This is how I visualize EVERYWHERE I go whenever it’s any certain holidays, weekends, or March Madness: supermarkets and shopping malls. All that makes me feel like I’m a witness and almost a victim to a violent and chaotic riot.
This is SVB on March 10, 2023.

"Give me back my money!!"
This part of the movie is so hilarious....a run on the bank caused by 2 children...mass confusion..Dick Van Dyke was so funny as the elderly bank CEO...I still laugh when I see this.
Hilarious, because yet I keep wondering who started that fight which caused the bank run? So much for a chain reaction!
Some people think that the police officer is blowing his whistle at the children to stop but he's actually summoning other police officers there to break up the riot and stop the bank run.
Jane and Michael getting out there gta style
Ah, the wonders of fractional reserve banking.
I feel sorry for Michael, Mary Poppins tells him to use his money to feed the birds while his father tells him to put it into the bank. Poor little boy must be so confused.
I always thought so too.
I think what was most confusing to Michael that his father was joining in the song.
@@aminsadeghpour1549 That's not it, Mr P-P-Potter.
Yeah and good job the other visitors of the bank supported his views and decided to join him of getting all there money back from the bank that was stealing it from them because banks are supposed to help us not wreck us right guys!
Right. Banks help us save our money, not steal from us. This was all just a misunderstanding. Michael was just trying to by bread crumbs for the birds. I mean really. I know George blames Mary Poppins for the children's behavior later, but if I were Michael, I'd just leave the money aside to deposit in the bank account and later feed the birds.
@@aminsadeghpour1549 That's not it, Mr P-P-Potter.
I remember when I first saw this movie with my family I was really confused. I did not understand why all the panic started.
now that I am older I understand this completely. the customers at the bank heard Michael yelling and thought the bank was trying to steal their money as well.
It wasn't stealing.
The people in the bank thought a run was taking place.
Banks never have the cash on hand to cover all deposits as the monies are out on loans. If the loans start defaulting the bank will not have enough cash on hand to cover withdrawals. When the word gets around (true or false) that a bank's loans are going into default, people head to a bank to get all their money out (hence the word run) before all the cash is withdrawn from the vaults and the bank potentially goes under. One of the reasons why banks had (and today still have) so much interior space to accommodate all the customers is because if people were seen lining up outside, it might be because of a potential run taking place.
Today banks in the developed world operate under the regulations established by national governments through deposit insurance bodies. Under these regulations a minimum amount of deposits must be held in the form of cash in the vaults. Also if an insured bank does fail, the depositors are protected to a certain amount.
In 1910, when this film took place, there were no such regulations or protections Banks had lower deposit ratios. In addition, bank runs and failures were more common, and with the lack of any insurance, a failure meant the loss of one's deposits.
When the other customers heard Michael Bank asking for his money, they would have thought the bank's loans were going into default. Their instant reaction would be to withdraw all their money before the bank ran out of cash. This of course, started the bank run, with the help of Mary Poppins's magic.

If Mr. Dawes Sr. had not been so impatient, Michael probably would have come around on his own.
Why did he need Michael's money so bad? It's not like it was much.
@@noorrougelewis6704 He didn't want the money, he wanted Michael to agree with his argument.
@noorrougelewis6704
It wasn't exactly a " need" for Michael's money when George brought the kids to the bank to open an account, and Michael wanted to feed the birds.
Dawes Sr felt that as the chairman of the bank it was his sworn responsibility to teach the boy of what better investments and opportunities that two Tuppence could make than a, and I quote " Fiddlestick" thing like feeding birds
3:12 - Random patron: *"GIMME MY MONEY BACK!! I WANT MY MONEY!!*
As if Michael yelling *"GIMME BACK MY MONEY!!* weren't enough!!
It's Mr Dawes' fault. Using physical aggression on Michael and forcing him to do something he does not want to do.
If you said that Mr Dawes is a dick, that would make sense considering he's played by Dick Van Dyke!
Then again, Michael's just a kid in 1910s England.
Blame society.

