My interpretation is that by “taking the late trains to faraway cities” it’s a metaphor for her being too scared of her own future, therefore, lagging behind everyone else as she spirals into depression and isolation from others.

I have a little extra to add to your theory, about the signs. If the girl really has social anxiety then it’s pretty common to try and find excuses that makes it okay for you to avoid people. Like not crossing the road or not buying a ticket. Instead waiting until no one is there to do what you have to.
In other words, for her it feels like everything is telling her to avoid/wait instead of doing it

I feel like the "Please wait for me" parts have to do with how it's so hard for her to go through the day and the fact that she chooses to be alone even if it means feeling lonely and feeling left behind by society and the experiences she's supposed to be having. It's like "Please wait until I'm ready, I'll catch up eventually" and the cities are representative of both these experiences and the people she'd like to be around at some point.
She has the sense that life should feel worth living, but in the meantime, she's on her way to that, feeling numb and alone in a lagtrain.

I've already come to the acceptance of Japanese songs and just went that if a banger, it's probably depressing.
About two-thirds of the time, it ended up being sad. So I don't know if it is just the producers I'm finding, or it's just the norm.

The existential dread of the coming day and needed solitude yet being scared and alone is something i may or may not relate to or struggle with lol, i think i agree more with the original theory you guys had; and i'm more attached to it, despite how interesting the other comment was. :0
I'd also like to add that i think the girl has a bad memory and it comes to her downfall sometimes, it may just be wishful thinking but the concept of "Grasping the words ive lost tight within my pockets" sounds like that to me, or maybe trying to remember her pre- made excuses to be alone :)

I think the whole “forgetfulness” makes sense too, bc no matter the full context- I think we can all agree it lines up with the idea of self-isolation and perhaps anxiety.
Whenever I think about my own experiences when everything more or less seems grey/limbo, or I feel heavy and tempted to go into “hermit mode”; There’s part of me that overthinks or is just unsure of many of my own thoughts, and so those thoughts either continuously linger or I “fog” them away (similar to sleeping to forget, kinda just ignore the thoughts).
Which reminded me of lyrics like “if you're unsure of lost words, then set off on the slow train.”
Overall, now that I think about it I do interpret it more as “isolation because things are/can be really big etc, but at the same time I don’t want to miss out” (more this rather than social anxiety). Which could probably lead to a lot of inner conflicts, “limbo” feeling, feeling depressed etc etc.
Along with matching up with the sign (which I'm pretty sure it's the "no entry" sign)

Lagtrain is the song I most relate to. My depression makes everyday repetitive, monotonous, and makes me anxious yet fearful of everyday. Every day is the same, like a constant loop, but everything which makes them different, or what could be different, worries me

I also started listening to this song right when it was released, but haven’t dove into the lyrics until now. I really empathize with the theme of using transportation as a means to escape the real world. One of my favorite things to do is to drive around alone blasting my music and singing along. It’s basically my “car therapy”. Even though traveling, especially with long flights and multi-day drives, is tough, I enjoy it because my only job during that time is to get from point A to point B. I am not obligated to talk to anyone or do anything else but wait and rest. Similarly to the girl, I like being able to escape reality in that way. I am also terribly lonely, but too afraid of people to socialize most of the time. To me, the signs are literally asking her to return to “real life” where the people are, and she still chooses to go to the train instead. In addition, the trains that connect the big cities (that likely have more people on them) have already departed, so she is able to take the local train without having to worry about being around too many people. When she can’t find the words she’s lost, she ends up doing something else to cope (like riding the train, going on a journey, etc). The girl is more introverted/reserved, which is why she clutches the words in her pocket. (Although, that part kinda trips me up because how can she clutch something that she doesn’t even know she lost in the first place?) The part that really resonated with me was when she didn’t like going when the train was packed because she preferred to ride it alone. I am always conscious of the presence of people around me, and I’d much rather be where I know I will be guaranteed solitude. I think the song is more along the lines of social burnout or something to do with wanting to be alone despite being lonely. When she talks about holding someone back while her hands are occupied, I think she is talking about holding herself back by being occupied. The train is something that keeps her occupied from fully participating in life. She is also very tired from everything (wheezing as she sleeps, faking her way through the day), which is why she wants to entrust everything to the swaying train car (she says “your everything”, but is talking to herself).
Damn that's really relatable, this is why I like staying up late too, it just feels so much more peaceful

