I just did a test with the following configuration, - JVC GY-LS300 set to 4K 60P External and timecode set to FREE RUN (this is the only way to get 4K from the HDMI out and time code out since the LS300 only produces time code and 4K when recording internally to SD card normally ) . - Atamos Ninja Inferno 4K in and set to output down to 1080P which passes thru the time code and start-stop trigger. - 1080P into the Tascam DR-701D with the external time code and start stop trigger from the Ninja passed from the LS300. In this configuration the Ninja Inferno and DR-701D will happily sync time code and start and stop to the GY-LS300 trigger. With the GY-LS300 set to record internally to SD cards in 4K 24P, 25P 30P etc. the camera will only output 1080P (as its designed to do) via HDMI. With time code and start stop triggers directly to the DR-701D it works perfectly in sync to time code from the HDMI port from the GY- LS300. So this configuration with the Ninja Inferno between the camera and the DR-701D with the output resolution set to 1080P may also work with other cameras that output 4K and time code via the HDMI port. an excellent field recorder, with many great options, but i would love to see a review on what actually matters most, the audio quality. compare the audio quality of the new tascam dr-701d to the previous model tascam dr-70, to what most people have, the tascam dr-40, zoom h6 & zoom h4n, as well, compare to higher end field recorders like the mixpre and the sound devices 644. features are great, but what matters most is audio quality. if the new tascam dr-701d has the same quality as the zoom h6, then some would buy the h6 instead, as it has a smaller form factor, despite the great features of the tascam-dr-701d.

Have you tested using the HDMI features of this unit with a Atoms Shogun? Will this recorder work with a external recorder and a 4K signal? How should you daisy chain a camera, shogun and 701d so they all record at same time and stay in sync?

+B and H Hey Mark, I recently purchased a 701D from BH (great used price). I installed the latest firmware and noticed that Tascam has only recently supported 1080 at 60p via HDMI. Hopefully they are working to fully support 4K passthrough, do you have a contact at Tascam to confirm that this is the case? Also, could you confirm which port should be used to feed audio back to the camera (or a second cam). I tried using a 3.5mm connection from both the line out and the camera out jacks - I got a lot of machine noise in the audio, this may be because I had the gain setting too low.
So tracks 5&6 can only be used for the stereo mix recording. They cannot be used for the backup track when using dual recording mode (or anything else), is this correct?
Dual recording mode is not available if three or more channels or channels that do not make a stereo pair, such as 1&2 or 3&4 are set to record. Number of Tracks: 6 (4 Inputs + Stereo Mix) >Mark

Yeah not really a field recorder. More a DSLR youtube person type device.

Notable improvements to the Tascam DR-701D over the Tascam DR-70D include the addition of a timecode generator and HDMI inputs/outputs.
