I so love these lab visits! I’m an art museum employee (director at a small academic museum these days) and have worked with conservators for many years. I so miss the days when I could walk into the labs at National Portrait Gallery/ Smithsonian American Art Museum and just watch and ask questions when I and the conservators had time.
Some really fantastic insider knowledge and some really cool tools that I wasn’t aware existed!! And Matthew? What a completely lovely guy with such practical institutional skill and knowledge!!!
Otto Frei is another great jewelry tool supplier. I have spent an awful lot of money with them in my nearly 30 years as a jeweler. Stuller is probably the largest jewelry industry supplier, but you have to set up an account with them.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to work in one of these shops toiling away without much celebration to the art. Then Adam comes in. Undeniable energy and enthusiasm, loaded with specific questions you can’t wait to answer, co-workers witnessing how complicated and interesting your job actually is. I’m guessing these hosts sleep well this night. This is always fun to watch
Kid in a candy store, analyzor, understander, notetaker - Adam is all of this when visiting other workshops. He understands what the modus operandi is and still is delighted when he learns new things!😁😁🤘🤘
LOL. Makers are as makers do. We All want to tour each other's shop, eye the tools, see their forms and patterns and processes. Rarely to directly steal (we all love doing Our take), but because the opportunity for new processes and tools, to trade know-how, is priceless.
I love that even in a precise and well honed shop, they still have stuff in a drawer that is "I'm not sure where that came from or why it's in there" Makes me feel more comfortable with my attempts at 'organization'
Hi that was me. A co-worker told me about this comment. Very embarrassing. Brand new shop. i was placing empty spray paint cans into a tube one at a time, and hammering a screwdriver into each bottom,.so they could empty out all pressure and paint and be disposed of. This worked great for the 20 empty ones. I was putting one of til the end as it wasn't quite empty but yet didn't work. it like propelled out, black paint onto our new shop. I was able to cover the drop ceiling tiles white spraypaint, but one was moved during that time and was left with the story. Matthew (in teh video) has since.made a brilliant yet simple contraption to pierce old spray cans. Its the same tube with a closing lid, and a spike at the bottom. you just have to put the can in and slam it downward.
I'm sure that Matthew would pick up just as many new ideas if he visited Adam's workshop. They could have a conservation reciprocation conversation, ha.
Rio Grande catalogs are DANGER! Your pocketbook is at risk, for real :) My late wife was a glass bead/jewelry maker and Rio Grande was the source of many of her Xmas gifts. Enjoy your expensive trip down the rabbit hole, Adam!
that was a blast!! thanks for the tour, Adam. Yeah the usage of compressed air with the oxy touch is brilliant. I have an antique mill roller that I picked up at an estate sale for literary free for helping out to sort things there. It belonged to a watch maker, car, engine, blacksmith enthusiast . I dont know yet that I will ever need to use it but will hang onto it for sometime. Its a beautiful piece that can just sit and look beautiful in a shop!
Adam, you are so bad for my credit card. I don't know how many tools I have bought that I have only used once, but I was so glad I had it. 'Matthew, I really appreciate that you have given me a few hundred dollars to spend today."
I absolutely love those handheld band saws. I have 4 different sizes of them and use them constantly now. I hardly touch my angle grinders with cut off wheels anymore.
The little 12v seriously punches above its weight. I've had or used the whole Milwaukee bandsaw line and that 12v will do a lot more than you would think. A buddy has a similar sized Ryobi (same parent company so it makes sense) that is great too because of the handle design. So if someone is in the Ryobi ecosystem, don't sleep on that saw. Surprising to me is the Hilti saw that size, it doesn't hold the blade near as well as the Milwaukee, slips and binds like crazy. Big disappointment even without considering the Hilti premium price.
I’ve just looked for 5 minutes into replacing oxy for compressed air, and I would advise anyone to do some research into it. It may actually be far more dangerous as one thinks. From what I have read, the main risk is oils and others contaminents or particles that may occur from (faulty) compressors. A bottle of O2, no need to worry about such factors. Sure, there are risks there, but those are constant. Do not just hook up your compressor without any thought. You may have a bad time.
Fun shop. I was hoping to see the tool drawer from the video cover shot in the video tour but it wasn’t there. I’m curious how they were storing/ organizing their needle files.
Since we're talking tools, I always suggest everyone get a set of gunsmith's screwdrivers. Not every day screwdrivers but if you want to screw without marking they really grab well and accurately.
Adam: Adam, later: Some Met Employee, even later: "WHO PUT THE MANDRILL IN THE WRONG LOCATION!?!? I WAS LOOKING FOR 20 MINUTES!!!!" XD XD XD Thank you for this tour, it's incredible!
The compressed air torch is aweome. I've seen blowpipe torches but not one like that. I'm looking to get an Oxy concentrator for my home shop. I think Adam's head would explode if he were to visit the jewelry shop where I work. 😄 It’s a very small shop but we have lots of really cool tools you don't see every day.