I discovered a new song and producer literally just yesterday by browsing twitter, and I've been dying to tell people about the song and him as a producer because my GOD he's insanely talented. The song is 現実エスケープ (Genjitsu Escape) by tephe. It's only his SECOND uploaded/finished, but I honestly would never think that was the case if I didn't check his channel out, hoping for more, to only discover that he has only completed and uploaded one (1) other song (which is also very good). Like the talent is INSANE. He doesn't even have 1k subs, so he's an extremely small channel. Anyways! I'm not expecting or asking you to do a video on one of his songs or anything, but you should totally check him/Genjitsu Escape out for yourself ಥ◡ಥ.
Another song you should check out just for yourself, if you haven't already heard of it by now, is ぜんぶあんたのせい (It's All Your Fault (i think lol?)) by the band CIVILIAN. The original is great, but I would have totally suggested そらる's cover of it if it wasn't privated _(:_」∠)_. RIP cover... you will be dearly missed... (It was strictly a limited time promotional cover the band allowed him to do, so it was only up for like one or two weeks before it had to be privated). Anyways, the song SLAPS and the lyrics HIT. Especially if you're someone who struggles with ~Perfectionism~ ft repressed, rebellious anger like me.

my theory was about memory loss/dissociation tbh lol- i have dissociation from my trauma. i forget things constantly and my past feels fuzzy etc. so i took it as "lagtrain = lagging train of thought" basically forgetting about stuff and loosingyour memories and thoughts which is why she's "pocketting" them. also just how everyday feels the same and how stressful things are and idk lol just saying what my first thought was when i saw the lyrics. i found the song relatable and it feels personal and nostalgic in a way. i was diagnosed with a few things that might explain why the song feels personal to me such as depression ( been going on for years ), ptsd, dissociation, attachment issues, social anxiety and stuff ( only saying a few that feel relevant) but yeah i love the song because i find it feels like a part of my forgotten childhood sonehow

I've been lagging for a long time. Stuck in one place, waiting for a sign to go forward. Too cowardly to do it myself. Finding excuses not to do what I want to do or say what I need to say. Just, repeating what I've already done, over and over. Because it's predictable and safe. For me, this song is about being held back by anxiety. Convincing yourself not taking a risk (asking questions, starting projects,etc.) is the better option, despite all the great things you know it will bring and the fulfilment you desire. Beautiful song, it cuts deep.

it's a good song and I'm interested if you can figure out the meaning of the song-
My interpretation is her inner side conflicting whether she will move on or not. Mainly because of the contrasting colors in the MV, and her going left and right all the time. I believe that the left side=the white side means moving on, and the right side=the black side means not moving on. Although she is colored in black(not moving on), she is moving to the left side by the train, and by the scene on 11:05, the right side got hit by a rock(?) and this can be inferred that lagging behind will only make her hurt more. However, as the ending of the MV ends with moving to the right side, I believe she is trying her best to not move on.
This song really brings me down, but its so addicting. It just gives me this hopeless feeling that just sticks, but I can't stop listening.
It's about growing up, she found it easy to pretend to be happy as a kid but as she gets older and her days get filled with more and more things it gets harder to pretend to be happy and she reverts to how she acted as a child.
The distance of the train journey represents how long her days have become as she gets older and they get stuffed with more stuff and she longs to return to her "Local route" which is the easy routine she had in her childhood. The chicks represent her fear of growing up and her days becoming even more stressful, and the verse about school shows how society expects more from her as her age increases.
A grosser way to look at it is the "no entry" sign representing how she doesn't want to lose her virginity and would prefer to stay young and innocent.
It's kinda obvious when you read the lyrics and think about it.

The way I see it is that she tries to help people go ahead of her and she doesn't focus on herself on time, so when she tries to do it, it's already late to make a change, maybe because people have already betrayed her
The line "Because I want to entrust your everything to this swaying train car" and "The *evening* (symbolises that she might get a later train) train station is terribly crowded, I wanted it to take a break until I can have it all to myself) might represent how she lets everyone be ahead of her, and "I'll take a ride on the *local* train" can mean that when she does get the train (train=change), nothing really changes, because she's on the same city, also, the line "The traffic crossing is also saying "wait for me" might mean that she thinks that she must be behind of everyone, or the line that says "And fake my way through this ever-swaying day" might mean that she is not really making any progress in her life

People tend to think it's Kaai Yuki the vocal because of the similarity in appearance, but it's not the same person.

And the part where she sang about the station was too crowded and wished to have it all by herself. It's like she talks about going toward the end of her life ? Cuz "gettin' on the bus to the other world" is also about ending one's life.

