I was forced into early retirement at 60 in 2016. Lived off my savings for 2 years till I was 62 and then started my SS and small pension. Real estate was an important part of my investments(made the biggest gains and really didn't plan on it). When I was 41, I really started hammering my 401K plan at work. They would have a match, plus I would put all my bonuses into it and I put that money into a very safe investment which was good but bad but it turned out good because of 2009 market disaster. Plus we had a very good company stock purchase plan which I maxed out. I also maxed out my IRA every year(was getting 5.5% on 5 year certificates of deposit back in the early 2000s). I now I'm retired in the Philippines with my Filipina wife. We paid cash for our house here in Cebu City. Start early, diversify your investments, go slow, don't try to hit "homeruns" with everything you got when it comes to investing. Start planning early, go slow, diversify, live life, have a goal.
I retired at age 65; since I’m financially stable, my sister & daughter advised me to retire while I’m still strong enough to travel without a cane, walker or wheelchair. God bless us all.

My ‘awakening’ happened when my wife and I were visiting the British Museum in London 25 years ago. A tourist bus came and unloaded senior tourists, many of them on wheelchairs, to visit the museum. Right there and then, we decided not to wait till we are seniors to visit all the places on our bucket list.

What you said is true about enjoying life while you can, We immigrated in the U.S. since 2004 and while working hard in our job as nurses, we have been travelling with our little kids too, in fact we have visited Europe for 3 weeks and saw different countries,including Italy,Spain and France, we also have seen Canada,Mexico,Japan, been back to the Philippines 6 times already, and we hope to travel more. Also while doing this I have been I always mindful of our investments as well so we can retire comfortably someday. More power to you and for giving us some moral lessons that could be helpful for us as we navigate our life as well.

I'm glad I traveled to a few places before the pandemic Inspite of my older sister's thinking that there's no need to travel to have enjoyment in life. I started traveling in 2012 after my husband passed away and stopped, temporarily, I hope, in February 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. The places I have visited are the ones I truly wanted to visit, like The Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Cinque Terre in Italy, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Coron, Palawan. That visit in Palawan was an eye opener to the natural beauty of the Philippines that God blessed our country. So when corona becomes lethargic, Mindanao, the Visayas and the Mountain provinces here I come. I don't know where I picked up these passages but here they are: Life is a gift Live it Enjoy it Celebrate it and Fulfill it.

Community colleges are still affordable. Students should attend the first 2 years at a community college and then transfer to a STATE university for the last 2 years. State universities have affordable tuition for residents. Parents should be building up their retirement accounts and not paying for college tuition, students can take out loans if they really want to go to a private university or work for their tuition while in school. Paying for everything once kids turn 18 is not teaching them personal responsibility and independence.
Great advice! I can relate to many of what you’ve experienced.. I learned early on as well that it would have been very frustrating to look at the cost of education for our kids, save up for them while you build your nest egg and still find time to enjoy life.. and like you, learned the best way is to also increase your earning power. My kids graduated college which I helped pay for from my income from a job that took me to many places in the country and some parts of the world. While retiring in the Philippines is not in my plans, it’s nice to know it is an option if things change drastically in the States. Vlogger Grandpa when my children were in Junior High School I told them that they could attend any collage or university that they could afford to pay for. They were upset but they got various jobs and earned the money they needed. My daughter didn't own a car until her final year in college and when she graduated she only had eight thousand dollars of student loans, which she paid off in one year. My son went to a private university and graduated with about twelve thousand dollars of loans but he then went to So. Korea and taught English and had his loans paid off in two years.
Good job! You did them a favor by teaching them independence and personal responsibility early. As soon as kids turn 18, they are adults and they should be treated as such. I was independent at 18, did not like it then and was upset at my parents but I thank them now for letting me fly out of the nest at 18. They let me fly but still guided me until I was in full control of my life in my early 20s.

Hello My name is Michael and I am from Reno Nevada, just moved to the Philippines 1/1/2021, Came here but next day they closed it all off. I was in full lock-down for a fill 6 months due to my age of 75. Now restrictions have been lifted in Manila and I can now go into the Malls and shop. We are doing fine in Manila Philippines. Soon we will be Moving into a brand new condo in Ortigas any day now. i can now go outside with my children ages 15, 14, and 10. I am an American my wife is Filipina, I came here on a Balikbayan Visa.

You definitely have to go to Alaska as soon as possible, due to climate change, big chunks of glaciers are already melting away. When we were there 5 yrs. ago via Princess Cruise, we witnessed through our own eyes, big chunks of glaciers were washed away.

Did you ever run out of passport pages? In the old days, the State Department just gave you additional pages. Some years ago, they stopped that practice due to security concerns. These days you have to renew the passport earlier than the expiry date, if you run out of passport pages due to a lot of travel.

