Very thorough and clear. I have been a mechanic all my life, but it was still a pleasure to watch. I'm sure if someone had never done anything like that before, your video would have ensured success.
Why I was nervous as if this is my bike, I even do not have a bike (although RE is my dream) Great instructional video, very professionally made, little helper was happily trotting around 😊
A first class demo. I would just add , it's always a good idea to put a little copper grease on the spark plug thread. The coating on the plug can react with the aluminium of the cylinder. It's rare, but its a big problem if it happens.
Only a moron would put copper or any type of grease on spark plug threads . Screw them in hand tight & then nip them up a third of a turn ,or torque to manufacturers specs .
As a meteor owner without much mechanical experience, it's great to see such quality maintenance video's. Do you also plan on covering the 3000 mile check on the meteor?
Great job, do like the simplicity of this engine, looks easy to work on compared to many new bikes, reminds me of my DT175 that I would do all my own servicing on.
This is a great tutorial, Nick. Followed it to do my Hunter service (slightly different beneath the tank but essentially the same). Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to do this. 👍
For anyone following this for newer models of the meteor 350 - RE seems to have removed the "T" and arrow to indicate top dead center. My 2023 meteor fireball doesn't have it. Sticking a screwdriver into the spark plug while and cracking the engine by hand worked well enough, but RE makes a tool to lock the cam at top dead center that you can maybe get on eBay
Hi Nick. Just a few observations from me following your video to adjust the valve gear on my Classic 350. I found it virtually impossible to accurately reseat the cover back on the gasket with the gasket in situ. I removed the rear electrical connections that impede removal and replacement of the rocker cover. I also removed the little finned piece on the near side just beneath the rocker cover. I removed the old gasket completely with the D section rubber piece covered by the small finned piece. I then fitted the gasket into the rocker cover groove and reassembled the two together. Without those 2 electrical connections in the way it slid back on easily without any wrestling! I am not knocking your video, it was excellent. I am just noting for other's benefit that I found it necessary to take a slightly different approach.
Good over view. Do all my own servicing. My 350 clasdic had a tight exhaust . The whole point of these single potters is ease of maintenance and repair.
Excellent video/guide! Thank you very much! Based on this I made the oil change myself last weekend. Next I'll try to the valve adjustment as well but I have to order some tools first (14mm hex bit, long 16 mm socket for plug removal and obviously the feeler gauge).
great video!!!! thanks for sharing......one little thing, if your timing mark is on the crank you are correct to check for the compression stroke, however if the timing mark is on the cam shaft that will be the only observed timing position. Again great video thanks for taking the time to put it together!

Help, I hope you read this message. Follow the steps in the video. Now it sounds like a clack XD, I understand that it would be due to poor valve adjustment, which is why I have two questions. 1. How much should I tighten the nut? Should it be very tight or slightly tight? 2. How much should I adjust the valve? Should the valve gauge have some resistance or should it pass freely between the valves? I hope you can help me so I can correct the calibration I did because I adjusted the valve nut a lot and I think I must have opened the valve a little because when I passed the calibrator there was no resistance. Greetings
Very helpful and informative indeed, Thanks very much for your excellent video 👍 I'm soon to be buying a Royal Enfield Hunter 350 And I'm sure this video will be of great help to me, Cheers Paul Foster 👌
Thanks Nick, for this excellent clear and complete video. Understand that hex bits and Allen key are the same? Interested to hear why fully synthetic oil is better than semi-synthetic? First video for this job, that mentions checking the spark plug gap - thanks! Love that Meteor's colour, but I have to say I prefer my Halcyon Grey Classic Reborn ,-) The dealer said that checking the tappets "wasn't necessary!
@@nicksepisode unfortunately it seems many RE dealers don't do it to avoid cheesing off owners with a hefty bill for the first service (which I believe is free in India). I wrote to RE and they replied very quickly, and were concerned that their Official dealer wasn't following the service manual. I think I will do it myself. Many thanks again.
