mist and the cave of the winds for a field trip at school and it was so much fun!
As a Canadian who lives in Ontario only a few hours away from this place, I ask if you visit please don’t throw your coins in the water 🤦 we already face enough pollution. But do come visit still! Niagara Falls city area is like a year long street Carnival.
My guess is that between 2025, and 2030 they'll stop the falls? By summer 2030, ill be 58 years old, so it would be interesting to revisit this video and see if my guess was correct.
There are man made caves behind Horseshoe Falls and you can go in them, for a price of course. There are lookouts to see the power of the water. And yes, it's all rock in there.
Born and raised here and let me say I watched this with a cringe at first So many get the stories wrong, but he did a wonderful job, but I have a little bit to add From the American side at night you can see a little square of light shining thru from tunnel on the Canadian side (it's kinda cool) As far as I know they have closed off Devil's hole cave (more of a cavelet in truth) because some Ahole was acting like a, well like a Ahole, putting himself and others in danger (what that is I don't know) What's really behind the falls are the legends Here are a few The bridal veil falls is shaped thin and long like a bride's veil trailing behind her The legend says, that back in the day when being a bride left at the alter could ruin your life, she calmly walked from the church to the tiny falls and threw herself over in grief, shame and ruin (of course the groom was foot loose and fancy free) The church is said to be the First Presbyterian of Nigeria Falls, both old enough and close enough (And still holding services to this day) The American Falls legend says the mighty native American God of thunder lives behind it (explains the noise) There are many versions of this story that have been muddled up and are far from the native American tale, but I'll tell you the legend I was told as a child There was a small village of native americans living above falls that were ill and dying in great numbers What they didn't know was that there was a great snake poisoning the water with his venom and then coming at night to feast on their spirits The chief of the village prayed to the mighty thunder god for help and followed up with a gift to the mighty god A canoe was filled with things that were important to each person The chief was first, laying down his bonnet He was followed by his braves giving up their best hunting knives, bows and arrows The women gave their best beading and children gave too, there was more than one toy in the now laden canoe This went on all through the day as each gave what they could, but always giving from the heart It was the chief's own daughter that gave most Atfer watching so many of her people and her mother die, she wanted to gift the mighty thunder god greatest gift anyone could offer, she would lay down her life for her village So, just before sunrise, she quietly went down to the canoe ahead of the others She slipped into the canoe, cut through its tether and was carried away by the swift moving waters By this time others saw what she had done and cried out in agony Her father tried to follow her in another canoe, but was held back by his braves As her canoe tipped over the brink of the falls and the mist of falls rose around her, she did not waiver in the face of certain death The mighty thunder god saw all this and was moved by the maid in the mist, he reached out his hand and caught her He brought the maid behind the falls to live with him Then the mighty thunder god went after the great snake and violent battle ensued The great snake was no match for the mighty thunder god The mighty thunder god took the great snake and whipped down the length of the niagara gorge The snake only stopped when the rock piled up behind him and then was covered by niagara river falling over his body hiding the snake from view and becoming ... ... the horseshoe (Canadian) falls BTW, if you search for the maid in the mist there is an illustration of her going over the falls with her father in his canoe trying to save her I know I said I wanted to add little bit, sorry it turned into a lotta bit
6:35 - Bodies will always be found in Niagara Falls. We have a homicide rate GREATER than Buffall. A crime rate GREATER than NYC. And a suicide rate that can topple the US. Niagara Falls was once a Mafia bed for illegal alcohol smuggling across the border. Today, Niagara Falls is the Western NY's crime capital of drugs. We have had mayor's who had "planned house raids" daily, hitting over 1,000 houses in a year and arresting multiple people and letting them out after a few months of rehab. Realistically, the crime in this city is further than just drugs, as one drug crime can quickly lead into: 1) Suicide via falls (many of my friends in my past...) 2) Killing and tossing into the river 3) Accidental OD by the river, and then washed down Additionally, we have boaters, swimmers, and tourists all attempting to swim in incredible currents. We have people attempting to best the rapids and get toppled under. We have people "go in for a dip" and never return. It's a "people" problem.
Again ... Spit them facts when i was working as a trolly conductor there i saw a tourist fall in because she sat on the railings between cave of the winds and terrapin point with a sun umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other and kept leaning to get a good angle in her picture angle got to high she lost her balance and before i knew it i just seen her yellow rain boots fly up and her umbrella goin down as her friend who could have took the pic for her leaned over the railings watching her fall it was messed up to say the least. My driver radioed it in but we didn't hear anything back about it because they didn't want the tourist on the trolly to hear about it over the radio but i asked about it when we got back to the cave of the winds for lunch break and sure enough they said it was confirmed she was gone ... It's sad also taking the bus from the uptown tops to pine Ave there was a guy at the bus stop who was at the bus stop with a 30 rack and his brother in law that was endlessly talking about how he was gonna drink it all then jump over the falls cause he was just diagnosed with cancer and instead of trying to talk him out of it his brother was drinking along with him and supporting it i was like what the actual f#*k!? Definitely a people problem 100 percent bruv

Strangers love to start lies about stuff they know nothing about... have you seen the movie on Aurore the horror one not the original quebecois ?
I barely survived falling down a few feet of rapids...

Went there once, absolutely beautiful! Loved every moment of it, 10/10 would recommend visiting it

I used to live on the second story off Main Street just South of the Whirlpool Bridge on the USA side and I remember on quiet nights I would sit out on the back roof and I could hear the Falls and see Canada during the Day.
i remember going in i think 2014 and it froze for the first time in over 100 years. it was pretty cool seeing that. i went back over the summer this year and went on the rapids walk and the journey behind the falls. i didnt know that much history was in the falls!