Michael’s clever. He sees the tall men blocking the door and then figures out how he and Jane can just slip unseen right under their long coattails to get out.

As a kid, I used to feel sad every time the run on the bank started. Not sure exactly why, but I guess it had to do with all of the panic with everybody running around, yelling and screaming. The hectic music also made things worse.
lol the boy would REALLY get interest on 2 cents.

@@francofan100 hate to see how much a whole dollar or a pound was worth back then lol. fuck inflation
@@francofan100There are somethings wrong. The bank continues giving someone their money. 2:13
@@blaindebeers7711Well I'd gotten mine. 2:17
@blaindebeers7711 inflation is a necessary function of all economies since the beginning of time. If the value of a currency was entirely stagnant and there was 0% inflation, it would be devastating to the economy. Consider this - your money is worth less now than it was 90 years ago, but you also have far more of it than the overwhelming majority of people 90 years ago.
Inflation doesn't make intuitive sense to people who don't study or understand economics, but I cannot stress enough how vital it is to all economies.
It’s amazing how fast an economy can collapse!
Film bellissimo, sa essere un significato profondo
Just funny that these two children in this scene cause a complete market crash and instead of those bank employees freaking out about that they remained concerned getting a couple bucks from little kids lol. Crazy town.
I don’t know much about Britain economic history but this scene reminds me of the USA economic crash in 1929. It all started because one person couldn’t get their money out of the bank and it caused a total panic responsible for the worst economic crash in US history.
I thought the crash occurred because stock market prices were falling drastically cause people were in a hurry to sell their stocks before they would plummet in value
Mate the 1929 crash was a stock market crash not because someone couldn't get their money from the bank
Mary Poppins was right, Michael is extremely stubborn and suspicious!
Yeah but to be fair most of us would have reacted the exact same way had we been that age in that situation
Julie Andrews plays the elderly banker. Amazing. How did she not win the Oscar
That was Dick Van Dyke
@@joewhitehead3Michael. Give me my money. 2:48
How did it spread to people outside the bank was Michael scream really that loud.
2:28 Word travels quite fast doesn't it?
The bank staff and Mr. Banks were too focused on trying to force them to deposit their money. They could have tried to compromise. Some in the bank, some for using to feed the birds. It's one of those things where you need to find balance. Otherwise, you can either become stingy or wasteful.

Wow, that was the Good Ole Days when the Banks paid You to deposit your $$$.
Now they charge You to have an account!
Over some dang tuppence they lost all that money 😂
You know, Michael, if you invested your money in a bank, you could earn a lot of money and STILL have enough to feed the birds. (Doesn't excuse Dawes' behavior though.)
That's true, his tuppence would have accumulated into a fortune over the years, thus giving him more than enough money to feed every bird in the world.
Actually film theory proved that he would have been better off spending the money for paper string like in Go Fly A Kite

I kind of misheard what he was saying when I was a kid.
George ha fatto bene a dare una bella lezione a michael e a jane e così che ci fa con i figli e per i loro bene.
Funny how Mr Dawes Senior is much older than Michael, but the actor who plays him is still alive and the actor who plays Michael is dead.
Yeah hysterical 😒🙄
Dick Van Dyke still goes to the gym at the age of 96
Wow! No wonder he still has energy, it's like he'll live for another decade almost. I'll be very sad when he and Julie Andrews die though.😭

Mr. Dawes Junior later said this was the first run on the bank since 1773 when a loan financing a shipment of tea to the American colonies was defaulted.

@@jacobmassey3897 In December 1990 I was 18 and we were entering a recession. The place where I was working was still open and one day the manager came in from his break, having gone shopping at the local mall. He said everyone was paying in plastic. That part really jolted me as to why people would be paying with money they did not have in a time when they should have been cutting back.
Why did Michael open his hand if he was gonna go bezerk when they took his money?
He was leaning towards investing with the bank, but then Dawes had to be impatient and grab the money right out of his hand instead of letting him make his own decision, which rightfully enraged Michael.