I followed your videos instructions and although it was a bit of a pig to do, I did the adjustments (inlet was very tight). Now (of course haha) it seems to be noisier "clickety clickety" than before. Stupidly I didn't record the engine noise before. Some posts on forums suggest that with the clearances being tight from the factory, the engines are quieter, and once set to 0,08/0,18 then the tappets are louder? Would very much appreciate your comments / suggestions. I will do the job again and check once more (I didn't turn the engine and recheck as you suggested) So that could mean improper settings (i.e. what a plonker). Many thanks!
Great video, I made the mistake of tightening the engine cover bolts too tight and snapped one, thank god I was able to get it out and order a new one…. Watched another video which says to tighten them hand tight, and then give an quarter turn…anyway you can comment on this with your opinion on tightening those bolts
@@nicksepisode thank you, also did you notice the tappets sounding more noisy after the service? My bike runs so much better after the service but I had a guy tell me the tapping noise is not good and I might have adjusted them too loose, but he doesn’t even own a royal enfield😞 I’m hoping it’s just the way the bike is supposed to sound
@airborne15545 the noise should be the same as before. Take your feeler gauge to your mechanic and show them the specs to make sure you have used the correct gauges. The numbers can get confusing on them
They made that difficult. Oh well. Let's hope my first service on my new Meteor gets done properly.. I wonder though, if I should check the valves myself anyway...?
Just a quick one, won't using fully synthetic oil increase the running in mileage due to the reduced friction of the synthetic oil 🤔 I'd have thought sticking with the semi synthetic till at least 1200 miles and then switch would be better.
Great video instruction! Substantive, with great shots and commentary. Please describe what the warranty period for your machine was like when you did not show up for scheduled inspections? (I'm guessing you did all the work yourself) I'm planning to buy a classic and I don't want to raise the operating costs by taking the motorcycle to a service center so that someone can do simple maintenance work for me... Thank you and greetings from Poland. Jack
warranty lasted 3 years, i performed this after the first 2 months, its a grey area with warranty being void, but RE are very lenient when it comes to owners servicing their own bikes, so if you have proof of service and used genuine parts you should be ok
Nice work. Surprised you didn't check, and then clean the oil screen. Not uncommon to find metal bits after run in. Looking forward to next post. Cheers.
Hi Just a quick Info update, I have a 350 classic, just approaching the first Service, RE have confirmed to me that the tappets dont need adjustment at the first service They do however require it at the second service Regards MikeN
Great video, I'll be following all your instructionals for my Meteor. And I think you all covered Interceptor and NC750, both of which are shortlisted for my next bike. No need to change the crush washer on the plug? On my ratty past bikes I admit to reusing them if they still looked in shape and I couldn't find my replacement ones at the time, seemed not to leak from there afterwards (they had other worse leaks anyway!)
Hi, I should've seen your video first on how to adjust valves! Done mine yesterday and they were both tighter than spec, now I seam to hear the valves clicking more! How can you unmistakably know you're on the compression stroke TDC? Would it be possible to loosen the exhaust valve while on the exhaust stroke TDC? I used locking tool and could easily loosen and adjust both valves... Also for oil grade, my RE dealer sold me full synthetic 20W50 oil for my first oil change.. because of city heat.. I'm in Canada, not LA! Many thanks!
oh no, I purposely added the part about a possible 2nd rotation may be required as ive seen a few videos not talk about this. good you got it sorted in the end
Great video! I followed this and everything went smooth. However, on crank shaft cap and oil filter cap I’m getting oil misting (not really a leak). I used torque wrench on them. Any ideas on why this is happenening? Thanks for doing video. My dealer wanted $750 for this.
Good video, can't fault what you've done. Call me old-fashioned but what a faff to set the tappets! All the stuff you have to remove to gain access for a routine job would drive me round the bend. As an old (OK, very old) Triumph man, I was used to just unscrewing one little cover per valve to do the same job. Are all the new RE engines designed like this? What about the Interceptor?
Don't care for all the work adjusting tappets, buy yourself a Moto Guzzi Easy peasy.. two wrenches, a screwdriver and a set of feeler gages did I mention the chain maintenance? Shaft drive so no chain bother,
What document shows the tappets' gaps? I dont see that in my USA maintenance manual. FWIW, I just did mine thanks to this video and zoomed into the screenshot of your manual to double check. Exhaust was hadn't move in 300mi, the intake was a wee tight.
