What was interesting about the post-album reviews and interviews was how much Metallica protected Lou Reed from the negativity. Lou Reed was ill during this period and Metallica knew this, they took the full weight of the bashing. Kudos to Metallica for this.

What needs to be understood, this is a Lou Reed album. Its not a Metallica album by any means. They did a collab with Lou Reed at the Rock and Roll hall of fame and the idea was spawn. Its not a terrible album, but do not expect too much of James Hetfield singing. Its more of Lou Rees doing slam poetry. I will say the music and riffs that Metallica came up with for thia album are pretty good. To me Dragon is the standout track. Which is quite surprising that we are getting a reaction to us. I know you have been going through all Metallica discography. I think there should be reaction for Garage Inc.

@keefriff99 and whats truly awful????? Lou Reed speaking and singing? Or the riffs Metallica came up with. Im not saying by any means its a masterpiece, but there are good riffs on there. And you can tell me there weren't riffs on there you wouldnt jam out too. End of the day, Metallica has done what they have wanted, when they have wanted. Doesnt matter what anyone thinks. They do what they want, they are the outcast, I applaud them. They take chances no one else would.

Metallica wasted some really promising riffs on this project. The production is also quite good…I just can’t stand what Lou Reed is doing here. It’s a total stylistic clash.
If Metallica wants to do projects like this, they should be prepared for negative feedback. I’m under no obligation to like this just because I’m a Metallica fan. I went into it with an open mind but I simply can’t stand it.

Mistress Dread is basically Dyers Eve 2.0

  • @FractionalBruce
    @FractionalBruce Рік тому +6

I honestly think this album is trash. Now I can admire Metallica for not giving a fuck and just thinking, fuck it, why not? They didn't have to release it, it could have just sat on the shelf indefinitely, but they probably listened to it, knew it was bad, and released it anyway. That takes big cojones to do, and not care what people think.
For them I think this was just a fun project that they could try and do, at the end of the day, how many people can say that they had the chance to collaborate with Lou Reed? I don't think many people would turn that down. Additionally I'm sure in their minds they probably were thinking of some of Lou Reed's more commercial, well known music, when they agreed to the collab, not his more avant garde weirdness.
Lyrically, the album is definitely interesting, and I think musically there's lots of cool ideas and riffs, but the two don't mesh together at all, and that's the biggest flaw of this album. I think you could have Lou Reed doing this album by himself and it would be fine, and you could also have Metallica taking Lou's lyrics and having James singing it, and it would also be fine, but together it just sounds like a mess. The production feels haphazard, and I think that's because it was, I remember seeing the band talk about recording it and they said that they would do a few takes and move on, it very much feels like they were going for atmosphere and spontaneity, rather than a super slick and polished record, or maybe Lou Reed was just lazy? I guess we'll never know.
This album is an oddity, one which I'm glad exists, if not just for the sheer audacity of it, I'll never listen to this album and enjoy it, and I find it hard to believe that there are those who genuinely do, to those people, I salute you. Respect to Metallica for trying and failing, rather than going the way of so many nostalgia bands and just not trying at all.

LULU is intended to subvert expectations. Much like the character from Frank Wedekind's stories, this album can be seen as an allegory of defiance against societal norms and conventions. LULU embodies the essence of an enigmatic and alluring figure who challenges conventions and incites thought-provoking discussions. In the same vein, the album disrupts traditional musical expectations. It's an art project that deliberately avoids aiming to please and, instead, seeks to challenge the listener's perceptions.
A fun fact - the photograph of the puppet from the front cover displayed in a Berlin museum is credited to a man named Stan Musilek. Considering this, I can appreciate a little bit more what they have done... Otherwise, it would have been no good record. But as I say, I think it was not supposed to be.