The mask comments are unhinged. I can't believe this is still a thing that brings people out of the woodwork. Without breaking a sweat I can think of 6 different reasons why a person might want to wear a mask, all of them completely valid and individual. The seventh reason is the best one and the only one that's worth mentioning: because mind your own business if it's not harming you in any conceivable way.
Wishing Mr. Adam Savage & Mrs. Don't Try This At Home, The Tested Crew, and all their families, including fur children a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hey Adam, I've seen a medical home oxygen concentrator used for jeweler torches they work quite well
The delight Adam shows when in another shop is infectious. He clearly loves the discovery process when seeing how others do things.
Like a kid in a candy shop.
I love that Adam is just cataloguing everything to eventually update his own workshop.
he's gonna need a shop extension to any anything too his shop haha

One of my favorite videos of the year. I love workshop tours - and yes , they are expensive for me too!
Some really fantastic insider knowledge and some really cool tools that I wasn’t aware existed!! And Matthew? What a completely lovely guy with such practical institutional skill and knowledge!!!
THATS MY UNCLE!!! He IS a completely lovely guy :)
@ absolutely!!!
Rio Grande is about to have a very good Christmas day, name-checked by a Met Museum conservator in an Adam Savage tested vid.
It’s is a great supplier for high end files and much more.
They must be scratching their heads looking at the website visits.
😊
Otto Frei is another great jewelry tool supplier. I have spent an awful lot of money with them in my nearly 30 years as a jeweler. Stuller is probably the largest jewelry industry supplier, but you have to set up an account with them.
Get their printed catalogues.
Adam's like a beady-eyed magpie whenever he's in someone else's shop 😂
I cant blame him. I'm the same way and it's such a privilege and joy when someone allows me to snoop ❤
Kid in a candy shop.❤
All makers are; every chance to puck up that extra bit of knowhow.
and there I was, trying to kick my tool collection habit, along comes Adam geeking out in the most spectacular way imaginable
Let's get expensive indeed
Seeing Adam discover and love a tool that I own and use every day makes me feel satisfied.
I love how every shop has secrets and tricks to learn
I can’t imagine what it must be like to work in one of these shops toiling away without much celebration to the art. Then Adam comes in. Undeniable energy and enthusiasm, loaded with specific questions you can’t wait to answer, co-workers witnessing how complicated and interesting your job actually is. I always love seeing how other people / makers arrange their setups. You can always find inspiration.
Thank you Adam and Matthew for a wonderful Christmas present.
I'm so jealous. This is the coolest shop I've ever seen. Oh the things I could create! I love how excited Adam gets.
Haha, I love the pure joy and comradery here. They are so enjoying each others company in loving their workspace.
This was an excellent tour of Adam’s Christmas wish list. Well done, gentlemen.

As a retired goldsmith many of these tools are so familiar to me. Even in retirement I do keep my hand in.
Was quite enjoyable watching you compile a shopping list as you toured the shop 😂
I love that even in a precise and well honed shop, they still have stuff in a drawer that is "I'm not sure where that came from or why it's in there"
Makes me feel more comfortable with my attempts at 'organization'
I could watch Adam rifle though drawers for hours, it should be its own channel lololol
Awesome tour but would have loved a 3 minute explanation on the kind of work they do in the shop to put it all into context!
Oh yeah, I went in thinking it was going to be about restoring paintings and then there were a ton of metal working tools lol
That automatic torch lighter is my favorite thing from this vid.
I would love to hear the story about the stains on the ceiling above the fume hood 😮😀

Welcome to the world of Milwaukee's M12 platform! They have some amazing small metal and woodworking power tools in the platform!
Welcome
I love my M12 90-degree die grinder. I use it all the time!
I think my favorite thing is watching Adam get his mind blown.
Thank You. As a mount maker, for a museum, who has no actual shop to fabricate in, I love this space. Hopefully one day we will have a shop.
It's always fun towatch you learn about new tools. Thanx, Adam. Merry Christmas 💙🌻🌲🌟🌲🌻💙
I need a version of Kitchen Nightmares but it's Adam coming to your workshop
Me first pls mine is a wreck 😂
I'm sure that Matthew would pick up just as many new ideas if he visited Adam's workshop.
They could have a conservation reciprocation conversation, ha.
Rio Grande catalogs are DANGER! Your pocketbook is at risk, for real :) My late wife was a glass bead/jewelry maker and Rio Grande was the source of many of her Xmas gifts. Enjoy your expensive trip down the rabbit hole, Adam!
I would LOVE to see some of the work that they do in that shop.
I love seeing all kinds of specialized tools that I would never have a use for.
that was a blast!! thanks for the tour, Adam. Yeah the usage of compressed air with the oxy touch is brilliant. I used to love watching these videos and finding new tools I wanted or needed. I love tons of tools in Hurricane Deby. Flooded my shop.
Adam is absolutely the definition of the adult version of a kid in a candy store here. 😀😀
Adam nerding out is my favorite pastime 😊
Love seeing behind the scenes!

