      I totally understand this. I had a hard time too. at least i got a bunch of reference fotos and while I was at London Iscetched a lot. Anyway I´m totally happy you did such an awsome Video. The landscape is so gorgous and I totally enjoyed it. As ever youre my insperation, chuck ! Thank you so much for sharing. Btw I totally agree with the words about composition. I mean the most of the people do have at least a feeling what work and what not- and in the end rules are made for breaking. So Composition are worth to do but in the end it in the eye of the artist..;)

    • @joyg8999
      @joyg8999 6 років тому

      @@Nikke283 there's a great book by Edgar Payne and Carlson. If one "understands" reads these you'll understand about the use of the rule of thirds or the golden rule. The composition will not be balance and many who know art will notice right off if the center of intrest ...the focal point is not on one of the thirds along with perspective. It just doesn't work. So I think that advice is not to be taken. It's not "rules," it's a guide for a balanced "makes sense," composition. Having a lead in and balanced perspective all is what makes a landscape work ...thus the work of the artist who creates it...that is also the fun part....coming up with a good composition. Also...just like everyone has their own unique brush marks...the artist also has their own paint mixing ability. Everyone in a group can paint the exact pic and everyone will be different, but it's that one that stands out from all the rest....the colors...how they see green etc.

      Heart of Chocolate- I totally empathize with you. I just got a degree in art, and was quite skilled in art. I was also working as a studio photographer on the side, when I was electrocuted by the power packs, which also blew out the lights AND prongs on it. I had problems, like extreme pain and I couldn't even have a conversation with people, because it seemed like they were talking a different language. Anyways, for Christmas, people used to ask me to do paintings for them for Christmas and I agreed, but as soon as I pulled out the canvas, I drew a blank and realized I forgot how to paint and draw. I gave up for years and as I watch Chuck Black videos (and others) I have been able to teach myself to paint again. I am forever indebted to Chuck Black and other artists who put these instructional videos up. This is the first time I have told my story on line. It was truly traumatizing. Thank you also Chuck for your videos and thank you Heart of Chocolate for having the courage to share your story!!

    Great work n thanks fer the lengthier version. Your process helps me a lot. I get so caught up in making toooo many details too soon. Also get u a small #01,02 or so angle brush. Use it point up with the base perpendicular to the canvas, like you did with big trees and it'll make those smaller trees just as easy as big ones. At least that's how I do it. Cheers

    Hi Chuck, I truly enjoy watching you paint . You were recommended watching from my new mentor that lives in Huntsville Alabama. So I pulled out an 11 by 14 canvas . I hope you don't mind me trying to mimic this particular painting? My colors are not matching your colors very well, LOL, but I'm going to try to keep the values very close to what I have on my blocking in colors. I subscribed, so I will be watching many more of your vids . Turns out I had already been watching your videos before someone recommended you! I only started trying to learn how to paint less than three weeks ago.

    ABSOULTY BEATIFUL!!! The colors of your paint mixes on the pallet look much brighter than what they appear on the painting as you paint. the painting colors look more true to color that you mixed. Is the difference the bright light on the pallet?. Just a thought. Best instructions and use of brushes and techniques. I would like to see more like this. Thank you so much!!!

    Really enjoyed this, Chuck!!! Thank You!! You know I really like the full-length tutorials. I had to smile, when I saw the Carbon Black back on your palette, too. I think you do wonders with the black, as I've told you several times. These full-length tutorials actually give more insight than you may realise - some of the comments you make, as you're working, let us know how you think and feel about the influences that inspire you, and the thoughts, as you work, that go into the painting you're working on, as it develops.
    The split screen is a really great thing, too. It's a constant reference to the colours, and how they look when applied to the canvas.
    Oh yeah... ;-) the painting is BEAUTIFUL!!! Keep moire coming, after enjoying the great weather. Looking forward to more vlog vids, too.
    Great work, and Thanks Again!!!

    YES! I like the longer, more detailed videos. Thank you! Now my question is this and I hope it makes sense to you. My paintings always seem to end up looking like cartoons!?? Is this because I'm getting my colors too saturated? I heard you mention this later on in this video (yes, I watched every minute of it) and I wonder if this could be my problem? I've been wondering what I'm doing wrong for a long time now and as much as I try, I just can't seem to get away from it. I incorporated several tips that I've learned from you on my most recent painting and even though I could see the improvement in some of the details, I'm still not happy with the final product. IF in fact, my colors ARE too saturated, how do I fix this? Do I just add a color that will "gray" it down a bit? I appreciate any and all help from you and I really enjoy watching your videos. If it would make more sense to know what I'm talking about, and if you have the time, you can see some of my paintings on my facebook page called "Sunlight Paintings". Thanks again, Emma.

      Hi...not sure what you mean by cartoon looking...if I can see them I'd know. As far as saturated. ...working with 3-4 values in your landscape is good. Always keep your values together. ..don't have them scattered all over the scene. Start with your lights, mid darks, darks and lightest lights.
      Lights for the distance, mid darks for mid section and so forth...lightest lights are for your very last highlights in foreground.
      Each value should be mixed or neutralized with a gray, or earth color like burnt umber. Some use compliments instead. But as you see Chuck in this video how he mixes his blue value for distant mountain he uses grey...light value. Hope this makes sense. If the value is not correct the color will look to vivid and or saturated as some call it...
      Important though is keep them together. ..as example. ..Chuck uses light blue in distant mountain. ..then mid blue for next (layer coming forward) mountain. ...and dark for next...working in layers this is your first step (blocking in ) all the shapes within the scene....with the values in each. Many paintings become looking like it's just not right...not realizing that there is a light value in background. ..then a light value in foreground and such....keep them together. ..stick with 3-4 values sometimes 5 with accent highlights. ..that's the lightest light in end. Like a highlight on foreground leaves on a tree.

    I really liked this step-by-step video describing how to layer the color values, the texturing detail, brushes used, etc. You did a great job. I would enjoy seeing more like this. I am a realistic, detail artist and this lesson is really good for those new to painting. Beginners need to see the process of layering colors for depth and values. It is a slow process, but well worth the time spent for the finished painting. If artists expect to create beautiful paintings in 30 minutes it will look like a 30 minute painting. Keep up the good work Chuck!

    Would you have the time to show us how you make your canvas panels? I learned a lot from how you gesso your canvas.
