  • From the X-Flite range Greys have developed a bang up to date version they call the XF2, with the introduction of more features and an improved finish at an excellent price so they say...
Hywel thought he would try it out for himself and explains what he looks for in a great rod. He also gives you a few tips on when you find your self looking through the forest of rods in the shop.

Good review! I bought the 5# 8´6 few days ago. The rod is a real pleasure to cast up to 10-15m but almost feels abit overlined when you want to cast the whole length of your line. I am an average caster and can still get my 30yard fly line out but it doesnt feel nice to make those casts due to the rod being overstrained. There´s one thing I dont agree with and thats the markings on the rod. The black line on the blank has very little contrast and is very hard to see when its darker outside

Glad you like it as I have already bought one, Im a crap caster so more rod than I need but my older rods are far too soft which i dont like.
One question, why would a sinker cast differently to a floater. Only use floaters myself, so far.

hi all, I got xfII #2 10ft, this is my FRN rod, one of the best for this technique. I had opportunity to saw prototype last year(my friend tested it), it was disgusting rod - overloaded, unbalanced rod, lot's of fish has been fall.
But XF2 is totaly different rod really one of the best for FRN/CZN. Tip action is totaly different than other FRN rods - there is really soft and sensitive tip so there is no problem to cast 12 FR. leader with micronymps

Great Review------I was given a Greys XF2 Streamflex 9 ft. 3 wt. fly rod for my retirement years ago. I broke the tip section recently on a fishing trip---made me sick---I have been trying to find a company that will sell me a new tip section with no success--do you have the name of a company that will sell me another tip section?----This is the best lightweight fly rod I've ever used and hate to lose it because of the break. Thanks for your help in this matter

The only chance is to contact Hardy Greys and ask them but I think you will struggle - best of luck

A sinker will travel quicker through the air so casts easier
