@7:53 he just happens to be playing *The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening,* which is about a heroic boy who gets shipwrecked on a mysterious, magical, island that features puzzles, traps, treasure, monsters, giants, and even (albeit briefly) a mermaid. It's eventually revealed that the island exists within a *dream realm.* Taking the time to feature that closeup of the game in action makes me wonder if this was a thoughtful inclusion.
yeah! and in Beethoven they were playing Mario 3! A game about a put-upon middle-aged man being savaged by aggressive dogs.. well, black metal orbs with teeth attached to chains, anyway.
Memory unlocked. I remember watching this movie on the Disney channel when I was a kid. I would watch this and Adventures in Dino City on that channel a lot.
If you're a 90s kid, there's at least one Charles Band/Full Moon movie in your VHS collection that you mistook for a big budget theatrical movie. Mine was REMOTE!
It is the Puppet Master and Ghoulies movies for me. Young me saw absolutely no discrepancy between my favorite puppet shlock and proper theatrical horror movies.
That was usually the response I got whenever I tried to explain The Never Ending Story which I actually did not even know about until I was in college. I always remembered watching Magic Island either on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon when they had movies airing every Sunday afternoon for a while called Nick Flicks. Some of which were other films from Moonbeam Entertainment.
May I suggest, for a future You Didn't Dream This Movie, the one I saw as a kid, lying down on the couch while I was home sick from school, and I spent the next several decades quite certain that I _must_ have been violently hallucinating: Raggedy Ann & Andy A Musical Adventure
Same, but I never watched Home Improvement growing up. I was probably watching Nickelodeon, or playing the NES/SNES instead. The first time I can even recall seeing this actor in anything was an episode of the 90s revival of the Outer Limits called "Abduction." That being said, I'm in favor of this becoming a series as a movie I have seen will probably pop up.
I’ve seen this movie SO MANY TIMES when I was a little kid. It was always on Disney Channel. Had no idea this is made by Full Moon. But it makes total sense when you see the cheap budget of it all and some of the creatures. I can’t imagine this has aged well at all.
Here's a fun bit of trivia. Andrew Divoff, who played Blackbeard in this film, originally took on the same role in the 1993 episode of "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." called "Pirates!". That's why he was hired for "Magic Island", due to having already done it before with the all of the same over-the-top goodness.
It's neat seeing the same actors do the same roles in totally different films. One example that sticks in my mind is Raymond Massey portraying John Brown in Santa Fe Trail (1940) and Seven Angry Men (1955), what makes it more interesting is that in the 1940 film Brown is the wild-eyed villain, whereas in the 1955 one Brown is portrayed sympathetically as a zealous fighter for a just cause.
I quite liked Tom and Huck. It's funny how many layers of separation we have now from the origins of things. Like that movie was full of stuff nobody would do anymore, but it was based on books that they weren't exactly going to copy verbatim in the 90s either. I feel bad for all those child stars, it so rarely works out for them. But then, having crummy parents when you AREN'T a star isn't much better. It's all about those parents. Jaleel White said his parents kept a sharp eye on him on the set.
@@bobafettjr85 To be fair there's probably situations where an actor (whether a kid or otherwise) gets moderately famous for a bit yet isn't being offered roles in big-budget production, whereas there are plenty of low-budget films eager to cast anyone remotely famous. So it becomes a "I'll take what I can get" situation.
In the 90s I used to go to a day camp in the summer time and they always had this totally random collection of children vhs tapes and this was one of them.
OMG! I loved this movie growing up! I actually tracked down a VHS copy for my collection of childhood films. Its on my shelf right now. This movie gave me a love of merfolk😅
I saw ‘Wolf Man’ and the new ‘Salem’s Lot’ this week, the imagery of Vampire Grandpa at that kids bedroom window is more effective than anything in those films.
I worked on this movie (and Many more Full Moon and Moonbeam films)I was on the FX team making the mermaid tail and other practical effects, puppets and creatures. I didn’t go on set, though a bunch of friends did. I still own the red pirate coat that Blackbeard wore and French Stewart’s blue coat. Good times (when we got paid).
Your channel is amazing. Your videos and writing has only gotten better over the years. Appreciate this channel... esp when this lost movie shows up... i was literally "oh my god. THIS IS MOVIE!". Completely forgot it --- THANK YOU
Funny enough, I always thought that really was the name of the actual song that it was a parody of. Because I first remember hearing it in The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy. It was played in all the trailers and TV spots as well. Since he was playing an obese college professor, I thought it made just as much sense to the plot if “Nacho Man” was the actual name of the song because Professor Klump is always shown having a big appetite.
