@@bryanbuff Hmmm.. I’m just going off the idea of what you mention. SlideOver would look horrible on an external display lol. Heck, I stopped using SlideOver now cause how outrageously narrow it looks when “More Space” is enabled on the iPad. @@chidorirasenganz this is by no means a super strict reason why non M-series iPads can’t have external display support . Apple claims iPad Pro 2020 handles 4k output; apps can output to a external display (which means it can render a 4k output just fine). What apple could do and to me is way better than the current decision is to limit SM externally to 1080p AND on external display only, when plugged in and disabling it on iPad. Remove the monitor, and SM works on iPad again. Don’t be fooled: iPads (at least the 6GB iPad Pro 2020) can handle this setup. Been waiting a long time for external monitor support so am looking forward to the general release of 16.2. I totally agree about the sound defaulting to the monitor. it must be a minority of situations only where that is the preferred output
Great video with important insights about how external monitor support can be improved. When I connect my iPad to an external monitor, I go to control center to connect the output to the HomePods I have in my office. It only takes a few seconds and works for the entire time I’m hooked up to the external monitor. I hope you find this useful. Thanks for all the hard work you put in on your videos. It really shows. Bravo!!
I've been wanting an audio mixer for the iPad for the longest. One of the biggest annoyances of the iPad is that I cant have two audio sources playing at the same time. So I cant watch, say, a youtube video and a listen to spotify at the same time.
It will be really, REALLY, helpful to have a better support for musicians. Having a decent audio control support, with a decent interface (MFI?) support, be able to set a different mic and a different audio output at the same time, etc….
So external display is not supported on the 2020 iPad? I've been using Shiftscreen to get external display and would be disappointed if Apple is trying to get me to buy a new iPad in order to access that feature. Love your set up!
Looking forward to this working in 16.2. I just got a LG monitor and finally figured out why MacBook Air wasn't properly showing resolution and colors, but iPad still doesn't show proper colors (and far less available settings options to play with), so hoping with 16.2 it'll be make it easy to fix. I have certainly thought about the Apple Studio Display (and take the LG monitor into the office), but not sure I can justify the expense!
What do you mean that you “have” to use Stage Manager on the external monitor? Surely mirroring is still available right? I use mirroring all the time to display my iPad screen on a projector in front of a classroom. If that went away my teaching workflows would be severely disrupted.
My IPAD 12.9 internal speakers are not working when connected to HDMI. My LG 4k monitor does not have speakers and there is no option on IPAD control center to switch to the internal IPAd speakers. Why doesnt the ipad speaker work when connected to external monitor?
really shocked to hear this - I can stop complaining my ipad outputs on my tincan speakers in my monitor now… if there are no speakers, it absolutely should default to the internal iPad speakers (though I wonder if a HDMI protocol exists to check for the existence of speakers so maybe it’s not Apple’s fault?)
Isn't just using the Magic Keyboard more intuitive, like positioning the iPad between the monitor and you so that you you can use the Apple Pencil on the iPad like how it was showcased in the WWDC video.
@16:25 thank you for the tip - I had no idea you could select the audio output from the Control Center like that! my previous workaround literally was to go into Spotify (because the audio out selector is a h*ll of a lot more obvious and discovered changing it there changed it for other apps (eg. Nice overview, Christopher! I have pretty simply needs for external monitor support, either Split View for 2 apps, or full screen for one app - one would've thought they'd get that right first before embarking on Stage Manager.
Hi Christopher, I have been watching your videos for many years with constant enthusiasm. You are one of the reasons why I work exclusively with the iPad. I have also bought various accessories through your recommendations, but now that there is external screen support, I am reaching my limits. I connected my iPad 12.9 M1 1TB Cellular to the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock, everything works, but the screen is still mirrored. The screen is connected to the 27" screen via Mini HDMI to Displayport and it just doesn't work - even Apple Support can't help me. Do you have any ideas? Unfortunately, I don't have the option of connecting a USB C monitor directly. I would be very pleased to receive an answer from you. Many greetings from Germany - Rob

Hi Christopher. Great video (as always). In this video you mention that you use Lightroom to edit your photos. How do you manage your photos after editing them? Lightroom seems to only have a TB of storage available on the cloud (you can’t even pay for more) and we have already filled it, which is causing us to have to delete older pictures (even if they were good and we would have kept them otherwise). Do you have a video that covers this aspect of photo editing and management? If not, would you consider making one? TIA
Have you looked not in the Lightroom app but adobes website? You should be able to add on storage, I forget the limit but it’s fairly high. And expensive. Personally the day Lightroom Classic is available on an iPad is the day I immediately fork out for whatever is the top of the line model at that time.

