Modes Made Easy for Songwriters

  • Are you a beginner musician or songwriter? Have you heard of the modes? Do they feel elusive and confusing?
    Well, I'm here to say that they don't have to be. The problem with the modes, in my opinion, is how they are taught and explained. Think of the modes as scales, and learn which modes are minor and which are major, and you are basically good to go.
    So, next time you find yourself trying to write a cool melody, or soloing over a chord passage, all you really need to remember is 1) what chord are you playing over and 2) what kind of sound are you looking for over that chord?
    That's it. Now have fun writing songs or rocking out!
