when trying add color (from the animate dropdown on the layer) to the side of the stroke or shape, AE 2024 is saying I need to place the shape or stroke into a group (empty). I have the renderer set to Cinema4D. What am I missing?

You need to click the shape inside of the shape layer before adding color.