Thanks for the video Nick! Could you point me to the torque wrench that you've been using? I'm pretty new to the mechanic world, and I'm excited to being my journey as a mechanic!!
I'm coming back to your video - it's really great. If I may, I will also ask about the adjustment screws. Do they have square heads in addition to the screwdriver cutout? I can't see it in the recording - thank you and best regards.
Just a question… what is the product you use for parts cleaning and in what kind of container you put that product in so you can then pray the cleaning product. Thank you
Let me start by saying thank you to aa great video, just one quick question ....what tool are you using to turn the crank?? and where can I purchase such tool?
Yeah I agree. However my bonding was still attached to the head so I left it. You’re right though, the way it’s supposed to be done is installed on the cover first, with a dab of sealant to hold it in place.
Amazing and such a detailed video!! It appears that you have been servicing you bike all by yourself. Have you found and issues with respect to quality, or anything else that needs to be highlighted. Actually, I am thinking of buy one for myself.
Yes it was quite tricky. Time and patience is key. Along as its all even and the 3 cover bolts screw in hand tight before you nip them up then you'll be fine
How did you get a service manual? Can't seem to get my hands on one here in the U.S. Thanks so much for this! I bought a Stellar Blue Meteor last year & have been loving it but there are no RE dealers less than 3 hrs away so I'm learning to DYI.
Hi Nick! Great video! Can you please clarify one point which would make things a lot easier for people undertaking this service - as this does not appear to be covered on UA-cam or anywhere else? As the petrol tank has a fuel pump; when you disconnect the fuel supply pipe from the petrol tank to the injector, will only a small amount of residual petrol drain out of the tank (because the pump is not pumping) or will it free flow all over the place? Thanks. John.
@@nicksepisode Hi Nick! That's great - thanks again! Top video & tutorial by the way - can't wait to get started knowing now that I'll not be covering my feet in petrol (LOL)!
Doubt, Does really required to change gasket & sealants in further services even if it is good condition ? Because, we dont change frequently for other bikes and cars until it damages or weak, RE comes with service kit with sealent and gaskets.
Excellent video. Question: Does the engine noise increase when the engine is warmed up? Is this normal on the 350? Only have 2,000 km on mine and I'm concerned. Basically sounds like a piston slap or a leaking exhaust manifold. Nice and quiet when engine is cold.
I would hope with a multigrade oil that it actually reaches 50 viscosity rating when warmed up. It shouldn't get thinner, IMO. The oil just generally flows more easily when warm. Having said that the video is excellent and I am about to get my own bike soon so extremely useful.@@MagicRoosterBluesBand
Royal Enfield just send notice to their dealers that the 300 mile valve adjustment is no longer required. Did yours require much adjustment at that miles?
I’m hoping your source of information is correct as all instances on my scram, meteor, interceptor and my wife’s himmy required adjustments after 300 miles. The only way this would have changed is that Royal Enfield have improved the production line quality control process ( which is probable) Id request this “ update bulletin” in an email from your dealership to cover any future issues should you get any. If you are confident with spanner’s then check it yourself, better be safe than sorry. After all it cannot do any harm and it’ll give you peace of mind Failing that get a second opinion from a completely different dealership, you can also email royal Enfield direct with your vin number and they can check for you Hope this helps

On my side in Brittany, i use 10W40 for the same reasons.
I agree with your choice, especially since the fully synthetic oil can provide the wider viscosity range.

Very thorough and clear. I have been a mechanic all my life, but it was still a pleasure to watch.
I'm sure if someone had never done anything like that before, your video would have ensured success.
Thanks Tim
what an exquisite service and even better video. bravo !!
Thank you very much!
Why I was nervous as if this is my bike, I even do not have a bike (although RE is my dream)
Great instructional video, very professionally made, little helper was happily trotting around 😊
Yes she's part of the healthy and system team bless her
A first class demo.
Oh yes most definitely
Great job, do like the simplicity of this engine, looks easy to work on compared to many new bikes, reminds me of my DT175 that I would do all my own servicing on.
most definitely !
I had a 68 DT-250.
Valve adjustment was quite easy if I remember.