Dude, holy crap! As soon as you said "pizza tree", it was like a dam broke. I rewound to the beginning, and then everything started to become familiar. I hadn't seen this movie in like 30 years, but there it was in my brain.
Another movie you could cover with this series is "The Adventures of Captain Zoom in Outer Space". Took me 25 years to find the name of that movie, lol. I bet others may remember it as well. It's even here on youtube because somebody cared enough to upload their VHS recording.
I know you tend toward more light-hearted fair, but have considered Dragonslayer (1981) as an Almost Cult Classic? Amazing film Either way, thank you for consistently amazing vids! Good stuff!
I first remember seeing that movie promoted in a promo spot for Paramount home video which was on the VHS tape for a Rugrats Vacation as well as Charlotte‘s Web. The promo spot was a montage of clips from other Paramount owned movies all while the Happy Days theme song was playing. Dragonworld was the very last film in the montage to feature clips. ua-cam.com/video/IXRzlKwR-HQ/v-deo.htmlsi=fMD-9aPU0_tq23gE It wasn’t until years later in 2000 when I finally saw it as part of Nickelodeon’s Nick Flicks movie broadcasts that would air every Sunday afternoon.
Holy Moly, I just had a “I didn’t dream that movie” moment with that little clip from “Pet Shop”! Such a strange viewing experience for my family. I remember the main villain was an alien dressed as a cowboy that had a third eye hidden under his hat. That image is burned into my memories forever. Thanks Charles Band!
I have been trying to remember this movie for over twenty years now, I genuinely thought I misremembered a bunch of other films. This new series is a lifesaver
There was a dvd release but sadly it's picture and sound quality are awful and looks like they took the bad quality one from youtube and stuck it on a disc and it wasn't a bootleg neither.
Im really excited about the new series! I cant wait for you to point out movies that i vaguely recall seeing trailers for as a child and unlocking some memories. I was going to suggest 'Pet Shop' (1994) and was surprised to see a short clip in this video. That one and 'Prehysteria' kind of meld into one movie in my memory.
Zachery Ty Bryan was in the alien/school-shooting episode of the 90s Outer Limits. If you like Columbine and Flabber from Beetleborgs, you should give this one a "shot!"
*Thank you for covering this! I do remember watching this as a kid! That pizza tree lives rent free in my head to this day! There's another one of these fever dream movie featuring ZTB where he befriends a Lil Bigfoot.... it might be in fact called; "Lil Bigfoot." It was cheesy AF!* 😂
This is an exciting new series! My personal ‘did I dream that?’ movies were Leapin’ Leprechauns!, Beanstalk and The Princess and the Goblin so I was pleased to see some of them here, too :)
Only by the grace of having a crush on the mermaid, and the PIZZA TREE did this movie stick with me. When I recall the beginning, I drift into memories of PageMaster, when I try to remember the island chases and Tiki puppets, I drift into Muppet Treasure Island. So much of this movie became stuff of daydreams because I never knew the name growing up, then I'd look it up and forget it was so nondescript lol. Killer video, definitely gonna send it to the family.

I love the idea of this series. I grew up in the age of film before cgi so I witnessed many bizarre films with lots of practical effects and monsters and I’ve always loved weird films that make the best of a small budget. I can’t wait to see what comes next
There is that little bit of difference in age that shows up time to time in our joint search of nostalgia. Like this movie, while you little potatoes were watching Magic Island, People around my age were watching Reservoir Dogs, and Is Natural Born Killers. It's not a big age difference, only maybe 5yrs, but it shows up from time to time.
The dinner theater remark seems especially on point, seems like the exact right level of "not even remotely taking this seriously" that a script like this calls for.
If you’re planning to include any animated films in this series, there’s certainly plenty to choose from. The ‘90s was chock full of strait-to-video dubbed animated films, mostly from Japan or Eastern Europe of varying quality. “Unico in the Island of Magic”, “Willy the Sparrow”, “The Seventh Brother”, “The Little Fox”, “Tiny Heroes”, “The Elm Chanted Forest”, and “David and the Magic Pearl” are particular standouts for most Millennials.
