This is therapy... Have a talk with your younger self. Befriend yourself. Had a lot of trauma as a child & didn't realize how much I was disgusted in my younger self, until I did this. Self-destructive thoughts haunted me in later life!

His parents separated "Mom and dad are not together, they took different routes." When it was mom's turn to pick up nate, she'd hide her boyfriend in the trunk because he was a shady dude. Once she picked up nate, she'd drive a ways down the road, pull over and pop the trunk so the boyfriend could get out. She did that so noone saw her shady boyfriend which would've prompted nate's dad to not allow her to see nate. Great reaction!

Everyone talks about "Wisdom comes with age" I'm a firm believer that wisdom comes with experience. Some people have a lot more experience with things at a young age than others. Nate is in his 20s for all these albums and all these gems that he drops.

This 1 is still hard for me to listen to... I mean imagine being able to go back and tell your younger self about your life experiences and things you're going to go through but how they're going to shape you...👊🎈

I think dad left mom from addiction , and she was always hanging with shady people and dad didn’t want the kids around that so he would get custody from her again or something haha that’s my take on it

I think Nate had either admitted himself into a Psych Ward or visited a psych ward (or it was during therapy) that he got asked if he were to write a letter to his younger self, what would he say and what advice would he give? I’ve seen plenty of people have this theory on bigger channels- and the background noise in the very beginning of the song kinda goes on to solidify this in a way-
So if you think about it- this entire song IS a letter to his younger self (obviously)
There’s a double at the very end “That’s why I’m always looking down on you, I know it hurts” because he has to show sympathy but ALSO because younger nate is obviously shorter than current Nate so he has to “look down” At him