Hi Nick you are brilliant… I think I could do my own service after watching that.. thank you
You’re welcome
This is a great tutorial, Nick. Followed it to do my Hunter service (slightly different beneath the tank but essentially the same). Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to do this. 👍
Fantastic
For anyone following this for newer models of the meteor 350 - RE seems to have removed the "T" and arrow to indicate top dead center. My 2023 meteor fireball doesn't have it. Sticking a screwdriver into the spark plug while and cracking the engine by hand worked well enough, but RE makes a tool to lock the cam at top dead center that you can maybe get on eBay
@@ryanheisler9648 cheers for the info
Hi do you know the torque setting for the 17mm drain bolt?
Thanks for your input :)
Good over view.
Do all my own servicing.
My 350 clasdic had a tight exhaust .
The whole point of these single potters is ease of maintenance and repair.
Absolutely 💯
That was superb. Easy to follow 👌
Excellent video/guide! Thank you very much! Based on this I made the oil change myself last weekend.
Next I'll try to the valve adjustment as well but I have to order some tools first (14mm hex bit, long 16 mm socket for plug removal and obviously the feeler gauge).
Well done Mr White
@@nicksepisode "You're god damn right!"
great video!!!! thanks for sharing......one little thing, if your timing mark is on the crank you are correct to check for the compression stroke, however if the timing mark is on the cam shaft that will be the only observed timing position. Again great video thanks for taking the time to put it together!
Good tip!
On 6:14 we can see the correct, as it is on the manual on fig.5.8.105, the gasket is on the cylinder head cover!!
this will save you using instant gasket as its used on the head, do as you wish
Great informative video Nick & well presented are add this to my DIY library on how to do things as I intend to do many things myself Once again thanks! PS I hope Jodie made you a nice cup of tea lol👍🏻
she treated me too lunch :)
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance comes to mind. Excellent video, very clear and professional, but I won't try this at home 🙂
Thank you 😊
What a very clear video, helps us all, thanks
Cheers Dave
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks Nick, I've got a CB125F and follow your site, soon to buy a Meteor.
Awesome David
Excelente explicación tengo una meteor mismo color con apenas 800 km para mi gusto un andar suave y velocidad justa para este tipo de motos ya con 62 años , saludos desde Argentina hasta cualquier momento lo mejor para ustedes.
Muchas gracias. Viaja seguro amigo
Another very informative video👍 great work👌🏍
Thanks! 👍
Really useful well made video, you got the tone, tempo and information spot on. Thanks.
Thank you 😊
Help, I hope you read this message.
Greetings
Adjust the valve to what the feel gauge says in the video. I’d recommend taking this to a mechanic and get it checked.
Very helpful and informative indeed,
Thanks very much for your excellent video 👍
I'm soon to be buying a Royal Enfield Hunter 350
And I'm sure this video will be of great help to me,
Cheers

Glad it was helpful!
Very clear and concise video. You are doing yeoman's work sir.🙂
Thanks a ton
Great video and clear explanation. Nick.. Waiting for your upcoming services videos..
And plan throttle body clean. !
Thanks Nick, for this excellent clear and complete video. Understand that hex bits and Allen key are the same?
Interested to hear why fully synthetic oil is better than semi-synthetic?
First video for this job, that mentions checking the spark plug gap - thanks!
Love that Meteor's colour, but I have to say I prefer my Halcyon Grey Classic Reborn ,-)
The dealer said that checking the tappets "wasn't necessary!
love the Halcyon Grey!! semi synth is good too dont think ones better than the other, this engine dont rev much, you'd be fine either way
tappets are 100 percent necessary at first service, do not skip this, only a non RE dealer would say this.
Watched another video which says to tighten them hand tight, and then give an quarter turn…anyway you can comment on this with your opinion on tightening those bolts
once they come to a stop with hand, turn 1/4 of a turn
@@nicksepisode thank you, also did you notice the tappets sounding more noisy after the service? My bike runs so much better after the service but I had a guy tell me the tapping noise is not good and I might have adjusted them too loose, but he doesn’t even own a royal enfield😞 I’m hoping it’s just the way the bike is supposed to sound
@airborne15545 the noise should be the same as before. Take your feeler gauge to your mechanic and show them the specs to make sure you have used the correct gauges. The numbers can get confusing on them
Could you point to a repair book with dedicated Nm values? I see you use it in the video. Thank you.