At first I was like oh I know a few movies like that, that I watched late at night and never knew what they were, don’t think I saw this one though…THEN THE SANDSHARK POPPED UP, and this movie became IMMEDIATELY FAMILIAR. So yeah, I’m going to love your continuation of this series. “Explorers” was one like this that I saw way back and it stuck with me for over 15 years before I learned what it was titled and rewatched it. Then realized that I almost blatantly copied the alien designs when I was a kid.
I watched this movie religiously as a kid. I think it used to air on Disney Channel. Also I think diving into the Moonbeam Entertainment children films, i.e. Prehysteria, Dragon World, Leapin Leprechauns, etc would make for a great series. Btw your comedic edit cuts get better with each video
We didnt have cable in the late 90s. My experience of being introduced to this movie came in the form of somebody at Blockbuster putting the wrong tape in the wrong case. I rented another well known kids movie, instinctively popped in the vhs, and it wasn’t until he got sucked into the book that I realized it wasn’t a trailer, it was an actual movie. I hadn’t even seen the title, I just swallowed the whole thing in one watch completely confused but fascinated by what was happening in front of my eyes. It stands as one of the most bizarre experiences of my life.
I totally remember that “Nacho-man” commercial! Have it on a VHS from when I taped “Major League II” off ABC. That aside, this looks like a great start to a new Hats Off Entertainment series!
My brother in christ, THANK YOU. I honestly was starting to think I did dream this movie and confused it with the live action Peter Pan with Robin Williams. Those sand creatures haunted me as a child and that scene of the kid hanging by the rope is what I remember to this day.
This one went under - or is it over? - my radar completely. No memory of it whatsoever. I think I would have enjoyed it back in the day. Thanks for the video.
I just want to say I had the vaguest memory of the water turning black to trick the pirates to go on before I found the title of this film a year ago. It took forever to find but I'm glad I did. The pizza tree and sand shark came flooding back as I watched this.
I am going to love this new series. This reminds me of a movie that seems like a fever dream because I've never been able to find it. I remember there being little monsters or aliens or something, and a family that moved to a weird town that was all beige. No idea what it is. I remember liking it though.
I’m not even a full minute into this and I would always describe this film as having a Pizza Tree and a giant stone toenail! That was all I could remember 😂
wow! I remember seeing this movie only once on tv and never again, I would be thinking about it a couple of times and I thought it was a dream of a movie, my goodness this opened a vault of my nostalgia there!
Really glad you’re talking about this. I desperately tried to tell the other kids how cool the statue/temple coming to life was, but they didn’t understand 😂 lol
There should be a name for this phenomenon. I had been tormented by a movie that I thought I made up for 10 years before I coincidentally stumbled across it on Tubi last year. The name was "Phantom Town." I finished the video and checked, and yep, it's a Full Moon release.
One of the movies I thought was a fever dream but turned out to be real was Return to Oz. I was shocked to discover it was real. My adult brain just didn't accept the sequel to Wizard of Oz would be so damn dark.
Would love for you to do this on The Peanut Butter Solution. A movie I watched as a 6 yr old and wasn’t sure it even existed until the internet came around 10yrs later.
You could not be more on target when you say that the 'Didn't Dream This Movie' series could be made up of mostly Moonbeam releases. Last year, I finally found the one movie I thought I dreamt for my whole life, and it just so happened to be Moonbeam's second ever production, 'Remote'. I only actually remember the opening animated title sequence. It may also be my earliest movie watching memory that's stayed with me the longest. Would've made me 3, possibly 4, years old.
OMG, I had completely forgotten about this movie! But here's a funny story; it was catching this one late night on the Disney Channel back in the day that actually inspired me to read 'Treasure Island', the first true classic novel I ever read, and then write a book-report on it for my 5th grade class, which I got one of my best marks for! Thanks for the reminder! =)
Ah, Moonbeam Entertainment. I remember covering this one well. Came at the tail end when Paramount was bought out and executives saw little value in Full Moon Entertainment outside of their brand of family films. I remember seeing the sets of Prehysteria being reused for the temple scenes in Magic Island and my head exploded.
I must have seen this at least once. There was a whole age range of movies whose primary recollection was via dream, that later had to be chased down with Google-fu: Little Monsters (1989), Shipwrecked (1990), Witches (1990)
You shown "Munchie", Mark just covered that the other day. Small world. Now how about some Badass John Cusak films this year! An 80's legend and beyond that you never covered.