Sounds like you just got lucky. Your parents sent you to accounting school, and then you fled the country upon your graduation. You fortunately married a nurse who earned more than you did in the early years. You lived in a country that fortunately has a real social security system, along with other ways to save like 401k’s. You luckily lived in a country with easy access to the stock market. Retirement planning in the Philippines is practically nonexistent. Ask any Filipino professional how they planned for retirement, and you will be rewarded with a blank expression. I doubt you’ll meet anyone who has heard of the 4% rule.
What is that! 😆😆😆 No, I just did not get lucky. It was planned since my early age. I was still in College when I realize and knew that it will be difficult to make it in the Philippines (not impossible...but hard). Thus, my effort was to immigrate somewhere else as soon as I finished college. I applied in some five countries to be able to get out and opportunity presented itself in two countries (Canada and US). It took a lot of effort on my part at that early age.
Lucky with the frequent flyer miles. Here in Australia, they put an expiry in the miles forcing you to use or loose. Definitely, visit the Sunshine Coast if you're in Australia.
There are several ways of 'resetting' the expiry date. For example, AA miles expire 24 months from the last transaction or trip. If you have an AA-affiliated credit card, a purchase of $10 will add 10 miles to your account and will reset the expiry date of all your miles to a new 24 month expiration.

I think mistake number one would be thinking of retiring in the Philippines at this time. As badly as the government is treating its own citizens, I have great reservations, especially when the President says he is going to ignore any judiciary rulings from the courts. Additionally, an unelected body (the IATF) is now running the country and destroying it. It is so sad what they are doing there. So many businesses went permanently bankrupt or were forced to close. Crime is higher because of a lack of food because millions have lost their jobs, and no one in government cares how many people their own policies are killing, probably far more than the Covid Virus.

Your best bet is to find a private health insurance until you reach at the age of 65.
The income limit to qualify for ACA (Obamacare) is 48K. If your only source of income at retirement is Social Security, you will most likely qualify. Premiums vary by state and the type of coverage (HMO vs PPO, Bronze vs. Silver vs. Gold). You can check what is available in your are at Healthcare.gov website.

You fortunately married a nurse who earned more than you did in the early years. You lived in a country that fortunately has a real social security system, along with other ways to save like 401k’s. You luckily lived in a country with easy access to the stock market. Retirement planning in the Philippines is practically nonexistent. Ask any Filipino professional how they planned for retirement, and you will be rewarded with a blank expression. I doubt you’ll meet anyone who has heard of the 4% rule.
What is that! 😆😆😆 No, I just did not get lucky. It was planned since my early age. I was still in College when I realize and knew that it will be difficult to make it in the Philippines (not impossible...but hard). Thus, my effort was to immigrate somewhere else as soon as I finished college. I applied in some five countries to be able to get out and opportunity presented itself in two countries (Canada and US). It took a lot of effort on my part at that early age.

Some of mine had expiration while others don't. You have to manage which one to use first.
There are several ways of 'resetting' the expiry date. For example, AA miles expire 24 months from the last transaction or trip. If you have an AA-affiliated credit card, a purchase of $10 will add 10 miles to your account and will reset the expiry date of all your miles to a new 24 month expiration.

In my case, I came over to the USA at 17 y/o. I attended college here in tfw USA through scholarships and worked part-time! I started @ $2.90 per hour...yup! Minimum wage...finally completed my RN/BSN/MSN with 2-young kids!

I think mistake number one would be thinking of retiring in the Philippines at this time. As badly as the government is treating its own citizens, I have great reservations, especially when the President says he is going to ignore any judiciary rulings from the courts. Additionally, an unelected body (the IATF) is now running the country and destroying it. It is so sad what they are doing there. So many businesses went permanently bankrupt or were forced to close. Crime is higher because of a lack of food because millions have lost their jobs, and no one in government cares how many people their own policies are killing, probably far more than the Covid Virus.

When I was seven year my father got to save the money I had at that age, so when I got my first pay cheque my father got to save five percent of my pay cheque. when I was in my 40's, I had $200,000 Canadian Dollars saved up. Why save up money when it is easier when you are young?

None! I will "play as I go" until budget for the month/year is depleted. No sense budgeting at this age as long as emergency reserve is maintained. 😆😆😆

Your best bet is to find a private health insurance until you reach at the age of 65.
The income limit to qualify for ACA (Obamacare) is 48K. If your only source of income at retirement is Social Security, you will most likely qualify. Premiums vary by state and the type of coverage (HMO vs PPO, Bronze vs. Silver vs. Gold). You can check what is available in your are at Healthcare.gov website.
