I have woven valleys with architectural shingles for decades, never a callback, no problems. If you have to use sealant to stop a valley from leaking, you're not a roofer.
Now this is how you lace a dam valley. No California Cut BS. This is the most effective way to prevent a leak. Great Video guys. Ole boy is quick on his feet. Good worker.
Good day gentlemen, James Dunn keep up the good work. My comment is regarding the weaving on valleys? Do you ever wonder why builders don’t install any kind of underpayment on their valleys? Well I was told by a project manager that works for a builder and he said that as long as the valleys are weaved they won’t leak. Builders are going to do what ever it takes to safe money but before they do they get free consultation from their suppliers on how to install a certain product and what’s the most cost effective. He told since they build so many homes per year, the suppliers are going to give them the best advise on the how and safe money at the same time. That’s why builders don’t use starter or valley underpayment on their roof s and they still get approved on the warranty. So when the roofing companies do work on fairly new roofs after a hail storm they actually improve the home. This is my very first time commenting so please be kind. Im grateful that there is always plenty of work and everyone can share a piece of the pie. Good day
Question for you, In Canada whenever I see a closed in valley the whole roof looks in good condition but the valley is always the first thing to rot. You have the valley metal in there so why don't you just cut the open valley and eliminate the chance for moisture to rot the valley, or in Florida do you not have that problem?
Shingle valleys hold debris and moisture. They look great to start with but don't self clean in the way that metal valleys do. Good if your flipping a house but not for a long term home owner.
I'm thinking about doing a weave. I usually don't but I don't see how it could ever leak if you do it right. This is the only video I can find with architectural shingles. I think it looks great.
The moment you weave architecturals you void the warranty. The double laminate is too thick and it creates a gap in the valley. This is an absolutely wrong installation method and should only be used with 3 tab shingles. Read the wrapper its the only directions in big bold letters.
Probly ok to weave with NCO shingles if you can find good ones. The old days thats all we used and the three tab or CO. But No Cut Out were nice since flat and lighter per what was being covered. I think the arc-tech shingle is weak in the single spots and makes valleys bad to weave but worse to put 2 layers on also. Wish they made more NCOs with all the fancy stuff on it.
I'm from the old school hammer and nail. So you use a gun but I dont see you checking the nails for depth? I've pulled off many shingles from roofs where contractors used a gun
The shingles are Owens Corning. I am a preferred contractor for Owens Corning and it is all I use, never had a bad batch in 17 years of being a roofing contractor.
+James Dunn You are a fucking moron OC doesn't care who you are they just want the money they don't give a fuck who put the shingles on because they don't cover the installation only the shingle it self no labor. And all manufacturers are the same no fucking backround checks stop trying to make yourself seem like a big time contractor you are not, try paying your bill on time, Backround check that's the funniest thing I ever heard fucking moron, you can buy all you want at Home Depot and wait you need a back round check HA HA HA HA.
It should be no done it with architectural shingles just for the thickness that style is meant for a three tab shingles , these guy is good but I only concern on the nails to close to the joint!
Weaving shingles are easy to do.I baught a home 12 years ago and i have been fixxing dam lazzy ass contractors mistakes. The wotst one is no tar/roofing paper under the roofs shingles.A tab blows off and then there is a water leak in the attic.
mr1nutwonder These shingles are much thicker than three-tabs and are not uniform in thickness as well. This can cause a couple problems. First, the shingles are more prone to cracking. Second, the installation can create gaps where water can run under the shingles (at 1:42 in the video you get a good look at the gaps created).
Todd Springer I did the woven valley when I was working as a roofer years ago. Never really had any problems. Those gaps for the most part will close up over time and with heat from the sun as long as you don't nail the single tight. This guy should push the shingle into the valley before he nails. The steel being used in the valley, in very hot areas will accelerate aging. Valley flashing also works well, but many of the home owners didn't like the look, the main reason I would avoid using the so called California cut along with some of the other methods, I would only use them on rentals or where I knew the home owner just didn't care. Shingle in themselves are such poor quality, to me they are a waste of time, effort, and money. But we really have no choice in some situations.
mr1nutwonder I agree that valley flashing is ideal, but the look is not so good. California cut valleys can work very well, but you have to be careful when installing them. Still not a fan of woven valleys with arch. shingles :)
Todd Springer ya i heard the same thing, but older roofers tell me "when in doubt, weave your valleys" but there thinking about 3 tabs and don't realize laminate shingles are abit different. But i guess its personal preference, alot of these roofers don't have a problem and it doesn't really make much of a difference
So not true, its only an opinion... timberline are maybe what your thinking... They are a type of architect that are really thick n nonuniform. Pretty sure it says on the warranty too. I prefer cut but weave is just as good if you can install properly
Any real roofer knows that for number one... You cannot leave architectural shingles in a valley, due to warranty issues and thickness. Number 2 you're not supposed to nail into the metal flashing in the valley because it flexes you're supposed to Tac it from the sides. You're also supposed to put a bead of silicone on the edge of the flashing to the roof. Got... Looks pretty though LOL
Dude you are full of yourself. Maybe in snow country but this is Florida and that's the way everyone and I mean everyone does. I've seen maybe 20 different contractors do it the same exact way and they never leak so keep your insults to yourself jackass keyboard roofer
As soon as you interwoven those laminated shingles in the valley like that the roof is void because the shingles aren't designed to be installed like that
4/12 slope and run. Code is anything over 2/12 so you are incorrect. Look up slope and run in the 2010 Florida Building Code. I have never had a valley leak and have been a roofing contractor for 15 years.
So Florida code is to put metal in valleys and then lace with arch shingles. We got 2 roofers from Florida I haven't seen them do this. Why not use moisture guard instead of metal. It's wider, seals around the nail, and damn near glues itself to the roof. I still shingle over it, no lace, but still. If that's code in Florida damn that sucks.
Looks good but I probably wouldn't do this on a roof that is over a 5/12 pitch. I can see the laminate shingle cracking. However I see that you still put a metal flashing underneath. Smart. Great video.
I roofed 2 houses doing the Woven Valley and never leaked. Why would I change now??? Dunn knows what he's speaking about. It's worked for him and no leaks for 17 years. That says a lot. However, he says you must know how to do it. It says right on the Owens Corning Shingle Wrap that the California Valley /Closed Cut IS an ALTERNATIVE to the Woven or Open Valley. So basically on my 4/12 roof the Woven is a great way to go even with demensional shingles.
U guys haven't seen what happens after a few months doing the valleys like that. like all companies say 50 years experience but never been on a roof. First Nails shouldn't be nailed on the valley
James Dunn it’s just wrong you never weave them kind of shingles lmao 😂 comon sense don’t ask why just do what he did and see what it looks like afterwards and the ugliness of how it will appear your a roofer I’m assuming if so you should know this bro
As I understand it, a weave is not exceptable with laminate shingles on a valley, but this valley dam near looks flat, so that being said, it will probably be ok.
Pretty funny that you're weaving a valley with dimensionals. When you're not supposed to weave valleys with dimensionals per the manufacturer. The warranty is now void. LOL
Never was taught to weave a valley was told how much it sucks and after years and years of tear offs I can Def say weaved valleys look horrible the older it gets.