Go onto Google and search "classic 350 workshop manual" you'll find a link on a forum
They made that difficult. Oh well. Let's hope my first service on my new Meteor gets done properly.. I wonder though, if I should check the valves myself anyway...?
If you are a fan hand with the tools than why not give it a go
That looks so easy! After doing a valve service on my Suzuki C50, this is borderline pornographic to watch. I WANT A CLASSIC 350 SO BAD!
Love it!
Just a quick one, won't using fully synthetic oil increase the running in mileage due to the reduced friction of the synthetic oil 🤔 I'd have thought sticking with the semi synthetic till at least 1200 miles and then switch would be better.
Oil will be changed at 1k anyway I don't belive 300 miles is enough really.
Thankyou so much for this great video. You make it seem easy for us . Thanks again . Waiting for next videos. 👍👍
You're welcome
Unfortunately - checked with a local seller. Any unauthorized intervention will deactivate the warranty...
Nice work. Surprised you didn't check, and then clean the oil screen. Not uncommon to find metal bits after run in. Looking forward to next post. Cheers.
Hi
Just a quick Info update, I have a 350 classic, just approaching the first
Service,
RE have confirmed to me that the tappets dont need adjustment at the first service
They do however require it at the second service
Regards
MikeN
Mine needed adjustment, but won’t harm to leave it until the 2nd service as that’s more cost effective if you’re paying a dealer to do it.
@@nicksepisode No problem, mine is not going back to the dealers for servicing.
This video was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the follow. Sometimes u can get away with re hosing the crush washer. No jarm in getting prepared, though (unlike me)
Hi, I should've seen your video first on how to adjust valves!
My dealer wanted $750 for this.
good job, put some grease around the seal before install
Good video, can't fault what you've done. Call me old-fashioned but what a faff to set the tappets! All the stuff you have to remove to gain access for a routine job would drive me round the bend. As an old (OK, very old) Triumph man, I was used to just unscrewing one little cover per valve to do the same job. Are all the new RE engines designed like this? What about the Interceptor?
ua-cam.com/video/3Y-HbacVhf0/v-deo.html Interceptor service by Nick
the interceptor is a tad easier, (i have a video on this) although this design RE are using are much better to work on than say a modern triumph.
Agreed - only thing I don't like about my new Royal Enfield Classic 350
Seems stupid in 2022, but it is what it is!
Don't care for all the work adjusting tappets, buy yourself a Moto Guzzi Easy peasy.. two wrenches, a screwdriver and a set of feeler gages did I mention the chain maintenance? Shaft drive so no chain bother,
Get a Harley with oil filled lifters requiring no adjustment whatsoever.@@fredsmith1774
Outstanding video! Very clear and concise.
Glad it was helpful!
Aaw, and I was hoping Jodie would do the service herself. That bike is so easy to work on, that she easily can do it for the next service-video.
Perhaps next time, good idea
What document shows the tappets' gaps? I dont see that in my USA maintenance manual. FWIW, I just did mine thanks to this video and zoomed into the screenshot of your manual to double check. Exhaust was hadn't move in 300mi, the intake was a wee tight.
Good job... tight inlet caused painful cold starts?
@ANIK5261 it won’t help
9:58 when you say 'i'm not changing the oil' you meant the o'ring right?
Absolutely
I set up the torque wrench to nip it up.
Good job 👏
Thanks for this. Great camera work, Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the video Nick! Could you point me to the torque wrench that you've been using? I'm pretty new to the mechanic world, and I'm excited to being my journey as a mechanic!!

Hi , I was wondering which valve is the intake, the front one or the back one facing rear wheel? Thanks again
The one facing the rear wheel is the intake
I'm coming back to your video - it's really great. If I may, I will also ask about the adjustment screws. Do they have square heads in addition to the screwdriver cutout? I can't see it in the recording - thank you and best regards.
Yes they do bud
Thank you.
Bravissimo, semplicemente perfetto
Fine, step-by-step instructions.👌🏽At the 10 minute mark of the video you said that you weren't changing the oil, but didn't you change the oil?
