Video brought back memories for my self, I started with Operator engineering local #3 in August of 1966, just farm kid , my first pieces Equipment was D6c dozer, then ran motor grader for couple years then my first backhoe was case 580, then John Deere 500c , it seems never to brake down. Now I have over 50 plus years in Local #3 Engineering.
Good to hear from a union Brother local 4 Boston enjoying my retirement it’s like you are in the cab running the machine l love the video when he talks about the labor he is spot on 1 more bucket is when you get in the shit
2nd generation operating engineer, local 12 sill an apprentice so when I find videos like this they always catch my eye, right now I’m running a D6 dozer
Solid operating brother. I'm really enjoying your videos. I love the back and forth with your laborer. That is one of the best relationships in this industry. Keep up the good content!
Thanks! Will do!
Mainlining in the road is where you find the real diggers, anyone can dig on a plat. I love digging in the road and seeing all the pissed off ppl drive by.
Some UK roads have empty ducts fitted with a pull-cord for possible future use, so that the road does not have to be dug-up for a crossing. The duct ends behind either curb, marked by a foot-cube concrete cube with 'D' moulded into it.

F****** Make up your god damn mind….
You talking to your self?
Sometimes🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣. Pure gold
Great video. Definitely shows that civil operators are the most skilled. Easy to get frustrated with your pipe layers when they are telling you to dig wrong.
Well said!
👊💯💪AS A PIPELAYER ME & MY OPERATOR CAN 2 STEP ALL DAY LONG WITH NO MISHAPS, BATMAN & ROBIN, I TRUST HIM💪💯👊
You have to trust your spotter or no one goes home. Awsome job.
Dig the top off and make some relief. Everything looks differently when in the cab vs. the side of the ditch. I think the pad man should have time in the excavator to show them what it is like in the seat. Good job to you and Andy.
Totally agree
been saying this for 19years - operators make the best underground laborers
Keep on digging...I make $$$ hauling buckets! Watching you work is very mesmerizing. I didn't think I'd watch the whole video...was surprised when it seemed to end so soon.
Wow, thanks!
Just started watching this channel, looks like an amazing job with cool people, I work for a excavation company and this month where working on a steep hill replacing drain pipe for a mine blow out and reclaiming a slide near it. I was in a Deere 200Lc, and the guy who was holding me on top the hill while I fix the slide was in a D6XL.
Very cool!
Absolutely love this man!! Can’t wait till I get back in the seat!! You make it easy over this time that I can’t be! Keep up this videos! Gotta say they help others out there man!
Appreciate it!!
Nice job!! interaction with the crew and the challenges of the utilities is what I miss the most!
More to come! make sure you suscribe
Hey buddy. Just found you here. Love this. I love watching other people dig. I dig gas mostly. Have done water and steam also. I love running excavator.
doesn't matter what goes in the ditch it is all the same.
Just found this channel.. you just found yourself a new subscriber this channel is Rockin
Same
I always worked with a blade hand, definitely makes your job and his much easier when you get along and work well together, not too mention caring about your job
Loving what you do is a big part of success.
you got yourself a new subscriber. Operator and ground man must be as 1 when crossing utilities.
Thanks for the Sub.
We here in Aus always have a vac truck at the ready on site even while digging with the excavator vac and digger go hand in hand
Not an option for us wigs it was.
Working for a public works we deal with crossing every day also. Great job.
Thanks 👍
I worked for Preston before at Stanford and Facebook. It was a different ball game. I’m use to getting 1,200 days.. my foreman wouldn’t let me dig more then 6” down 4’ pull… awesome video man.
Thanks for the support
Seems crazy to be using such aggressive teeth in that kind of ground
it is what we had
Fascinating to watch, thanks for narrating what is going on!
Glad you enjoyed it
Up here in Alberta they bring in a hydro vac truck to expose gas lines utility lines
We do that as well, but only for the potholing prior to digging.
New subscriber from belgium! Why do you use a bucket with teeth when digging around utilities? Greetz
Some times I don't have any other option.