That shingle manufacture does NOT allow there architectural shingle to be woven. Check the web site for valley installation! Another guy who thinks he know how to roof . You just voided your customers warranty.
Every single roof problem ive fixed has been an outcome of weaving the valley. personally I wouldn't recommend. but good job. not one to hate on another mans work
Good job ugly shingle color.. Woven valleys are the best because it's double the protection why cut to make a line when you can use that for protection.. I've been roofing for awhile trust me they are the best valleys
California valleys are not warrantied either. And cars used to come without seatbelts. But they realized thats stupid. Much like a full weave up the valley. Its stupid. Laminate shingles can not be done like that. These systems are made for maximum protection with MINIMAL coverage. Layering shit up is not only, you guessed it, Stupid but brings your roof into greater risks for failure. This isnt 1972 guys. Stay up to the curb or it will pass you by lol. Roofing sence 96 and thats one of the first things i learned, fully woven valleys fail and are bad. Less its a 3 tab but even them i close cut. Ever seen a woven valley fail? They lift up,they saturate. They suck.
Good work. Wish my boss was cool with this concept. Would rather run the under side first then cut the reveal side and rum that after. Takes way longer involves more people when one could do it himself. Plus if I moved at this speed id get fired. Dude expects lightning fast work daily...
Hey man can't you roofed right and left handed at the same time why are you rushing into directions that's twice the time and effort you're right-handed obviously your guns in the right and you're moving to the left why not move from right to left like normal what's the problem and you got you got spacing too close to your Valley you're supposed to step that off it's okay to weave your arcs as long as you do it right watch my video Victor roofer
Dont want nail gun thats first thing home owner ask you dont use nail gun do you see they dont get 8 penny nails out as they go just gun over ply wood dont let no one nail new room plywood down with nail gun amen
Perfect does not get better, high wind nailing, all in the right pattern, weaving is pro!
Best video I’ve found so far on the topic looks great no California cut crap that the ice backs up under
I have woven valleys with architectural shingles for decades, never a callback, no problems. If you have to use sealant to stop a valley from leaking, you're not a roofer.
Weaving is the old way but is still in my opinion the best way.
Looks good man. Good work
Now this is how you lace a dam valley. No California Cut BS. This is the most effective way to prevent a leak. Great Video guys. Ole boy is quick on his feet. Good worker.
Cool but, I’d never do it like that.
Before anyone weaves their Valley you might want to check with the manufacturer to make sure you don't void the warranty.
High wind code in Fl. We cement all flashing including drip-edge and under ridge vents.
Great job, I have been weaving valleys for decades and not one leak. Great worker also, I would hire that dude in a heartbeat. Guy knows his shit.

