YEAR TWO | Renovating Two Stone Cabins in the Italian Alps

- Compilation of the second year living off the grid in Italy. I was halfway the roof renovation of the first cabin and got it weather tight just before heavy snowfall. During the darkest days of winter I carved out wooden rain gutters. Then moved on downstairs with the big work: digging out the floor, building foundation walls, digging trenches for drainage, sewage and plumbing. In summer I poured a floor, completely rebuild the small side room, replaced a lintel, fixed the holes and cracks and pointed the inside walls.

He just gets on with it, no complaining, just gets it done, its actually inspirational in a way that UA-camrs often aren't. This is content that should be heralded, flippin brilliant.
So true. Although, I in fact actually somehow feel it demeaning to him and his craft - what he produces in total, both by hand on the ground as well as cinematographically “content” - as it sort of lumps him in with so many UA-camrs who actually do NOT even produce “content” but are merely acting as some sort of online, desperate prostitutes, and thus only represent the way over-commercialized, likes-begging online and “social” media hordes of our age. Martijn’s work and production, quality, to me, are more along the lines of beautiful short films.

What a pleasure it has been to follow your journey martjin, I started following you late 2021ish, I had a serious accident that very nearly killed me and I had to relearn to walk, and I'm now on my feet again (95% with a lot of fighting and hard days but i'll never be 100% but i'll take the 95%), you have inspired me to live more and go after what I want. During that time I could live a little through your videos while I was stuck in bed for nearly a year, thank you for your content and what you put out into the world, truly.

It’s 10:30 am in the Northwest of the United States about 45 miles from Victoria BC Canada on Whidbey Island. The temperature is warm for this time of year at 52F. I am sitting in the living room of my cabin in the woods with a cup of coffee happy that we get a video from Martijn. Happy New Year and thanks for the artistry in filming and restoring. Have enjoyed it since the first episode.

And now completely renovating what was really not much more than two old piles of stacked stones into a stunningly gorgeous mountain retreat. Martijne - your channel is similar to medItation. It's a study in patience, calmness, serenity and artistic integrity. I am an American that lives in a tiny village on the Mediterranean Sea with my Dutch wife on the southcoast of Turkiye. We had the shell of a small village-style house built for us - walls, roof on a 1100 sq meter plot. We ourselves have added covered porches, stone paths and an extensive garden. We laid the floors, built wooden cabinetry in the indoor kitchen, an outdoor kitchen and shower and several small storage buildings as we're a bit too old to have done it all. The silence here is almost profound and the lack of humming background noise soothes the soul. After watching your cycling content were thrilled at this home content. It is definitely like s meditation and a very enjoyable channel you have created.

If you haven't already built it, I think your chicken coop needs the most sunlight available all year round. Length of day and the ability to sun bask impact on their health and egg laying. They can forage in and around the forest if you get them out of their run during the afternoon.
This wonderful man never gives up. His homes look better with every video and I never get tired of them.

Excellent episode. So many stories woven into each one. This one makes me laugh. "Let's go roll some massive stones uphill and move them onto the roof ? " and those guys showed up, and I learned watching them. What good-hearted workers! I am glad Johannes is there for Martijn.

Martijn , greetings from the USA, in Tucson Arizona. The precision in your build is a joy to watch. You are not afraid of hard work, and ask for help when needed. I like also that you take the time to hike and enjoy the beauty of nature around you. My husband is a craftsman, so I appreciate your attention to detail. I also get a real kick out of the cowbells as the neighbor moves their herd.

Marrtijn, I love your videos. Very inspirational. I just wish I was young enough and in better health to be able to do something like this. Your chickens showed me where the phrase "bird brain" comes from. You throw down food for them and they all head for the same piece. Not thinking that there is enough for all of them. They all want that one piece.

Few months ago I found this young fellow with a bit of land in the mountains. I raced thru 80+ videos and started over at #1! The difference in Martijn is striking. The first videos are more peppy and energetic, which makes his recent clips sound tired by comparison. But I don't think that is the case...it's his cadence that has relaxed and slowed down. He's moving with a new rhythm.
What an exciting adventure I can have right here from my cozy cottage by the lake!

Martijn, my sympathetic nerve needs a season of rest before the work on the next cabin begins apace. I found it difficult to rewatch the stonework and scaffolding after only just reaching the point where you're able to live snugly in that cabin. I hope next year will go more comfortably, what with both your hard-won experience and the level of infrastructure now in place. I can't wait to see what you've planned.