I have the 2022 m2 iPad Pro and my external monitor keeps reverting back to mirror mode. contacted Apple and they said it is only for mirroring an external monitor and not an extension
You missed one point in my opinion. Many people don't use Ipad as an lap top, so if I go to vacation and I don't wan't to drag a keybord with me and I want to screencast display to a hotel room tv just to watch a movie on a big screen, can I do it in mirror mode without a keyboard and mouse? Other can you hook up 2 external displays through a dongle?
I like the automatic grid positioning, would love to see it as an option in the mac. I always manually center and align windows anyway. It’s just implemented very poorly.
I have an iPad Pro 11" 3rd Gen and for some reason my iPad will only mirror on my regular computer monitor when connected via HDMI. The option to extend the monitor isn't even there. It will work when I connect it the same way to the TV in the same room, but I want to be able to use it at my desk like a normal human. lol I have contact apple support on two different occasions and to say they are less than knowledgeable of the external monitor capabilities of the iPad would be a generous understatement. Disappointing.
The fact that I can't do Continuity Camera with the iPhone since they put such a shabby camera in my iPad Pro should be enough to drive me into the arms of a Surface Pro. It won't but it should. Well stated, you should be involved in iPad development because you just get it. Thanks for a great video!
Hi Chris. You mentioned when using iPad for video calls the studio monitor camera doesn’t work. Do the mics work or does everything only work from the iPad?
Some monitors can be rotated in a portrait orientation so you have more vertical screen space to see more of the document. Can the iPad’s external display work in this way?
Great video as always. I just upgraded to the 12.9 M2 iPad Pro and have been loving the external monitor support for my online class. I run Zoom on my iPad and have it situated just to the right of my monitor. On the monitor I open my syllabus, the textbook, and any other apps that come in handy on the fly during class. With that arrangement of the iPad and monitor, the camera literally sits on the left edge of the iPad and is slightly in front of the bottom right side of the monitor. Stage Manager does a really good job of keeping me framed so that I look like I’m looking in the direction of the camera regardless of which screen I’m looking at. I think it’s actually better than when I log in to the class on my MBP. The only downside of this set up is not being able to take notes with my Apple Pencil in the PDF of the syllabus. But overall, I think I like it better than any other solution I’ve tried.
I get that you need keyboard and mouse/trackpad, but what about if you're sharing your Mac's keyboard and trackpad? I'm guessing it won't work, but hoping it will.
The only issue I have had with external monitor is the the whole audio output, my monitor speakers..... SUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK. But so far outside of that its been great
Is it possible to use the external monitor and the iPad as a monitor in combination with the RD Clint app? I would like to have access to my working PC (Windows) via remote connection and use both monitors for this. Thanks for the great Video!
I have a question. I have iPad Pro M1, have monitor Lenovo L24i-30 (low budget), and I have Magic Keyboard. my iPad Pro run on iOS 16.5 but external display support does not work. my monitor does not respond. what happen? when I connect the monitor to my MBA M1, it work. could you help me please what wrong with my iPad?
To be clear…in order for an external monitor display set up to work. You need multiple things. First, iOS 16.2 (which is not currently available on the M1 iPad Pro 11), a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (it cannot be connect via usb to a USB C hub), and lastly a hub or dongle to connect the external display via USB C. Is this correct? I just checked for any iOS updates and it says I’m up today with 16.1.1 - please help!
It’s still buggy and crashed a lot. I don’t mind stage manager on the external monitor but there are some weird issues with the layout and mouse issues on the external monitor which requires moving to window back to the iPad so a finger touch can be used. Sometimes it thinks the iPad is the external monitor. Just lots of little weir issues. That being said I, the only time I need to turn my laptop on is for some web apps that just don’t work on the iPad and some apps that don’t have a iPad alternative
Potential solution to bypassing the monitor audio take-over issue. Purchase a hub that has a headphone jack built in as well, maybe that would allow the audio to work properly?
I started playing with stage manager just a bit today as I saw IOS 16.2 officially dropped. I happened to notice that I couldn’t get a 3440x1440 output to my external monitor. Using a usb C Hub with an HDMI output. I searched around and only seeming to find people using a secondary app for full screen fill but everything seems to be very dated to todays date. Any ideas? I really appreciate it, thanks!
I love ipados however I don’t understand honestly why would you want to have a monitor support for your ipad when I already have a mac on desk which can be much powerful. Can you clarify please what’s the need of it if it’s not a replacement of a mac computer ?