My version of "you didn't dream this" is the Australian thriller Fortress. Its about a teacher and students taken hostage my criminals dressed like Sanra Claus, Daffy Duck among others. Its a dark and disturbing movie that hounted me as a child. I found it as an adult and it held up and then some. Its genuinely great,
I am absolutely looking forward to this new segment. There’s an obscure Robin Williams film called “Toys”. I remember seeing it in Blockbusters a number of times but never seen ads for it. Would love to see you cover it. It may be a Cult Classic too.
thats not obscure at all. i remember ads for it everywhere. there was even a video game. it just wasnt a very good movie, so everyone promptly forgot about it.
That was the movie he really wanted to succeed that Disney screwed over by releasing _Aladdin_ right beside it, and then ignoring all his conditions to voicing the Genie.
The pizza tree! This also may have added to the fear of having to deal with quicksand! Have you seen Magic in the Mirror about the ducks that turn people into tea? Didn't really bother me as a kid but now it's messed up. Also, please do Mac and Me!! Love your videos!
I can distinctly remember watching this film multiple times on The Disney Channel in the 90s. Watching it now, it’s goofy and over the top but that was perfect for a kids direct to video film made in the 90s! Revisiting it was a literal blast from the past! 😆

Holy shit. I recognized each and every one of these movies. My mom rented movies all of the time and must’ve picked these out for me to watch.
This one went under - or is it over? - my radar completely. No memory of it whatsoever. I think I would have enjoyed it back in the day. Thanks for the video.
"this ain't no game, boy" lives rent free in my head.
I love all of the info you shared about Full Moon Pictures
What a great idea for a series!
Well done video as always, keep it up
Memories unlocked, thank you!
NACHO MAN! That guy ruled, I loved the Nacho Man.
Rest in Peace "Davo" Davenport.
your video caused me to look up what 90s movie had a dinosaur named after Madonna not realizing it was Prehysteria!
There should be a name for this phenomenon. I had been tormented by a movie that I thought I made up for 10 years before I coincidentally stumbled across it on Tubi last year. The name was "Phantom Town." I finished the video and checked, and yep, it's a Full Moon release.
Apparently the 90s was peak Zachary time.
Can’t wait to see more in this series. You oughta do a video with James at Dead Meat for this series
Wonder how many movies i watched exclusively on WGN Saturday afternoons
Great idea!
12:59 THAT THING!! WHY DO I KNOW WHAT THAT LITTLE FURRY THING IS!?!?
I must have seen this at least once. There was a whole age range of movies whose primary recollection was via dream, that later had to be chased down with Google-fu: Little Monsters (1989), Shipwrecked (1990), Witches (1990)
I remember watching this with my grandparents.
I like watching movies that are obscure and weird to me. I havent seen this movie but I really enjoy the channel!
I can guarantee I never dreamed this... I didn't even get little whispers of memory as you reviewed it...
2:45 i absolutly remember watching Prehystaria when i was a kid!
You shown "Munchie", Mark just covered that the other day. Small world.
Now how about some Badass John Cusak films this year! An 80's legend and beyond that you never covered.
Whoa the pepperoni pizza tree! That's where it's from! And Prehisteria! Oh man I need popcorn for this, don't I?
My version of "you didn't dream this" is the Australian thriller Fortress. Its about a teacher and students taken hostage my criminals dressed like Sanra Claus, Daffy Duck among others. Its a dark and disturbing movie that hounted me as a child. I found it as an adult and it held up and then some. Its genuinely great,
"Hmm, I wonder if I have any movies like this. Movies I barely remember but am sure I used to watch on cable"
"...Prehysteria"
"Well there's one!"
Nominate gnome named gnome for this series. Saw it as a kid and forgot it existed until the intro to this video
Channel surfing exposed us to things we would never have thought to seek. Streaming services ensures we stay inside our bubbles
It was great. Liked it as a kid and its a completely different movie as an adult.
That film isn't obscure.
@@In-N-Out333 Fair enough.😁 For some reason I always thought it was a fever dream like Sinbad Genie film. 😂😂
I think this is going to be an excellent series. A great idea that should jog some repressed movie nerd memories.
Full moon pictures is the cult GOAT.Puppet master is amazing
I can distinctly remember watching this film multiple times on The Disney Channel in the 90s. Watching it now, it’s goofy and over the top but that was perfect for a kids direct to video film made in the 90s! Revisiting it was a literal blast from the past! 😆
I remember seeing this on Nickelodeon a couple of times also I didn’t know about Zachery Ty Bryan getting arrested.