I was a line locator for 5 years, gas, electric, phone, catv. One of the most hectic damage investigations ive ever seen was a 3 phase primary burried in white PVC conduit. A plumber was looking for the service line between the buisness and Main, he thought that white PVC was the sewer, took a hacksaw and sawed right into the primary. It melted the saw and the plumber was ok, guess the plastic handle is what saved him. The electric company showed up on scene and told the plumber that he should take a trip to vegas because he was the luckiest basterd they had seen.
What i would like to know is who the stupid SOB that pushed a primary leading to a pad mount transformer in white plumbing PVC pipe and not grey.
That's why you never assume anything, they used what they had i guess. They could have mark the white pvc also
RON KALI yep and they electric company could have laid some buried caution tape a few feet above that line when they trenched it in years ago. But the plumbing contractor also started digging before the locaters had a chance to come paint and flag, if they were in such a hurry they could have called in a short notice or emergency locate request.
Yo bro, it's a very good training video!...I lke how u give insight and direction!...
Thank you 🙏
Nice job by the way I wonder only one thing why you guys love those tiger teeth so much I see them on everything in a place where there’s no stones and no frost you should try those same teeth called a bunch of things duckbill teeth the flat ones that almost touch each other your labors would love you and it’s way easier to dig around Utilities I dug all kinds of different soils with them even blasted rock seem not to slow the machines down just an opinion but Maybe I’m missing something
You may see them on a bucket that came from a stone jobsite we don't change teeth just because we want to. We have to where them out before they get new ones. I get tiger teeth any time I am on a rock job.
Would that line have been for future use? The rope is to pull new wires. I guess it doesn’t matter now haha! 450 with killer teeth that’s tricky work. Cool video!
The line was unmarked, so we were not looking for it. But yea the teeth I call my pipe feelers. We did replace the pipe after the pipe crew went past it.
Cat 101 I found sometime it easier to switch to narrow bucket, this way it doesn't create pressure on the outer edge of trench where pipe is.
I will have to remember that.
We would never be allowed to dig round cables etc with a tooth bucket here in scotland uk👍😁 fair play mate
I get to do things other operators don't.
Great video and great job , congratulations !!! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
You are so lucky to have a guy for five years doing a job for you this day and age almost impossible the companies will never pay them what they’re worth and they always get disgruntled and MoveOn but most people don’t understand is the operator only needs to be so good doesn’t have to be a all-star but if the spotter is first rate everything goes great no matter what Operator
Wish I woulda found your channel when I worked for Preston too 😂
That stuff is almost as much fun to dig as the blue mertin north of the river...
This is much easer.
if i could give you 4 thumbs up i would but i only go two thumbs so i give you two thumbs up lol. Great video as always. You and Andy makes a perfect working partners. Its always fun when you can joke around with your co-workers. Makes the day day by much faster. Nice job
Much appreciated!
Why would a conduit with a pull rope in it be cut off in the trench. Wouldn't the pull rope be a sign that is was placed for future expansion?
Yes and we did replace it later.
Some very very careful digging there 😦😦
I work with a smooth edge all I can. With that many things to cross, huge machine, shorter bucket would be awesome. Yea, gound guy needs to be in tune. I thankfully live out in the countryside and avoid most of the utility world. 😀
What kinda knife is that that you carry. It looked like one I might need to get for myself. Smooth operating too you do good work.
It is a Gerber.
@@TheLeverMonkey oh ok they make good knives I have a few of them and a few of their multi tools. What model is it?
First timer to your channel and Im in the uk so not sure what you are doing it for whats the reason for the trench. Great control on the bucket great skill involed.
Thanks 👍. We were installing force sewer mains 2 16" lines.
I do alot of saw cutting for Preston out here in the Bay Area
Preston is big in the Bay
At the time I worked for mountain Cascade they claim the about 250 Excavator, plus bunch other equipment . Loaders dozers , rubber tire backhoes.
Have worked around them for most of my time in the union.
What is that your laborer is using to clean the road edge? Looks sorta like a landscape rake but with a straight edge? Looks super handy!
Just a flor scraper you can get them at Home Depot
Great vid bro… could of flipped the bucket round and dug from behind using ur spotter to guide you.
We do do that when we think it is necessary.
Great team work 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you 👍
I feel for you underground crews exposing utilities, their is so much shit buried i don’t know how you do it, a lot of potholing with shovel or water. Most locates can have miss marks, the transmitter signal bleeding off onto other utilities etc etc, its mostly by luck and trusting your receiver.