I guess it depends on which device you consider to be your primary device. For 2.5 years, I made iPadOS my primary device, got an external last week, thought it might be trivial to go back to macOS and it took less than 24 hours to say “hell no” and I’m happy with external monitor support (even on my 2018 model) knowing I can always remote into my mac (faster than switching inputs on my monitor for simple tasks) and that I’ll get the full experience when I upgrade to a M-powered iPadPro (and thinking of switching from 12.9 to 11 to maximize portability!)
I’d love to use my air pod pros with the second monitor in use, but since my USB-C portable monitor has internal speakers (which are clearly not as good as the iPad) it is hamstrung…big time! I hope that Apple gets this corrected promptly.
I didn't know that ext. display was stage manager only. That's extremely disappointing. Glad I found out now before I went and spent a grand on a new ipad. I loathe wasting space on a screen, so I tile my windows(on all platforms). I was counting on being able to do the normal split screen mode.
@@kevinmartins1669 there’s no Touch ID on the pros. Plus it would be easier to have it on the keyboard when you have it docked with a mouse and keyboard.
@@zachg3069 agreed. the range on FaceID has me have to lean in most of the time. it would be awesome to upgrade my ole skool Apple BT keyboard to the TouchID model and call it a day!
About the webcam problem, since the mac has it why not the iPad. Use your iPhone as the webcam for your iPad with that MagSafe adaptor that's on the monitor, aka even bigger selling reason for apple's ecosystem!
I have a workflow where I use a cheap no name usb-c hub. And yes the audio interface thing is annoying. Apple really needs to give us iMac-OS where we already run everything on an M1 so just make it behave like a Mac hardware wise. And UI for that matter. Give me a desktop when I plug in and go back to iPad when im running around. It really can’t be that hard to give us the ipad-MacBook-air equivalent.
I think over time Apple will add these features to the iPad. I went all in on the 16 gig M2 12.9 iPad knowing that it’s only going to get better with each OS release 😊
The iPadOS 16.1 update killed by ability to even mirror my iPad. I searched and searched and apparently it was something to do with it not liking my 3rd party hub with HDMI. Just ridiculous. I'm thinking about moving away from the Apple ecosystem altogether. I've been in it since my Mac Plus days, and it's just ridiculous. I don't know if this will be corrected in the 16.2 update; i'm not feeling inclined to spend even more money for a new hub after already throwing $1500 at my iPad Pro. Anyone else experiencing this?
If a USB Wireless Keyboard is connected to the Monitor, and the Monitor is linked to iPad with Type C, the keyboard and mouse working is really a luck. You won't be able to work it like a desktop unless you have a Bluetooth Keyboard connected to iPad.This glitch started with iPad OS 16.3.

It’s not a computer, because you cannot develop your own operating system on it. I know this will probably be ridiculed by someone, but old Apple II, old Commodore, those were computers. Because you could completely change their operating system. And I mean completely. My old computer from 1995 is a computer. Because you can write and build your own OS on it. iPad IS NOT a computer, because you cannot do whatever you want with it. You are completely dependent on apps from the App Store, and those are limited or non existent. You can build SOME apps yourself with Pythonista or Swift Playgrounds, but you are not free to do whatever you want. So IT IS NOT a computer. Now, and this is important, I don’t think that most people need a computer. There are many people using only an iPhone as their “computer” for everything. But gaming console is also not a computer, my smart scale is not a computer, my calculator is not a computer, my TV is not a computer… and my iPad is also NOT A COMPUTER. It isn’t. It is completely closed and limited piece of consumer technology…. NOT A COMPUTER.

Hi. Thanks for the vid. How can I make a full screen with iPad and HDMI dongle? It just mirrors the iPad screen on the monitor, not 16:9 ratio.
You have to wait for iOS 16.2
I have the 2022 m2 iPad Pro and my external monitor keeps reverting back to mirror mode. contacted Apple and they said it is only for mirroring an external monitor and not an extension
You missed one point in my opinion. Many people don't use Ipad as an lap top, so if I go to vacation and I don't wan't to drag a keybord with me and I want to screencast display to a hotel room tv just to watch a movie on a big screen, can I do it in mirror mode without a keyboard and mouse? Other can you hook up 2 external displays through a dongle?
This feature with camera we have because it made for security. M1 processor ask camera for Face ID. If it can be used from another camera ??
Can this work on a TV setup? Can the iPad use a TV as an external monitor?
So the use of external monitor as an extended display is only available if we have the beta?
I have an ipad 9th gen 64gb variant. If not wrong it's with a13 chip. Does it have external monitor support?? If yes then how to use it??
The only issue I have had with external monitor is the the whole audio output, my monitor speakers..... SUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK. But so far outside of that its been great
Yeah that bugs me
This update and other updates lately seem to be DRAGGING.... can't wait
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
can you use only the external monitor and the built-in display off?
sorry, posted this question half way into your video, so obviously no clam shell mode.
can you use an old imac as a monitor ?
while I absolutely think this would have been the “green” thing for Apple to do - sadly, not without major hardware modfications.