It's to much work for them I would say. I think this shit is ugly !!
Which is better? Weaving or installing a metal valley with trimmed shingles?
Not once in 16 years being a roofing contractor. I currently have over one thousand roofs under warranty and never had to go back on a valley.
Haha lies .... every professional has a problem
Is there a reason this isnt done everywhere ? im north east idaho area and notice my roof is done this way .
Shingle valleys hold debris and moisture. They look great to start with but don't self clean in the way that metal valleys do. Good if your flipping a house but not for a long term home owner.

Right! It turned out great!

Weaved valleys are no good. End of discussion.
Are 54-degree slopes coming together into a valley weavable? Or is that bending them so much that they will just crack and break?
I think it looks great. I did my research and oc allows woven valleys
California OC ???
Slope on this roof is 4/12 and is common in Florida.
I'm from the old school hammer and nail. So you use a gun but I dont see you checking the nails for depth?

very good job I appreciate seeing excellence
We call them California Valleys because you need to be in a climate like California for this to not rot your valley!
Desde Upstate New York , buen trabajo
Good visual but I was looking for an explanation
Florida has strict roofing codes.
Every state is different
Nailing to high on those shingles
hope this is in an area where it doesn't snow.
why?
I love it when shingles are installed against warranty even when the instructions are on the back of each bundle
Great job
Thank you.
6 nails is code.
I think it looks great. I did my research and Owens Corning allows woven valleys
thanks dude
It should be no done it with architectural shingles just for the thickness that style is meant for a three tab shingles , these guy is good but I only concern on the nails to close to the joint!

Yeah, shouldn't be using architectural shingles in a woven valley. . .

Those look like strip shingles (faux dimensional) so likely fine. Most dimensional are not allowed to be woven.
No arch shingles in a weave..n3ed 2 nails on shingle ends..annnd no nails through the metal! Use nail heads on edge

Wow... I guess that's for wind... or some politician's relative owns a nail factory!
the top corner of shingle should go in middle of valley not the outside edge for a smoother less wastefull job.
Everything I viewed said 12" from the valley to avoid leaks
Looks great!

no those are closed or open valleys only no weave there too thick
I like it i will do it on my roof that was i looking for thanks amigo dunn. From mexico
+arnold lopez Your welcome
Woven Valleys on three tab only, don't do this with architectural laminated shingles. Read manufactures instructions and see they agree.
not bad..but i like to keep my seems farther out of the vally than that.
Void man warranty. Read directions on back 17 roofer
No one knows how to do a lace vally
should have shown right from the beginning, the first row .
Its all about nail placement.
Woven valley's are Mickey Mouse. A closed cut valley is the best.
looks better no hump less time guaranteed

How is wrong?

The shingles will crack at the valley lol another warranty that is void. 30 year shingle is now a 5 year :)
crush smith do you weave the first two rows?
As I understand it, a weave is not exceptable with laminate shingles on a valley, but this valley dam near looks flat, so that being said, it will probably be ok.
Wrong. Weaving is a three tab method and voids most architectural shingle warrantees. Closed cut or open cut with flashing for architectural always.

Nobody gives a fuck about the warranty. My company is confident in its work and we give full warrentys