Great job guys. Thank you 😊
Hi Adam, it’s great to see you in the camera game. I’ve been watching you for years well done.😊
Fun shop. I was hoping to see the tool drawer from the video cover shot in the video tour but it wasn’t there. I’m curious how they were storing/ organizing their needle files.
The Rio Grande catalogues are worth having on your shelf. Another world of tools and materials.
There's a lot of really nice toys in this shop.
If there ever was a time for security to pat Adam down before he left the property this might have been it.
Nice to see Adam Holiday shopping.
those helping hands on the solder bench are a near perfect scale up of the original king kong armature
Hands down the Milwaukee angle grinder. My Favorite tool of mine. Sooooooo many uses.
Since we're talking tools, I always suggest everyone get a set of gunsmith's screwdrivers. Not every day screwdrivers but if you want to screw without marking they really grab well and accurately.
I have a 20 piece gunsmith screwdriver set made in the USA by The Chapman MFG. CO in Durham, CT.
It's awesome! I highly recommend it.
I love these videos! I'd love this to become a series. Just Adam going around specialised workshops 😍
Thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas Adam Savage
Fantastic Tour‼️👍👍👍
Surprised Adam didn't know about Rio Grande!
It would be so amazing to work in a shop like that
The milwaukee m12 sander is really expensive lol. Their m12 line is awesome and we keep adding more to our collection as well.
Matt is a top man. Good video.
Looking forward to some unboxing of new shop goodies.
I wish I had the passion and wonder that Adam has
This makes me want to see Adam in Keith's shop from vintage machinery
Watching UA-cam on my laptop with Mythbusters on Pluto in the background AWESOME.
Episode: Shattering Subwoofer.
Merry Christmas!
You too, Ryan!
Very interesting tour!
Mr Savage, Please do a video on that torch set up when you bring it to your shop
I agree. I need to know pressure for the compressed air…..please. Such a great idea
@@briankane8523 Jewlry makers use compressed air torches all the time. I won't work for cutting/welding big slabs of steel.
We need a video of that guy doing work.
We are watching the genesis of future Adam's anecdotes about "This is the same one the Met uses in their shop..."
Adam:
Adam, later:
Some Met Employee, even later: "WHO PUT THE MANDRILL IN THE WRONG LOCATION!?!? I WAS LOOKING FOR 20 MINUTES!!!!"
XD XD XD
Thank you for this tour, it's incredible!
And in all honesty, this feels like the meeting of masters comparing techniques, and I love this kind of thing.
Adam is going to fill up his phone making a shopping list. 😊
I’m surprised that Adam didn’t know about Rio Grand, particularly since they have such a gorgeous catalog.
The M12 subcompact bandsaw is my hands down favorite power tool
Oh crap Adam knows about Rio Grand. 👏🏼
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays
Same to you!
Great work sir 😊❤
I was just at Lowes this morning and Craftsman has a V20 finger sander as well
As a hopeless tool head I must admit your channel is the one That costs me the most. lol
Merry Christmas ❤❤
some of the larger drawers need some gridfinity. even the fasteners drawers could use the grid
The bench top bender is a tool I've used in jewelry making so I assumed it was a jewelers tool.
What's the little thing he touches the torch to that lights it?
How the heck does it work? I don't see a spark or anything
19:52 thank you Adam for asking the same thing I wanted to know
Adam, you should find an old copy of the centaur forge catalog. It's a veritable reference library of metal working tools.
you should tour the McMaster Carr warehouse. That place must be insane\
The bins are from Schaller Corporation
The compressed air torch is aweome. I've seen blowpipe torches but not one like that. I'm looking to get an Oxy concentrator for my home shop. I think Adam's head would explode if he were to visit the jewelry shop where I work. 😄 It’s a very small shop but we have lots of really cool tools you don't see every day.
My dream is to have Adam come and want to take pictures of my shop.
Hilarious to hear Adam's gushing on the opening of a draw....phwaaaar.....😂
Adam, what are your thoughts on those cold solder combo butt splices with the heat shrink?
The right angle die grinder with scotchbrite or little abrasive flap wheels is the ticket for deburring most things.
The mask comments are unhinged. I can't believe this is still a thing that brings people out of the woodwork. Crazy how these critics understand exactly what's going on in anyone's life that wears a mask.
5:23 this made me smile lol
I'd love to see you visit a shop more geared towards practical/makeup fx. There's very little info on the set up of those types of shops and equipment
Thanks SantAdam. He could easily put these behind a paywall
Merry Christmas😊😊🌌🌌😊😉☺️🤗
Wishing Mr. Adam Savage & Mrs. Don't Try This At Home, The Tested Crew, and all their families, including fur children a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Thank you! To you as well!
That was cool.
That's the old generation Milwaukee M12 bandsaw, they just released the newest version
The M12 band file is excellent!
One minute in abs :mindblown: already. Sticky sandpaper on a finger? Oh man. Before i buy some Are there affiliate links for a video like this? Going tj a donation for the host organization?