I had one telco locate on a busy intersection and their was so much crap buried their on the blue prints that i really thought about puncturing a can of orange spray paint and throwing it on to the corner grass and tossing up a handful of flags! 😂🤣
Awesome job but you need to take control of your spotter.
Yes, you are right
what’s the supposed to mean
That was ok mate thank you
Ground man needs to understand the pipe exposure process must consider the operator’s perspective. He’s the man that can bust a line.
We have been working together for years and know what we are able to do.
I I live in Sacramento County for several years the dirt there in Sacramento can I get suck really bad hard to work with
yes it can be.
Great video, I would give almost anything to be in the operator seat. It's basically impossible to get into your kind of work nowadays without having verifiable experience. But I can always enjoy watching videos.
Move to California and get into the apprenticeship program 5 years and you will be at full wages. We are short on operators here tons of work for the next few years.
@@TheLeverMonkey where abouts in Cali? I used to live in the Palmdale/Lancaster area from 01 to 13
Central CA Valley
@@TheLeverMonkey how hard is it to get in on a permit in Cali. I’m local 649
@@brandonmay6287 I would have to call the hall and find out. I can’t imagine it would be hard right now everyone is short on operators.
Back to the previous comment that Hard pan is pretty hard but everybody knows it isn’t teeth that makes a Digable it’s the way you dig
Their is reason behind the madness as a spotter, in thoa video you only see the operators point of view. As shanoe metioned in the video hardpan can be tricky. I like chewing under the utility first before diging the backaide, so once you are under the utility all you have to do is dig the backside and not have to come back and chew through it. My we need a cam on the real star of the show!!!
Stop using voice to text.
"we're gonna expose some pipe"
heheheheheh
Boy doesn't that look fun....
I enjoy it.
Just found in list and loved it...Annnnd subbed with a like
Queastion though what is that rod that he puts in the trench a depth marker?
It has a laser receiver on it the beeps when on grade. It is for keeping us on grade.
The conduit formerly known as "spare"
Tell the boss to get you some Paddle teeth!
Nice work Fella!
would not work in this material
@@TheLeverMonkey I’ve been digging deeps for 25 years. And they do better in sand then those utilitie killers you got there. Plus makes
For less shoveling for the boys.
@@sprucesoldier not digging.in sand.
@@TheLeverMonkey either way. Good Vids man!
Looks like you got a solid crew around ya to Boot!
Pipe with a rope through it the electric company is going to be pissed when they come to pull wire with their rope next week! Lol
It was a unmarked line and we did replace it.
@@TheLeverMonkey I dug one up once and didn't replace it I tied water bottle to the end of the rope and shoved it back in pipe just because I love the att engineers that much !
What is that labor using to push the drit in the trench?
It is a flor scraper you can find them at Home Depot
andy is lucky. here where i work 18 inches of both sides of a marked utility is all hand dig only
Each company has their own set of rules.
I like this video.
Where do you guys get that scraper that the labor is cleaning the road with ,I'd like to get one for our crew ,I Do gas work in buffalo
Not sure our supply guy gets all our tools. Never saw one before till I worked for this company.
Its a drywall mud scraper www.homedepot.com/p/Razor-Back-22-in-lndustrial-Floor-Scraper-2451400/205041042
That a 450 clc on the other end?
Kobelco 350.
where are you guys working what state
Watch my Q&A video response is in it.
Spicy dirt
So with hardpan eating away the outer edges of your split teeth how often are you flipping them? I swear I go through a full set every 3 months here in the desert working downtown Jobs our out in the boons.
Depending on the ground and size of rig I can go thru a set in 2 days or last a full job. I will swap the outside teeth when they stop cutting and start rubbing.
@@TheLeverMonkey damn, honestly that's impressive for your area, some other youtubers go through a set a day which makes me wonder how bad does digging really get. Then others such as myself can go months on the same teeth. Once again thanks for the video, good comedy as well as very informative.
@@13eckerlosmuerte yea if you are running a 200 or smaller rig the teeth will last longer. Have you seen my rock video?
