For me, with this kind of music playing, I would take my time checking every corner for monsters waiting to strike me from behind, and slowly approach doors even though I know E1M1 like the back of my hand.
To be honest this track fits the theme of Classic Doom perfectly. You're a lone space marine stranded in the cold darkness of space, desperately trying to survive by scavenging supplies and learning the truth behind the demonic invasion. Not saying the rocking metallic soundtrack is bad, but that should've been reserved for Doom II where you're literally declaring an all-out war against the forces of Hell to save planet Earth.
+The Ugly Barnacle The original soundtrack fits more from a gameplay standpoint, but I also prefer the PS1 music over the original because I like to take my time on each level

@@alexanderklein4118 In Doom, the demons are afraid of you. The longer the Icon of Sin is on Earth, the stronger he becomes. You cannot just shoot a hole into the surface of Mars.

I'll be honest, my first experience with Doom was the PSX version. It gave a very strong impression of horror. Combined with the fact I read the manual about the story and it did feel scary as hell. Years later I got the PC Shareware version of Doom 1 and wondered why things were so different. It wasn't till years later until I got Doom 1 and 2 in full, along with Brutal Doom that I found out more about the differences between the ports compared to the PC versions. To me, both the PC and PSX soundtracks are very valid interpretations of one and the same. One takes a music and metal approach, which give something of a power trip in some vein even in the face of major odds. The PSX version puts some emphasis on horror and some will feel that more than others. I liked it and the sound effects from that version, to the point sometimes I play Doom 1 or 2 with the sounds and music. I like them both, and the PSX Doom menu music is one that's left an impression. My rambling two cents for what it's worth.
I think this overlooks the fact that there are some seriously eerie tunes in the PC soundtrack as well. Levels 3 and 5 of the first episode come to mind.
For me, this is my favorite Doom soundtrack. The music gave a real sense of isolation. I would stay up late playing doom in the dark, with my headset on, to keep from waking my girlfriend, and this just played right into that tense atmosphere. I totally get those who liked the rockin' original soundtrack more. It creates a different feel for the action, especially in the later levels. For me, these dark foreboding tracks juxtaposed with the crazy action on the later levels was especially jarring. You'd finish killing fifty demons, and when it all quieted down, that creepy music was still reminding you that you're alone in hell. I'd seen it on PC a while back, but never paid much attention, so when I finally played on a PC at a friends house, I was startled at how camp the game felt with the original music and sounds. Romero and Carmack should get the recognition they simply deserve. They changed the idea of entertainment for tens of millions of people on this planet.
They did, back in the day. Read Masters of Doom. Unfortunately, modern gaming has become more about cutscenes and corridors. Some of the fun has been engineered out of games.
Like Caddicarus said, you're alone, with nobody to help you and forced to survive the onslaught of enemies coming to kill you. Every corner you cross could be your last.
i am going to be listing to this music from now on, while remapping the doom 2 levels as this style of the creepy side of doom has been forgotten over time and through new mods, this has to be some of the best music in any game related to there own title hands down, this is what separated doom from the rest of the games.
for me personally this soundtrack was far superior! it's not some cheesy as fuck arcade music running around at 1000 miles an hour blowing everything up with no care at all, this music along with the darker lighting and enhanced monster sound efx made the ps1 doom a million times more enjoyable for me! I downloaded the original doom on my ps3 and couldn't wait to play it again, only to be hit with this shitty music and over bright lighting, it's just had no depth or atmosphere at all and didn't reel me in, it's amazing what a soundtrack and different lighting/sounds makes, made it a whole different kettle of fish! and like I said, far far superior to the arcadey crap original!

Ooh *shudder* this brings back memories. For I remember the name of the stage that goes with this cool but horrifying music, its called Barrels of Fun... Its full of barrels of gas and you gotta be extra careful that you do not fire if your surrounded by barrels of gas. And the creepy sight is that the sky is bloody crimson and full of fleshy dead skulls.
I loved the music, sad it was forgotten in the recent years, but still it should be remembered what Doom should be experienced alongside all the other SFX that the Playstation had that no other format had (except 64 version)
I find this quite frightening. It just makes me feel like I am actually DOOMED. Ya know? Haha!!!!
Problem is, demons should feel DOOMED when facing Doomguy. Not the other way around.
PS1 version ost sucks and only the kids who couldn't play the real Doom like this shit.
@@jigendaisuke8962 Not true. Just like many things, Doom can be interpreted in many paces. The fast paced rock music of the PC or the hopelessness and darkness of the PS1 version. I grew up with the PS1 version and I have played the PC version, too, several times. I like both. There is a thing called opinions, even if this is a 3 year old comment.
this music is like the hell!
"The keycards, Taggart! Tell us what they mean!" (c) Call Of Dooty mod interogation scene (Uses this track)
Ha ha, honestly one of the best uses of stuff like this to begin with.
PC: KILL EVERYTHING YOU SEE WHILE THIS KICKASS TUNE PLAYS
PS1/DOOM64: *Check your corners. Dont look behind you. Nobody's going to save you. You're on your own.*
True, The Pc version supposed to be brutal and extremely good, while the PSX/N64 version is just creepy and scary.
so much better than the PC music. this shit was scary as fuck. well done Aubrey Hodges for terrifying me in my childhood
amen to that! ps1 doom will always be my favourite!
If Doom had the soundtrack to Resident Evil
Doom PC music: "Yeah, lets makes some motherfuckin' demon stew!"
Doom Ps1 music: "Oh shit... I'm all alone... With a pistol... I'm screwed..."
"PC Doom would be like.... yeah, shooting demons, find key card, next level!" "PS1 Doom would be like.... I'm alone with a bunch of scary monsters, I'm too scared that the monsters will find me, I need to find weapons and fight through so I can get the hell out of this place alive."
💯💯💯💯💯
Where are the survivors? It’s quiet........too quiet.
Listened to this through headphones in the dark with my eyes closed. I honestly didn't feel scared; Just lost and alone, broken but determined.
I wish you could play with this soundtrack in recent ports of Doom 1. I love the PC soundtrack, but this one is so atmospheric.
Com certeza, o melhor port!!
And with the first note of this music, my life changed forever. I was John Romero's bitch - and Aubrey Hodges'.
Romero and Carmack should get more credit for what they did. Some noname idiots who achieved nothing have streets and other public venues named in their honour..
Best doom soundtrack collection ever by Aubrey Hodges.
Ese Soundtrack te hace sentir que estás en el infierno, adecuado para DOOM.
for me personally this soundtrack was far superior! it's not some cheesy as fuck arcade music running around at 1000 miles an hour blowing everything up with no care at all, this music along with the darker lighting and enhanced monster sound efx made the ps1 doom a million times more enjoyable for me!
Doom pc music: here’s some badass 80’s rock to motivate you to go kill a bunch of demons, nothing stands in your way!
Doom ps1 music: you are going to die, your only friends to embrace are the demons and the voices in the dark.
The face Doomguy makes sure is appropriate with this music.
love this bgm
This reminds me of Fallout and STALKER music. Not surprising considering that Doom deals with the grim and dark.
Chills all over body. :(
Boss: *static* i... is it working? Good. I have sent you to kill all the demons that have invaded earth. I-*static* just... rip and tear until it is don- AAHHH!!!
Doomguy: Boss... BOSS!!! Well, here we go.
