Pro tip from a Floridian: use baby powder to help brush that sand off. Works like magic! I keep some in a tiny camco salt shaker in my bag’s first aid kit. Have a great hike 👋

Here is a trick I found when dealing with dirty water. You know , that wet stuff there is no way you want to get water from but have to.
Amazon has the ( 1 Micron 4"x8" Singed Polyester Felt Filter Bag PESP3S Size 3 ) filter bags. They come in micron sizes from 1/2 micron up to 100 micron. Use it when adding water to the dirty water bag it actually filters the water in the micron size you purchased. They can be reused and even cleaned. Just mark one side either dirty or clean so it is used the same way every time. Also if you wet the bottom before using it the water flow is a lot greater then starting with a dry one. They are a good way to make life easier on your water filter. Pre-filter the water going in the dirty water bag with one, then filter that clean water threw your filter. Say a 5 micron size in the bag to stop a lot of dirt , algae , floaties and anything else. and then the 1 micron of your filter with that cleaned water.
You have to scoop the dirty water so a cut down Smart water bottle works wonders as a lightweight scoop. It also doubles as a item to store the Polyester felt bag in.

I've fallen three times now in 500 miles of hiking the MST in NC, usually in spots where I've let down my guard because I'd gotten through difficult spots unscathed. Always such a complete surprise, it happens so quickly. Not actually a fall but my favorite was when I squatted to examine something on a muddy spot of ground, attempted to stand up, forgetting that I had an unusually heavy load, and ended up on my back like an upturned beetle. This of course ended with me accepting that I was going to have to roll over in the mud to regain my feet. Can't even remember what I found so fascinating that I squatted in the first place. Maybe a dung beetle.
