Thanks for this. As a maintenance man I have access to quite a few old lock cylinders and knobs, that's how I've been getting a lot of my education, by picking them and learning how they come apart. I've seen these holes on some of the plugs and wondered what they are for.
Very important to know if you are learning to pick. I picked a lock and from that moment could no longer use the key ...in other words I had simulated the owner key. I had to use a professional locksmith who quickly diagnosed this as the issue.
When I first started taking locks apart I wondered what those ball bearings were used for. I'd take out the core and a few would fall out. I started to collect them. Good Video PJ!

Do you sell KIK cylinders that have plugs with drilled holes for the PK balls? I'd like to learn how they work in my hands, but only see possibly IC cores when searching. Common SC1 or the like is fine. Thanks.
Weird. We use 3 small balls to simulate 3 when doing construction keying. Mostly we do the balls in the first or second line when doing systems but customers sometimes give us their own numbers and some have the balls second to the last so we have to drill new holes in the cylinders we have.
Awesome info. 14 years locksmithing and that was never explained to me. Thanks. I always wondered what the extra holes were for.

Great video. Thanks a lot for posting it. I now understand why my builder said to me not to use my actual house key in the locks until handover 👍
Wow, such a clean and elegant solution! :) Thanks for explaining this concept very well!
Thanks! -PJ