@@TheLeverMonkey I did and I about shit a brick with the ripper attachment. That sound alone of rock and steel is pure agonizing hell. When I hit rock I typically call for the breaker and hydralic wheel chisel to be ordered for the job. I've ruined too many buckets with the "I think I can" attitude.
@@13eckerlosmuerte I don't get to make that call. They send it out and I make a hole as fast as I can.
Hitachi cab!
helo super video salutation France ..
Thanks for visiting
Nice video 👌
Thank you so much 😀
Maybe have cameras somewhere between you and him.
As soon as I get more cameras I will add new views.
Great job and video like always
I especially like John Deere 710 backhoe.
where is the air monitor for the trench. are they wearing personals? not seeing the ladders every 50 foot. no more than 25 foot of lateral travel, sometimes less if the shoring is abundant
Not a confined space. and the pipe cr3ew does have a latter you just missed it.
"fucking make up your mind" thats so funny, is that guy your preferred spotter?
Sadly yes. He is my foremen now. I passed on it and told him to do it.
Thanks for the video..... JJ...
Your welcome
Must be union.. Everyone standing around. 🤣
Lol sometimes there’s just nothing to do, I’ve been there where all I can do is lean on the shovel but believe me I’m back on my feet as soon as I can be
I live in Citrus Heights California for 7 years Sacramento County that dirt can be
What company do you work for ?
the way its dug should be wider due to buddy in the hole has no chance once it collapses?
we are allowed to be in a trench that is 5 feet deep with out shoring Class A and B ground.
17:26 There is no reason why the side of the trench is dirty and rocky, where is the broom?
just a few seconds after your comment the guys started to clean the sides.
Well done
Thanks
You doing a good job keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks 👍
Great video 🇺🇲
Oo looks fun
if inspectors here in phoenix az saw those shorings in our trench he would flip his ass lmao
And why would that be?
@@TheLeverMonkey well usually there’s like a wooden plate on the ends gives more coverage and I just have a feeling too they bitch about everything lol
We use those as well when they are needed in softer soil. This ground was supper hard and tight we really did not even need the shores other than it is the law.
If love to have a 100 loads of that stuff at my house lol
Good old Preston pipe line.
Killa video
Explain whats the point in pushing the dirt back just to pick it up?
Visibility. My point of view is much lower than the camera. The pile of dirt at the end of the ditch is blocking my view.
They really like to keep the side of the road swept off. Don't want the dump truck's to get any dirt on the tires. Geeze
The street has to be clean for traffic at the end of the day. We had to open the road every night. So keeping it clean helps cleanup at the end of the day. We spend less time cleaning at the end so I can dig for a longer time. That equals a more productive job.
When in doubt rip it out
Wow
Well Lever monkey your right about exposing the top layers first, but what you do when your labor insist to the other way.. I found that the labor were a click especially Mexican labors, If you didn't speak Spanish you were practically out. I've seen twice other labor being Spanish that didn't speak Spanish were Eliminated from there crews.
Why dig with a toothed bucked with live wires
All I had to use. It is normal for me.
What they don’t understand is they run the job those guys the foreman thinks he runs the job operator thinks he runs the job but really it’s the spotter or the guy that works closest to the bucket given the directions they run the job it goes one way or the other depending on them 100%
Well not so much running the Job. They run the dig and may double as a top man. There is so much more to running the job compared to running the crew.
I have the mindset of, My ground man is in control when I need him to be and I am in control between those moments. The pipelayer is in control of the pipe crew. When we all work together respecting each other job things go smoothly. anytime one steps out to say the other is doing it wrong all hell can break out. and production suffers.
And my ground man is now my foreman running the job. And I am training a new ground guy.
Little after 10min in you man is kinda under your bucket champ I don’t trust hydraulics neither should you just saying other then that pretty skill full at your trade
I agree you should never trust a rig. Guys can mistake trusting the operator to trusting the rig.
'talking to yourself?' 'sometimes'..... lol
this is noobie work.... everyone knows you get an underpowered small excavator and just dig...... being underpowered is key to not being able to break any utilities
While that is a true statement to a point. I always chose to go with the biggest I can get for the job.
أريد العمل معكم أنا سائق آلات الحفر من المغرب هل ممكن

I don't know if it is possible. I know I am not leaving the USA for work.
