Rare Opal Pineapple worth $65,000 found 40ft underground!

  • Opal pineapples are one of the rarest minerals on the planet with fewer than 400 of them discovered intact to date.
These pineapples are double Pseudomorphs which means they have replaced another mineral structure in this case an Ikaite. Then calcite.
The Ikaite mineral would have originally formed over 100 million years ago and can only crystallise in freezing condition!
Today Noah and I explore my family opal mine with my sister Elaura and Moo the dog coming along for the adventure!
It was amazing to see the sheer amount of work that our father Graeme has put in digging underground.
The mine itself is a labyrinth one could get lost in for days. Luckily I have walked the tunnels regularly and know my way around.
The only area I had yet to explore was some of the historical diggings which date back to 1902.
It is crazy to think how hard they had it digging back then by hand with only a candle for light and in such tight confined spaces!
After some serious caving in the old timers tunnels, we decided to check out a section of the mine that has been flooded for some time in the hope that it might have dried out.
Unfortunately the water was still up to a meter deep in places and was ice cold.
To work the area we would need to spend days pumping it out.
We decided to head around and see if Graeme was having any luck and he invited us to help him dig the pineapple patch.
We got stuck in and Elaura had great success and found one!
With the help of Graeme she carefully excavated the piece before handing it over to him to take back and begin the cleaning process.
We unfortunately had no further luck digging the area.
Upon arriving home we found the specimens partially cleaned up by Graeme who informed us of the staggering value of the piece!
To celebrate we called the family together including Noah’s parents, Tracy and Norm and his aunt who happened to all be in town visiting!
All in all a fantastic adventure!
I hope you all enjoy the video please leave us a comment and tell us what you would like to see more or less of.

That pineapple was flippin' INCREDIBLE!! I had no idea opals could form like that! But watching you squirm through those tiny holes in that mine, and wade through that water had my heart in my throat. There's NO WAY I could do that!

This is giving me anxiety how do you guys remember your way out crawling through all these little holes? Aren't you terrified one of these might collapse and you won't be able to get out?

    • @younggunsopalhunters
      @younggunsopalhunters  Рік тому +58

The dog knows the way 😂 hahah honestly its just remembering which turns you take, there was only so many spots we could get through.
As for the rest of the mine I’m very familiar with it!
Not so worried about collapse in the old tunnels they are working in some pretty rough ground and weren’t taking lots of dirt away, it’s more dangerous in big open rooms.

I am extremely claustrophobic(like I’ll go into a panic if my head doesn’t go through the neck hole of a shirt fast enough claustrophobic) and watching you guys literally altered my breathing.
If somebody told me there’s $1 million Opal in there all you have to do is go and get it….nope ain’t happening.
The thought of being trapped in there or having my light go out while I was in there is honestly enough to want to send me into a full scale panic just thinking about it. At the risk of sounding like a mother hen I hope that you guys always leave word with somebody as to where you’re going.

I am so anxious now. As soon as you started going through those little holes it went off the scale. Much as I love Opals if I had to go through those holes they would have to stay there.

Personally, I definitely would want to keep that big opal. But I also realize that there's equipment and miners to take care of. I found this video today and I absolutely love it. One of the reasons I have a geology minor with my biology degree is that I love rocks and minerals. I have a big piece that is granite topped with a slab of quartz that is one of my favorites. I found it in Colorado. I've got a feeling I will love your channel. Oh I'd love to go down there and help dig for two or three weeks just to find opal for yall.
