How to See Your Targets Better

  • In the game of sporting clays, your vision is one of the least utilized tools we have in our arsenal. Sure, we use our eyes on every pair, however, I believe we can do a lot more than just look at the target.
I like to think about it like this, imagine yourself driving down the highway. You are just plugging along, pass a car here, go under a bridge there. Change the radio station, take a sip of water, and so on. Just an average day commute. Your in the left hand lane, and all of a sudden, without looking, you know you have a car that is in your blind spot or right next to you. You didn’t have to look, but you knew it was there.

Great video! How would you deal with look points, hold points and kill points when hunting since wild game aren't as predictable as sporting clays?

Thank you! Same exact concept. It just happens much faster. You see the bird in the distance, get an estimated kill point then setup your kill point for that shot. If the bird gets the jump on you, your eyes end up doing a lot of this work when you react to the bird popping up in front of you. If you can, think about setting up to where the bird is going to be and then get there.

I have difficulty with hard right and hard left targets (Trap). I cannot seem to get the correct connection with the target as it is very fast. Since of course I would not know which direction the clay with go, I cannot seem to find the right combination especially with my eyes positioning prior to calling for the clay. I tend to 'jerk' whenever these clays come out and usually its a miss. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

For trap shooting, my first suggestion is always to focus on eyes first hands second. Your hands and therefore gun will follow where your eyes are looking. Just ensure a nice smooth movement from side to side. Try to avoid a lot of up and down movement. You could even try holding the gun just a little higher and making a simpler lateral move rather than a diagonal movement. That’s my preferred method.
