If I remember correctly, newspapers started using soy ink many years ago. A the time it concerned me bc I'm allergic to soy even though I wasn't ingesting it. Their"smell" can be quite strong at times but I'm sensitive to any strong odor.
To be honest, I don’t know but I don’t really think it would be a problem. I have been making paper pots like this since I was growing up (and that was a long time ago 😉😂). I have also used newspaper under grass clippings for weed prevention and when I have built new beds. We have never had any issues that we know of from the newspaper ink. We don’t use sale papers, or papers with a lot of colored ink. Of course do your own research and do what you think is best for your family, but I don’t think there is a lot to worry about using newspapers, especially compared to buying seedlings that have undoubtedly been fertilized with synthetic fertilizer.
Cool 😎
Wouldn’t the ink in the newspaper seep into your roots? Just wondering.

Thanks for the tip about the tomato stems. I had no idea. Off to look at my stems.