    A few things:
(and I'm aware someone else may have already answered/mentioned these.)
It was brought up multiple times how this album came about. They performed together in 2009 at Madison Square Garden for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert, and they got to talking about a collaboration. Metallica performed with Lou Reed (ua-cam.com/video/aoyoBUoy6UI/v-deo.html), Ozzy (ua-cam.com/video/x6LXp9uWQUk/v-deo.html), and Ray Davies (ua-cam.com/video/W3OY1bbRgTY/v-deo.html).
Regarding live performances of these tracks...They performed a few of the tracks on three late night tv shows in Europe in November 2011. "Iced Honey" was performed a total of four times (twice at one taping), "The View" was performed three times, and "Dragon," "Junior Dad," and "Mistress Dread" were all performed at one show along with the other two. Then, at Metallica's yearly fan club shows, they invited Lou Reed as a guest and performed "The View" and "Iced Honey" for the fan club at the Fillmore in San Francisco on December 7th, 2011. These were the 30th Anniversary fan club shows, and they also had Jason Newsted, Dave Mustaine, and others as guests for one or two songs each.
This was the first time I've listened to the whole album. I had heard "The View" when the album was prepping for release and tried to listen to each song once before giving up about 30 seconds in for each one. I originally had the deluxe edition of the album preordered through Metallica's website and cancelled the order once I realized it was going to be a fat steamer. To this day, I have never bought a copy of this album, and I am a hardcore Metallica fan who has attended double-digit live shows. It was nice to have you guys listening simultaneously, analyzing and chatting throughout. I feel like we should all have some sort of rare achievement badge now.
Looking forward to Hardwired, Garage (Disc 1), and S&M!

I am a HUGE Metallica fan. I have listened to their entire discography many, many times. However, I had never listened to this album before today. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I am so glad I watched it here first because I would have never been able to make it through on my own. Every time a song came on, it felt worse than the last one. I love Metallica. I hate Lou Reed. That will never change. Thank you guys for suffering through this for us. Can't wait for the S&M reaction!

After your final reactions to Hardwired, Garage, and S&M, there are some other Metallica content that should be given a listen. Like other comments, the Presidio demo album recorded just before James entered rehab would definitely be an interesting video as i also discovered the demo album from your video of re-listening to Ride The Lightning. It would also be interesting to hear your reaction to 2 demo songs called "Death Is Not The End" and "Vulturous" played only live before Death Magnetic released. The takes you would state would be interesting to hear and as a St.Anger and Death Magnetic fan I'd be more than thrilled to hear what you have to say about these recordings. Aside from that though, I've enjoyed your reactions to the Metallica discography and I will continue to return for more even if opinions don't align. I can only wish for more content from you so keep up the good work. There are loads of fans, such as myself, who thoroughly enjoy your work so continue to post whenever you wish as we'll always return for more

Godspeed You! Black Emperor has a double album, "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" that has FOUR SONGS.
You've probably heard them before, they were the solemn guitar-lick background song they played when the hospitalized guy/survivor first made it out to the deserted London streets in '28 Days Later'. That was 'East Hastings" on their F#A# album.
    Why do I write this?
Because unlike the last song here.... that's how you do slow, sparse 18 or 25 minute songs and make them listenable, possibly even enjoyable.

I’d be willing to bet a good amount, if not all of the noisy, textural, effect guitar stuff here is Kirk. That’s far more his thing than James’, and I wish he’d do more of that these days. It’s all over the Load/Reload era. His solo EP sounds basically nothing like Metallica.
I always respected Metallica’s openness to music that wasn’t metal. I feel that the greatest sin an artist can commit is to be boring, and metal, as much as I love it, is often guilty of being influenced only by itself.
I enjoy watching your reactions to these, not just as a Metallica fan for thirty years or an audio engineer, or a guitarist, but because you have different musical and artistic tastes than I do. I grew up as a classical musician and admit to liking some decidedly uncommercial and deliberately difficult music, so I’m going to have a very different take on some of these things. But I think it’s interesting seeing someone do a deep dive on these things.
And yes, the drums and guitars are *very* recognizable.
Curious what you’d think of Opeth or Mastodon.
