Just to be clear sprite stacking and voxels are NOT the same thing. Voxels are one unit 3d cubes with 6 faces and stacked sprites are literally top down 2d sprites in layers slightly skewed upwards or downwards for each layer
I've seen this tool, definitely looks promising. The main thing I don't like is lack of color options. I suppose I could recolor after the fact, but that would be more work. I'll definitely keep an eye on it though.
I've followed the development of this tool closely in Twitter. As someone who've done this sprite stacking technique in using MS Paint in the past, I have to say this is a really awesome tool, even though it still needs some improvements, like being able to draw on every side like if it was the front one.
Hey! I meant the sides like left, right and back. Allowing other angles doesn’t seem really useful, and would probably be really hard to implement xD Also, a view mode that displays all the sides simultaneously might also be useful, as it might speed up drawing time :p Thanks for the tool, btw!
Interesting idea, but I'm not sure that someone will actually use it because there are better options: * Use voxels so you can rotate your image. Then export it like a *.PNG file. * Create a simple 3D object. Switch camera to orthographic mode, render it and save as PNG.
It's a focused tool for a specific need unlike a general tool repurposed to meet a workflow. Just having the domain name spritestack and marketing to that concept will get users needing a workflow
Yes, that would mostly be a matter of using a fixed palette consistently and rendering at a fixed angle, something MagicaVoxel easily handled. If you havent check MV out yet, you really need to! ua-cam.com/video/skUahv-6r-0/v-deo.html
@@RezonerSikorski Looks like you got it implemented now, I really like the animation feature especially with the path predictions in the animations saves alot of time
So if I buy this on steam, will I still be require to make payments on Patreon in order to create & export my own sprites for a video game I am working on?
The results look really noisy and hairy when rotated like they do in the preview. I think making a 3D model and then rendering it into an orthographic or an isometric projection sprite is a much faster and cleaner workflow with better results. With some rendering magic, the results will even look like proper pixel art.
Gimmie a sec, something went wrong with my corresponding blog post. (Don't directly link to sites anymore, since UA-cam now issues strikes against channels if the site hosts malware or anything else... making it ultradangerous to link to sites now ... who knows if this goes away in a year and some malware maker grabs the URL, or if their site got hacked...) In the meanwhile, it's just spritestack [dot] io
Actually, the point is doing it the opposite way. Build art assets in 3D with voxels and render those to 2D pixel art sprites or export as 3D models (I think).
It's nice to know that this exist, but for me personally, it's a strange workflow, I don't know, but it's not intuitive, if you ask me. Magical Voxel is better in my opinion. BUT magica Voxel is not available in browser.
@@Sacheen Yes you are right. Although I am moving away from that to simply voxels as they don't limit me to one angle (but I keep the topdown workflow anyway).

Yeah the inability to define the palette seems like a huge oversight. An easy feature to add and obviously one that people would want/need.

Ahoy. By the other sides do you mean like left, right and back? Or is it about for example 45 degree walls?

@@Tatubanana Hey. Use SHIFT + A/D
Wow, this program was super basic half a year ago, I discovered it a few days ago and it has improved an incredible amount since this video was made.
It would be great if MagicaVoxel would add the ability to edit slices as well.
Mike Wiering u can now import magicavoxel into spritestack

Very cool! Can you create pixel art style with the voxel editor you mentioned?

With animations this would be pretty cool.
I am working on animations but I first need to get objects implemented so you can divide your cube into hands, head etc

This is really good for topdown art.
So... erm... how do you use what you've made in a game?
Import it as an object in Unity or old school : import the images you want in a timeline in Flash ;)
man, i was about to make a software that exactly looks like this.
you can do it now, the dev ruined and abandoned this program :c

Tools like this generally don't do any dithering, aliasing, or blur for you, so smoothness is based on coloring by the pixel artist.
@@TheNewton dithering considered harmful anyway, pixel clusters is where it's at. a 3D render can also always be finished off by hand, if necessary.
@@arturkarlov3000 Can you point to specifics on "pixel clustering"? or search terms as nothing explanatory comes up.

man can this be turned into a game engine?
There's scripts for making this with Gamemaker Studio
Niceeeeeee
So technically everything I draw in 2D is transform into 3d. Great I pretty that what actual game companie uses

Yeah, I struggled with it, simply because it does not work the way my brain does. You're right though re the browser.
They work different, magicavoxel makes 3d models vs this makes a series or 2d sprites that give the illusion of 3d (I think)

too bad it has many bad reviews at Steam..
Or you can just play minecraft and make 3d pixel art