I've lived here my whole life and have never heard of people tossing in a coin for good luck? 🤔🤨
Must be on the American side. On visits with family from Britain, never saw anyone do that.
I grew up in Niagara Falls NY i know on the bridges between 3 sister's islands on the American side there's a spot to throw coins in and the spirit of the sister's are supposed to grant a wish or help keep you safe while your there but that's about it and really only locals know that tourists just do it cause they se a spot with a butt load of coins centered around a big rock below them lol
This is just a thought. I could be as wrong as an escalator in an outhouse, but unlikely. I thought I was wrong ...ONCE. But I was mistaken.

Do not stop the Falls unless I move out of Canada. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.

At least "Bullshit" was included.
Born and raised in Niagara Falls NY not once ever even the 1 year since like 100 years ago when it did freeze over was ice skating or people allowed to walk on ice ect. In fact you can get arrested and fined for stuff like that
March 1848 was the only time it froze over completely and people were allowed to walk on the ice. This was the days before lawsuits. Lol

I've been there many times. The Horseshoe Falls seems so much further from the American Falls than the way I remember it. The second time I went, I remember a fabulous whirlpool up river. That was really worth seeing. I wish they'd change things so people could witness this again on a regular basis.
Well information. Good show.

I visited in the 90’s when I was a kid, the maid of the mist and the cable car over the whirlpools is a must if you visit.
"What's hidden behind Niagara Falls?" - proceeds to talk about Devil's Hole which is far downriver beyond the Whirlpool.
I live in Bloomington, Texas 18 miles where La Salle was killed. The little town was named after him La Salle, Texas. He's cannons where found and they are now located in Victoria, Texas at the Coastal Bend Museum... I had no idea that he was all the way upstate, that's pretty interesting.

Actually, a portion of the Horseshoe Falls is in the United States. Many mistakenly state that it is entirely in Canada.
I thought it would be something epic but I realised I came to a history class:(
It’s a bit spooky at night by bridal veil falls there’s barely any lights on the pathway. And you have an errie feeling just thinking about the people that mustve tried jumping over the falls and died, which with little to no lights on the pathways, you wouldn’t really know if one person went missing.

Man made huge tunnels for hydro. My grandfather was one of the many thousands of people who helped build them.
also what they dont tell you is over the years the erosion of the falls has changed the flow and made it more dangerous for dare devils

There are man made caves behind Horseshoe Falls and you can go in them, for a price of course. There are lookouts to see the power of the water. And yes, it's all rock in there.
Born and raised here and let me say I watched this with a cringe at first
So many get the stories wrong, but he did a wonderful job, but I have a little bit to add
From the American side at night you can see a little square of light shining thru from tunnel on the Canadian side (it's kinda cool)
As far as I know they have closed off Devil's hole cave (more of a cavelet in truth) because some Ahole was acting like a, well like a Ahole, putting himself and others in danger (what that is I don't know)
What's really behind the falls are the legends
Here are a few
The bridal veil falls is shaped thin and long like a bride's veil trailing behind her
The legend says, that back in the day when being a bride left at the alter could ruin your life, she calmly walked from the church to the tiny falls and threw herself over in grief, shame and ruin (of course the groom was foot loose and fancy free)
The church is said to be the First Presbyterian of Nigeria Falls, both old enough and close enough (And still holding services to this day)
The American Falls legend says the mighty native American God of thunder lives behind it (explains the noise)
There are many versions of this story that have been muddled up and are far from the native American tale, but I'll tell you the legend I was told as a child
There was a small village of native americans living above falls that were ill and dying in great numbers
What they didn't know was that there was a great snake poisoning the water with his venom and then coming at night to feast on their spirits
The chief of the village prayed to the mighty thunder god for help and followed up with a gift to the mighty god
A canoe was filled with things that were important to each person
The chief was first, laying down his bonnet
He was followed by his braves giving up their best hunting knives, bows and arrows
The women gave their best beading and children gave too, there was more than one toy in the now laden canoe
This went on all through the day as each gave what they could, but always giving from the heart
It was the chief's own daughter that gave most
Atfer watching so many of her people and her mother die, she wanted to gift the mighty thunder god greatest gift anyone could offer, she would lay down her life for her village
So, just before sunrise, she quietly went down to the canoe ahead of the others
She slipped into the canoe, cut through its tether and was carried away by the swift moving waters
By this time others saw what she had done and cried out in agony
Her father tried to follow her in another canoe, but was held back by his braves
As her canoe tipped over the brink of the falls and the mist of falls rose around her, she did not waiver in the face of certain death
The mighty thunder god saw all this and was moved by the maid in the mist, he reached out his hand and caught her
He brought the maid behind the falls to live with him
Then the mighty thunder god went after the great snake and violent battle ensued
The great snake was no match for the mighty thunder god
The mighty thunder god took the great snake and whipped down the length of the niagara gorge
The snake only stopped when the rock piled up behind him and then was covered by niagara river falling over his body hiding the snake from view and becoming ...
... the horseshoe (Canadian) falls
BTW, if you search for the maid in the mist there is an illustration of her going over the falls with her father in his canoe trying to save her
I know I said I wanted to add little bit, sorry it turned into a lotta bit
I'm from Buffalo and never knew this story. Thank you

Realistically, the crime in this city is further than just drugs, as one drug crime can quickly lead into:
1) Suicide via falls (many of my friends in my past...)
2) Killing and tossing into the river
3) Accidental OD by the river, and then washed down
Additionally, we have boaters, swimmers, and tourists all attempting to swim in incredible currents.
