Chabrol is fascinating. I watched this doc on the DVDs release years ago. He made me view this movie in a whole new light and it has always been one of my all time favourites. Chaplin is so complex and fascinating as an artist none of his work is without interest.

as admirable an artist as he was, Chaplin was fortunately,
also wealthy enough to escape the persecution of the witch-hunt era US,
and to be able to continue making films...
we are better for his having graced us with his art...
    he didn't have to

This is a clssic film, ofcourse from the legend himself.
But, does anyone notice that some of the gags in the Intro of this film don't work in sound films, whereas in silent films, they work flawlessly. These subtle differences...is what led to the death of the silent era. This is why, I love the silent era much better than the stupid sound era...lots of useless scenes these days..