Is it possible to use the external monitor and the iPad as a monitor in combination with the RD Clint app? I would like to have access to my working PC (Windows) via remote connection and use both monitors for this. Thanks for the great Video!
Totally!
@@ChrisLawley thank you !
Souds really great but Apple have messed up the touch display on iPad with iPad OS16 making the touch unresponsive
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
hi since the studio display runs at high resolution, does the ipad pro 12.9 m1 heat up and lag?
Does gaming work?
What about gaming with external monitor support?
Hi there 😊 if I may ask, at time 12.28, what keyboard/caps combo is this on the right? The one without the letters? Cheers from Switzerland. Raphi 🤗🍀
I have a question please. Can you setting up resolution on your external monitor ? thanks.
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
I have a question.
Somebory knows how "Jump Desktop" works on external monitor?! its ok?
can split-view on the ipad be preset? or is it something you have to manually turn off every time you plug into an external display?
I thought they made stage manager available for the 2018 and 2020 iPad models as well, is that happening?
Stage Manager on iPad only. Not on external screen…
U can have more than 4 apps opened at the same time, it’s on diff stages lol, I like stage manager, u just got to treat it like a stage,
I didn't know that ext. display was stage manager only. That's extremely disappointing. Glad I found out now before I went and spent a grand on a new ipad.
I loathe wasting space on a screen, so I tile my windows(on all platforms). I was counting on being able to do the normal split screen mode.
With using the Apple display with iPad can you use the display’s built in camera speakers etc?
Typed while watching. No one talks about this
@@justchecking9611 surely you eventually heard his mention that it is kinda silly iPadOS doesn’t use the Apple Display camera by default!
"It is a computer. It computes data" Haha Love it. Thanks for the all the vids. Using the Air 5 and it works very well for much of my work.
🤔So, how was the portrait-mode support?
wondering the same thing too. tomorrow, I’m going to experiment w a monitor that does internal rotation for you and see what happens…
you will need bidirectional communication,
if you want to use the webcam on the monitor.
which I assume Thunderbolt handles just fine!
The iPad: It is a computer because it computes data.... GREAT! My laptop if officially gone! Thanks Chris!
I love your content. You explain things in a way a non-tech person can understand and you are not a slave to the algorithm. Keep up the good work!
Id love to see apple bring Touch ID support to iPads with their new wireless keyboards like they have for M1 macs
Why on the keyboard since it's on the ipad ?
@@kevinmartins1669 there’s no Touch ID on the pros. Plus it would be easier to have it on the keyboard when you have it docked with a mouse and keyboard.
The iPad already has a biometric. Unless it’s the Air the Pros don’t need it unless you’re in clamshell mode
@@zachg3069 agreed. the range on FaceID has me have to lean in most of the time. it would be awesome to upgrade my ole skool Apple BT keyboard to the TouchID model and call it a day!
An external touch id device sounds awesome to place on your desk.
Man, my M1 iPad Pro restarts frequently when using external monitor support.
Beta software life! 😂🤷♂️
The conclusion is that we should stick with macOS. Way too many hoops to work with iPad full time, and that’s probably by design
We'd appreciate it if we see a new video for iPad apps walkthrough 🙃
I think over time Apple will add these features to the iPad. I went all in on the 16 gig M2 12.9 iPad knowing that it’s only going to get better with each OS release 😊
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
welcome to the “all in” club! 😁
Thats a expensive investment! No matter what you want to do now your not losing performance!
11 min mark - exactly what I wanted to hear about. External monitor + Lab22
Apple has fixed the Crashes on The IPADOS 16.2 Beta 3.
Nice vid. Such a disappointment it’s restricted for M chips…
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
hey dude!!!. put the IPAD above the MONITOR in order you to use ipad while on video call!!!!
Thanks ! feel free to reach out, i have something for you🎉
Apple should let us choose which os to use mac os or ipad os.
Insert the sad face 😥my iPad Pro 2020 is not getting external monitor support.
I just activate the stage manager on my laptop and I hate it 😂… so, no external monitor with the iPad for me please
NOT A COMPUTER.
ah - you’ve thought long and hard about “what is a computer?” i see - i still think it will remain a philosophical question until the end of time but I like where you’ve started :)
totally agree with your sentiments, I bought the original 2010 iPad and it’s just a doorstop, it would be nice if I could just wipe it clean and make it into something useful without all the limitations of XYZ not being supported on iOS5.1.1
I would say a jailbroken console is a computer by your definition as people do put Linux, emulators, homebrews on them.
