- Very few people ascend to that point in life where their independence affords them unqualified freedom to speak their minds without fear of retribution or ramification. Billionaire Rob Hersov, by all accounts, is one such individual. After three decades abroad - during which he worked under the direct tutelage of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and luxury goods baron Johann Rupert - Hersov made the decision to move back to South Africa. While Hersov admits that this decision was ‘insane’, he maintains that those who leave South Africa, cut the link and then proceed to badmouth the country do so because ‘that's the only way they can justify leaving this incredible country, they miss it.’ Rob Hersov was one of the speakers at the second BizNews Investment Conference which was held in the Drakensberg earlier this month. In his presentation to the delegates, he outlined the reasons for his return to South Africa, painted a picture of the political landscape to which he returned, and explained why he believes that South Africa is ‘absolutely uninvestable’. With the degree of candor only available to very few, Hersov stated; ‘Black empowerment is theft. Expropriation without compensation is theft. Why would anyone invest in this country with those things hanging over our heads? I mean, it's uninvestable.’

When Martin Luther King was fighting for his people's rights peacefully he was a labelled Terrorist. Madiba spent most of his life in prison because they considered him a terrorist.
Now that these men a dead, the people who called them terrorists now what to tell their supporters how these men would think and what they would feel? Pardon me if I don't accept a lecture from a rich man on how a black liberation leader would view any situation present or past.

Our country is running out of time and cannot afford any more ANC rule, especially not another five years !!! We only get ONE chance every five years. We just don't have the luxury of voting for small parties anymore right now. If we continue to split the opposition vote across small parties, the ANC /EFF could easily take wards they would not otherwise have won, and will maintain their stranglehold over our country for a long time to come.
Let's start to fix our municipalities and metros one by one with an honest and capable party that has a proven 10 year track record of excellence, honest government and service delivery . If our metros and municipalities work , the economy starts to grow , jobs are created and people start to invest in SA again. It is as simple as that!

As the second largest party, they are big enough to take the ANC on, especially if more opposition voters support them instead of spreading their opposition votes thin across a wide range of tiny, inconsequential parties which don't have any hope of making an impact.

Im white and have no time for the DA. I voted for them last election. But the older ive gotten and the more educated I have gotten in terms of macroeconomics. The more ive disliked them. They are not the party that is going to change this country, their policies are weak, some similar in to the ANCs. And their leaders are weak.
Herman Mashaba and Action SA are for me. Started his business out the boot of his car, had nothing, worked against all odds to build his business. No hand outs. Now is a multi millionaire. He cleaned up Jozi overnight when mayor and he wants to implement some serious policies that will help tackle poverty,generate wealth, tackle corruption etc. Hes no wishy washy kind of guy. Hersov misquotes the US second amendment, which says nothing about defence against the tyranny of the state. This is the exact wording, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Getting something as basic as this completely wrong casts doubts on his sources.

If the stated militia fails to adequately defend the state (it's citizens and property), that would be state tyranny due to neglect of a fundamental pillar of statehood. In such a situation its every man/women for themself, there family, there town, there city and their right to bear arms and defend themself and others is justified within the protectorat vacuum. The 2nd Amendment qualification towards the right to bear arms. Although the state has a duty towards protecting citizens, it cannot guarantee such protection. Therefore exists the right to bear arms as a final line of defence.

My biggest this with Mr Hersov is that his family made most of its money during the most darkest times of this country,Colonial and Apartheid .Why was it so possible for FDI to come to SA then ?.Also why are these billionaires immigrating overseas now when many of them stuck around during apartheid,does this mean they accepted the exploitation of South African then?.I'm not a politician but this is my genuine concern.

So absolutely no one can claim they wealthy purely due to the unknown potential around them. To generate wealth, you need the knowledge to know how to unlock potential. There is no free lunch.

Comments are all very well .. Rob Hersov has thrown down the gauntlet .. why do I see no "call to arms" .. no actions suggested. Every citizen can do something about the situation, even if just in the way we deal with each other. So lets do it!
We can do something - we must use our vote to strengthen the official opposition!! I am an immigrant who graduated from a South African University with a BEng Computer and Electronic Engineering and working as an engineer in the country right now, clearly this government has no clue to attract any foreign investment and talent to help build this economy, on issues like illegal immigrants instead of securing the boarders and putting action to deport everyone that's illegal they have turned focus on making it hard for the legal people to actually get permits or even permanent residence, while not even focusing on the actual issue of illegal immigrants. This is causing a lot of friction to a point where l fully agree that we should leave and we can always come back. Thanks for speaking the truth, there has been too much entitlement running the economy and the citizens are just not smart enough to realize what is good long term and what is not.

You get what you vote for and if you don't vote, or if you vote for small opposition parties instead of supporting the official opposition, then statistically you will benefit or reward the ANC/EFF very handsomely! They gain at our expense.

BUT (1) not in the country - in the ANC. who has just proven that they can not even manage their party, And (2), Investors who put money into the country for the wrong reasons. All they do is to take over existing businesses and stock them with people from their own overcrowded countries. There are no interest in the welfare of our country or our people.

Yes Rand was strong for the benefit of few. Majority had to see labour for pittance and relegated to Bantustan. For majority there is no glorius past no cuurent privilege and no hope for future. Just wondering though just how different things may have turned out had the Hersovs (and the Menels, Oppenheimers, Slacks, Flacks, Ogilvy-Thomsons, Glassenbergs etc etc) engaged in real, transformative investments in their glory years here, under the Nat regime none ever seemed to admit supporting, rather than expatriating the profits earnest here in Africa greatly helped by the system they all say they opposed.

A lot of what Hersov says makes sense, and it is hard to sometimes hear him say it. But he goes on and on about what a waste of time Political Science is, which shows that his mind is not as wide as he thinks it is.
Entrepreneurs are not the keepers of all knowledge. Many of them have raped the environment and exploited their workers. They evade taxes while exploiting subsidies and tax loopholes. They corrupt politicians and public servants, if only with lavish expensive meals, use of luxury apartments, junkets, and board seats. They get legislation amended in their favor via making big donations to corrupt political parties and government officials. I'm not saying Hersov has done any of that, only that the record of this kind of abuse by companies and business leaders is there for all to see. It happens in every country.
If everyone was required to study at least the essentials of Political Science (by all means give it another name) at school--to understand the role and importance of government and its institutions, the checks and balances, the need for management and oversight of the economy--we might have more prospect of electing responsible public representatives. It's tragic to see how in so many countries, the US included, a large part of the electorate is easily duped by propaganda, emotion, lies and disinformation. These are people who, for the most part, have not the faintest idea of how government works, and what their own responsibilities are to hold accountable the people they elect.
Political Science should be mandatory at a basic level of citizen responsibilities at high school, and we should invest in the institutions and the experts who study and refine political science as a field of philosophy and proper scientific comparison of the efficacy of the different systems of stable, effective government. It should be taken seriously, not mocked and dismissed as useless.
At its highest academic level, Political Science has the role of studying the history and efficacy of the world's different systems of government, representation, and fundamental human rights. The idea is to identify and study the best and most enduring ways of managing societies that value freedom and equal opportunity, with a fair and reasonable distribution of prosperity via decent shared basic services for all. If this isn't achieved, then prepare for voters to elect extremists that lie and make false promises.
We need business people, entrepreneurs, journalists.We also need talented, dedicated political scientists, economists, environmentalists, and many other -ists. Without research and knowledge, we can't have the best possible understanding of what might work best for our civilization. Hersov knows that. He refers to governance (or rather the lack of governance) all the time. I agree with him.
