Kenmore Elite Quietpak 9 HE5t Bearing Replacement

  • The bearings in our Kenmore Elite Quietpak 9 HE5t were failing. It was VERY obvious. We put it off for months until we could no longer stand the noise from the spin cycle. I videoed it so I wouldn't have any issues putting it back together and decided that someone else may have the same issues and not want to pay someone to fix it. Maybe this will help.

    So here’s a fun fact…it’s been almost a year since we did this and the bearings have failed again. Now we definitely do more laundry than most folks with the constant washing of the table linens for the receptions, but one year? That seems a little ridiculous. We may do one more round of bearings and I may actually add a thick layer of grease to protect the bearings from the water…but this is my last shot at fixing this thing.

      Is it water getting to the bearing or just cheap quality bearings ? Possibly open the bearing seals and add more grease in the bearings themselves ?

    • @SugarChateau
      @SugarChateau  2 роки тому +1

      @@chrisstone8189 yep it is definitely the incorrect bearing seal that’s the problem. The bearings themselves seem fine. I didn’t notice it the first time we replaced the bearings but I noticed it this time. I’m hoping my seal modification works for a while.

      Or try glue seals in at the plastic side if you grease them the could spin and water gets to bearings game over! We used use felt glue for dryers I’m sure can find it somewhere.

      I think before you add replace new bearing ... buy Luca grease add more in the bearing before install, maybe it will last long... many problems because run out of grease dryout or grease melt...

      I have an older He3T. Ten years ago I swapped out the bearings and it failed about six months later. Upon doing more research I found out the bearings were guaranteed for 10 years and we had one month left on the warranty. I called Sears and they fixed it. It only cost me about $35 for a new nut to hold the pulley on the drum.
      The reason the bearings failed was because they spun on the shaft. The shaft diameter was reduced when I cleaned the rust off with emery cloth. Lessons learned: 1) check the warranty, 2) use Loctite on the shaft with the new bearings.
      I use the stainless steel tub as my fire pit.
      I think you watched the same how-to video I did.

    I'm halfway through this same project and found I ordered the wrong bearings. Waiting a few days to finish it up. This has actually been kinda fun!

      Agreed. It’s enjoyable taking broken stuff apart and actually being able to put it back together and keep using it. Very satisfying. Good luck!

    This video was very helpful. I appreciate you guys. I have the same unit. Ran into 2 problems. The local washer supply store said they don't sell the bearings. I could only buy the bearings with the tub assembly together. He said$500. 🤣🤣🤣. Amazon saved the day. Second problem was with the flared nut that holds the pulley on. After flipping it over and beating on it to get the tub apart, it got bent slightly. When I reinstalled, I got a little wobble because the nut was putting pressure more on one side. Got a new nut and rolled on. Thanks again for the video!

      I’ve since figured out the bearing seal I used is NOT the right one. The bearings fit well. The seal is not the proper one. Make sure and order one from whirlpool. It’s got an extra lip that keeps the water out.

      I got them off of Amazon. I can't imagine that the bearings would be much different from each other, but Amazon makes it easy to buy and or return.

    You guys a great team. Cracking up right now. About to try this with my son. How did you find the right bearings. There a so many types and my model is so old... been tricky finding the right size (unless they’re generic)?

    • @SugarChateau

      I gambled that they didn’t change by much. I’ve since fixed a few more appliances and it seems they keep the same equipment for long periods of time.

  • @peterw2714
    @peterw2714 Рік тому

    I have the same washer and dryer and I don’t know if you guys remember that it does have a cleaning cycle that you can pour bleach in it and it will clean the inside. also, if you’re putting the wrong kind of grease on that rubber seal, it will degrade the seal to where it will fail quickly. Lithium grease does not degrade rubber.

    Almost 2 years to the day and we're having to do this job again. The bearings started failing again a couple of months ago and it's now loud enough that we can't stand it anymore. I'm having to watch my own video to do this job once again. I'm not sure whether the moral of the story is to buy quality items, or make sure and video your jobs thoroughly. Heh.

    I am fixing to do this tomorrow to a friend's machine. I have a question. The plastic ring on the front inside behind the rubber seal, can it be replaced or ordered. Her bearing I guess fell apart while it was washing and chewed that piece up. Please contact me or this asap. 3-2-22

      And I wanted to ask you what kind of Grease did you use for the bearings and seal? Did you use just plain Automotive bearing Grease? By the way awesome video I'm still debating whether or not to do this or not to my own Whirlpool Duet ft loader. I've had mine since 2006 and I can guarantee you mine is experiencing the same problem you had. But I'm not sure I want to go through all that trouble and my wife patience is not very high when it comes to me fixing stuff. I contacted an appliance repair guy to give me an estimate of how much you will charge me to do the work with parts period that will depend whether or not I end up getting fixed or just getting my wife another one and fix this one while taking my sweet time doing it

      I don’t but I’m pretty sure in one of these comments is the amazon link. While the bearings are the proper ones, the bearing seal that comes with them is NOT the correct seal.
