    2. Two shot Tony Blair and Bill Morris (leader of Transport and General Workers' Union) as Morris introduces Blair (UPSOUND: (English) "In the light of that information I now invite the Prime Minister to make a statement to the Congress."
    3. Blair goes up to speak
    4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Blair, British Prime Minister
"As Bill has just informed you there have been the most terrible shocking events taking place in the United States of America within the last hour or so including two hijacked planes being flown deliberately into the World Trade Centre. I'm afraid we can only imagine the terror and the carnage there and the many many innocent people that will have lost their lives. I know you will want to join with me in sending the deepest condolences to President Bush and to the American people on behalf of the British people at these terrible events. This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today. It is perpetrated by fanatics who are utterly indifferent to the sanctity of human life, and we the democracies of this world are going to have to come together to fight it together and eradicate this evil from our world. Delegates, I hope you will understand that I don't believe it would be appropriate to carry on the speech I was going to give you today. I know I have issued copies of the speech, we will make sure that all delegates get copies of the speech, but I think it inappropriate to give that speech here now. I will obviously want to carry on discussions that we've had about the issues that concern us. I will now return to London and once again I thank you for your indulgence here. I'm very very sorry it has turned out the way it has but I know that, as I say, you would want to join with me in offering our deepest sympathy to the American people and our absolute shock and outrage at what has happened."
    5. Blair returns to his seat to applause
    STORYLINE:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair has reacted with shock and outrage to the news on Tuesday of attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.
Blair was speaking at the TUC Congress in Brighton where he had been due to address delegates about his plans for public services.
But he said in the circumstances it would be inappropriate and instead he was returning to London immediately.
Blair sent deepest condolences to President Bush and to the American people on behalf of the British people.
And he condemned the new evil of mass terrorism, calling upon world democracies to unite and eradicate it from the world.
Two planes crashed into the upper floors of both World Trade Centre towers minutes apart on Tuesday morning in what the President George W. Bush said was an apparent terrorist attack, blasting fiery, gaping holes in the 110-storey buildings.
Within the hour, an aircraft crashed on a helicopter landing pad near the Pentagon, and the West Wing of the White House was evacuated amid threats of terrorism.

I understand it's impossible for many british to understand the American point of view in context, after all for providing when combined with Australia just 3% of the coalition force that went to Iraq, Blair has lost most credentials and faced three inquiries spanning almost two decades of investigations into whether that was indeed a just cause, while W. Bush in America faced nothing of the sort here without even much desire for such in the public besides the usual fringe.
However, despite Bush being unpopular as he is now in hindsight and such- that should be put aside for a minute. For many decades now in prosperous times and in crisis, most countries with perhaps some that owe gratitude (France, Germany) have done little more than lip service for political gain or courtesy with others resorting to use of old scapegoats.
So following our greatest tragedy, seeing an old ally bearing great political differences with Bush toss those all aside to put forth words of commitment to our cause and justice so *strong* that its a great potential political risk- AND actually mean them, follow them through with action, was so *meaningful* to all of America, especially id say to those of us who hated Bush then and felt the U.S. isolated internationally.
I get it was frustrating for the british who deeply despise Bush in perhaps an incategorical manner, but we didn't see this as dedication to whatever Bush wanted to do- but instead dedication to the cause of America and whatever that might mean even if it spells diaster for Blair, not out of any hope for political gain but in solidarity with Americans and to give real meaning to his words *"We were with you at the first. And we will stay with you until the last"*

So much hate against Bush and Blair in the comments. The US, UK and the rest of the NATO nations didn't start this war. Terrorist forces under Bin Laden chose to make a 2nd attempt at blowing up the World Trade Center and this time actually succeeded killing thousands of civilians from all over the world. NATO decided that the attack against the US by foreign actors was indeed a legitimate reason, for the first time in history, to invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter ... mutual defense. The US and UK did not go to war with Afghanistan or Iraq ... NATO did after informing the United Nations that they have voted on and agreed to action under Article 5 in accordance with International law.

Youd prob say it was the WMDs, but we never would have gone in there without the fear and anger sparked by 9/11. Afghanistan has long history of meddling by britain, youre right on that. Also sparks another interesting question: if we went into afghanistan just because they were sheltering osama bin laden, why didnt we do anything to Pakistan when they were literally housing him in a compound in the same area as their West Point equivalent?

Did it cost lives, yup, a lot, but I am not sure lives were not saved by removing him before he tried again against Iran, Kuwait, or Saudi, or any of his other neighbors. The missile capabilities in Iraq were advancing and they were close to having a missile that could hit London, Bonn, Paris, and Rome. I couldn't believe that there were a group of ppl willing to kill innocent people they don't know and willing to kill themselves in the process. I believe the last little bit of innocence we had as teens (for those of us who were teens at the time) was lost that day. It was also the day I knew why my mom was proud to be an American Army Vet, why she was glad I was born in Army Reynolds Hospital & why she named my little sister who was 10 at the time America. what happened 9-11-01 was tragic, but it pales in comparison to what the Germans did to the Jewish faith. It pales on comparison to the Ireland famine, the Crusades were also far more bloody. We were not helpless, we were foolish. We thought we would not be attacked, we were wrong, certainly not helpless. Fact that there has not been another attack of this nature since demonstrates we are not helpless. We scared the crap out of the world with our response, depending on what figures you use, the terroists that day caused the deaths of 100 to 130 times the number of their fellow muslims then they killed in the US. That is hardly helpless.

I am from Kenya, I think the response from Britain had nothing to do with root with America, it was purely humanity in British people despite their own bad history.
Actually here in Kenya, where the US is very much loved, Kenya stood with Americans just like UK, you would think Kenya is 53rd state of the US.
From offering a airbase if America needed one, to praying for America we showed our best humanity to Americans.
Probably because of our own terror attacks experience earlier in 1998 we understood the pain of America more than anyone else.

I was in college when this happened. I was sitting outside my girlfriend's classroom when I heard someone had crashed into the pentagon. History was my next class and the teacher looked at the television and then looked at us and, in a somber voice, said "there's no class today." I gave my girlfriend a ride home after that. I think school was closed for about a week or two. For months all you saw on the news networks were video of cleaning up the rubble from the crash sites. Everyone was in revenge mode, that's all that really mattered. We felt we were attacked by terrorists and we wanted to fight back. Everyone was sure the CIA knew where Bin Laden was and we could take him out any time. 10 years, 2 wars, and 4,000 lives later we finally got the bastard. But I don't think it really matters. Religious zealots want to die for their cause so when you kill one, especially a leader, it only inspires more of the sheep to radicalize and commit further acts of terror. 20 years later I find myself wondering what's the use of nations in the first place? I think we need to drop the borders and be one planet. We live with 7 billion other people on this planet yet we think our borders separate us. They don't separate us - Even with your damn wall. In a world where nukes can be shot from under water or from outer space, there are no safe spaces anymore. When transportation methods are advancing, cyber warfare methods are also advancing so in a real sense there is no such thing as borders anymore. Walls don't stop viruses, or nuclear missiles. To be clear I'm not advocating in any way shape or form that we take any treasonous act against our respective nations but I'm just trying to tell you I'm tired of the shit that is going on in the world and I wish we would start working together to solve all our global problems rather than shooting at one another so Bill Lumberg's stock can go up a quarter of a point (office space reference for my generation).