I meant to say O rings. Slip of the tounge. Well spotted, though
@njepisodes Thanks very much for the clarification.😊
I thought that I was misunderstanding some "biker" terminology.✌🏾
Thanks for this precious video ! 👍
You're welcome 😊
Make a video on scram 411 tappept setting
Already have
Bravo sir! Excellent content.
Thank you 😊
Thank you for this excellent video. Can you tell me where or how to get the ‘workshop’ manual you used from please?
I searched for it on Google. Think it was on a Royal Enfield owners forum.
Thank you 👍
You can also call RE and they will email you the full manual. It's something like 1300 pages! I'm not joking...
Ride Safe 🙏🏼
Just a question… what is the product you use for parts cleaning and in what kind of container you put that product in so you can then pray the cleaning product. Thank you
Its brake and clutch cleaner. The container is a pump action pressurised bottle from "wurth"
Great video! Thanks. Total newb here. Can you also post links to the tools? Did they come in a kit or did you pick them up individually?
I purchased them individually
Let me start by saying thank you to aa great video, just one quick question ....what tool are you using to turn the crank?? and where can I purchase such tool?
It's just a T bar. You can get them at most tool shops
With this J engine it’s easier to re fit the valve cover with gasket installed to the cover instead of leaving it on the head,
Yeah I agree. However my bonding was still attached to the head so I left it. You’re right though, the way it’s supposed to be done is installed on the cover first, with a dab of sealant to hold it in place.
Excellent video. Presumably you have access to the RE workshop manual but `I don't think this is freely available is it?
It's available online on the Royal enfield forums.
Thank you very much for this mate, much appreciated 👍🏻
Glad it helped
Excellent. Thank you😃
You are welcome!
How big is that copper washer on the sump drain bolt? Would you recommend replacing it every oil change? Cheers
I don't know the size, sorry. I would change it every two services
In India the service centers of RE changes the casket of engine head every time when it's opened, did you changed it?
nope, depends if you take care
Could you do a video like this on the supper meteor?
I have one on the interceptor, the engine is the same.
Amazing and such a detailed video!!
It appears that you have been servicing you bike all by yourself. Have you found and issues with respect to quality, or anything else that needs to be highlighted.
Actually, I am thinking of buy one for myself.
Thank you. No issues, they're great !
A very informative and useful video. Did you have any issues with locating your rocker gasket as Im told they can be a real pain to align?
Yes it was quite tricky. Time and patience is key. Along as its all even and the 3 cover bolts screw in hand tight before you nip them up then you'll be fine
How did you get a service manual? Can't seem to get my hands on one here in the U.S.
Thanks so much for this! I bought a Stellar Blue Meteor last year & have been loving it but there are no RE dealers less than 3 hrs away so I'm learning to DYI.
On the Facebook page, my friend
Thank you! Very helpful!

Thanks. John.
hi, it will bot free flow, sorry i should have added that
@@nicksepisode Hi Nick - is that a 'No' it will not free flow? Thanks mate!
@johnmcgill5742 it won't free flow bud. You can remove pipe even with full tank

Keep using until it weaps
Excellent video. Question: Does the engine noise increase when the engine is warmed up? Is this normal on the 350? Only have 2,000 km on mine and I'm concerned. Basically sounds like a piston slap or a leaking exhaust manifold. Nice and quiet when engine is cold.
yes the oil gets thinner and noise will increase when warm
@@nicksepisode thanks!
Thinner is a better word to help visualise what's happening
Royal Enfield just send notice to their dealers that the 300 mile valve adjustment is no longer required. Did yours require much adjustment at that miles?
I’m hoping your source of information is correct as all instances on my scram, meteor, interceptor and my wife’s himmy required adjustments after 300 miles.
The only way this would have changed is that Royal Enfield have improved the production line quality control process ( which is probable)
Id request this “ update bulletin” in an email from your dealership to cover any future issues should you get any.
If you are confident with spanner’s then check it yourself, better be safe than sorry. After all it cannot do any harm and it’ll give you peace of mind
Failing that get a second opinion from a completely different dealership, you can also email royal Enfield direct with your vin number and they can check for you
Hope this helps