This song remains me of "I wanna die" song, I'm not sure why.
In my opinion it's not that she purposefully wants to avoid the train. She wants to take the train, not just to meet people but to go to the faraway cities, her objectives and what she truly wants to achieve to be happy. But whether it's cause of her anxiety or just her incapability to keep going forward (depression maybe?) she just falls behind and is forced to take the local train, meaning she's stuck in a loop of just going back to the same near places. Plus she's just dragged by the school crowd, she doesn't have her own path and suffers because of it.
Also yeah, probably she suffers from anxiety and tends to isolate on those trains.

If you didn’t already you should check out some of his other songs because they all slap. I’m not sure if all their songs have a deeper meaning like this song besides probably lost umbrella and rainy boots but they’re nice to ascend to.
I know this video came out a long time ago but I want to make theories anyway.
My theory is that the trains represent the girl doing things in her everyday life. She says she doesn't want to do it and that she "fakes" something. I think the faking is just excuses to not talk to people because on the train, the girl is never sitting by someone. I think the girl is a loner with social anxiety. At the end of the song, the girl talks about this person. I think the person is a trusted friend who the girl takes a huge liking towards. As a result, the girl wants to leave everything they don't want to do and make the friend do it. In a line it says something like, "the train for farewells has already departed." I think it's supposed to represent the girl not saying goodbye to her friend who has left. I think the girl has social anxiety and doesn't want to talk to other people because she's scared she will experience losing someone again.

my personal theory on it is that she is contemplating suicide but is too scared to go through it. heres my thoughts while rewatching it with lyrics;
-the words that she lost could be hinting to a suicide note in her pocket, as it says later on "if i dont know the words i lost ill grasp them tight in my pockets"
-clearly seems to be unhappy with life and is just faking it though the day, trying to get through until she can end it
- "the traffic crossing is also saying wait for me, the street corner on patrol restrains you" this just feels to me like she wants to jump onto the tracks, or even that shes TRIED, but something stops her, whether it be herself or somebody else
-"it seems the train connecting far apart cities has already departed" i take the far apart cities to be a metaphor for life and death, and that line is saying she basically lost her chance at dying
-i feel like the lines about the train being crowded is her not wanting to end her life on front of other people, especially people she knows
-"the ticket machine is saying wait for me, my occupied hands are holding you back" again this could be her wanting to do it but someone or herself holding her back from doing so. with the last lines as well it feels like she ran into someone she knew at school near the ticket machine as she was about to commit
-"it seems this train to the city of faraway faraway farewells has already departed" city of faraway farewells??? again, a metaphor for death is how i perceive that
-not related to any lyrics in particular but i also suspect that she was dealing with being bullied and/or social anxiety, as well as depression
so with that all combined, my theory is that she went to the train to kill herself, but was stopped just as she was about to do so, by herself or somebody she knew. and that she's rode the train a lot, every time getting too scared to follow through with her plans.

To me, I think it's about not being able to fully say the words and connect with other people. You know like when you want to say something in a pressuring situation(usually social) but you can't seem to say anything even if you want to. Yeah like what was mentioned, being scared. So when you aren't able to say anything, people wait for you to say something but you just can't or only stutter. Everyone's just waiting for you to say or do something but eventually start to leave, even though you have a lot of really important things you want to say to them. Since you genuinely wanted to say something but end up feeling like you disappointed them by not saying anything, it's hard to just let it go and you're forced to keep these feelings inside and you probably have some idea of how this feels.

My interpretation on the signs is not how shes in a relationship but how she wishes she couldve said something couldve talked but she missed the chance to speak so when it says even the crosswalk is saying wait probably means how she wishes she could go back and do something such as speaking but instead she stood silent wishing she could go back and actually talk so she just grips her pockets waiting in a endless lag train of her lagging to speak to go back and say something. This would possibly lead her to even more loneliness thinking she couldve made a friend or even just gained confidence.

I believe it's her coming to the realization that taking the the "local train" because she missed the "express train"
The cities being her opportunities. The slow train representing the fact that things still keep going but a lot slower and the opportunity to appreciate your time?
In My Opinion, this song is about a girl who's depressed over a close one's death and may or may not have been bullied, with the words
*["Look, the traffic crossing is also saying “wait for me”]*
may mean cross into the afterlife and that she may be suicidal.
*[Again, a group returning from school pushes you along]*
might have meant that she may have been bullied which further pushes her into deppression
and *["The train Has already long departed"]*
may mean her emotions or will to live long gone as the girl is shown to be stoic along the video as for *["lag train"]*
may mean how she is suicidal but afraid of death and wants to keep on living but is starting to become boring and repetitive, like the movements in the video.
