    Ignore the haters being judgey about using sugar. You're a GREAT mom who works super hard to feed your kids well. A little sugar doesnt hurt anything.

    I am Turkish and yogurt is an everyday ingredient in our cuisine. So many moms make it at home. Yogurt needs a little more than 3 hours to set properly, at least 4-5 on a warm day and we actually do it in pots, with the lid open so it sets thicker and does not get sour. I'd recommend you to try putting your jars in a slightly warm oven without the lids where they won't be disturbed. Just heat the oven a little and then turn it off. Cover them with a tablecloth inside the oven, it both helps retain the heat and lets vapours escape so you have a thicker yogurt. Once they're set, move them to the refrigerator without shaking ( I cringed when you tilted the jars, yogurt keeps setting as it cools:)) let them cool at least overnight without the lids, then put the lids on. You'll definitely see the difference! And we never keep yogurt for a month, I make mine once a week, fresh is the best! Love your channel and your hard work!

      Thankyou so much for the tips Leyla T 😊. This is the only way it worked for me. Yogurt turned out perfect. Tried 2 more ways before this , yogurt came out runny both times. But not this time 💃🙌. Yay lol.

    I place my home made yogurt still in the pot in my completely cold oven overnight. Shut the door and in the morning it's ready to put into containers in the fridge. In the past I have also wrapped it in a big warm blanket, but the cold oven method is way easier. No awkward wrapping and sometimes spilling. Blessings and thanks for posting! Just found your channel. Love hearing kitchen tips from other mamas. I would be interested in hearing your food budget/grocery costs. I'm always looking to improve and tighten up that budget. - Katrina

    Wow... I have watched probably every yogurt video on UA-cam and yours is by far the easiest AND the best! I also prefer sugar instead of agave syrup which is supposed to be sweeter than sugar and diabetic friendly but I don’t think it is sweeter plus unless you are straining it for Greek style it can make it more runny. Of course you have the brilliant idea of freezing it, so I will revisit agave and freeze it, I think then it won’t be runny. Thank you so much! 😊💜

    Already flavored/sweetened commercial yogurt has more grams of sugar per ounce than soda, so you totally are doing better to make your own.

      Jenn's Corner Greek yoghurt is what’s left when you separate out the whey from the rest of the yoghurt. So it’s a lot thicker than regular yoghurt.

      Plain yogurt doesn't have any sugar added, its just milk and culture. But i dont see nothing wrong with adding a little bit of sugar for sweetness, they all seem healthy.

    great idea! I would probably replace the sugar with a small box of vanilla pudding mix sugar free or regular...this way if they want an ice pop type it would be like a frozen pudding pop and hold its shape a little better...super neat way to make yogurt! Hi Amy! Just watched your video on batch-making yogurt. I've made yogurt myself a while back, and kept it up for a month before I gave it up; I was making 1 2L jar (2 in reality, but I like my yogurt thick, so I was straining it a couple of hours) and I found I needed to make yogurt every 1.5 weeks. That was at a time I was only making it for myself and my partner, and we've started a family now so it's highly unsustainable...
    Your method is really simple and quick, but the information I craved the most was 1- how do you store so much yogurt, 2- how long does it last your family / which frequency you're making it? Because I first saw a 1 month freezer meal video of you doing this recipe and I was wondering how yogurt could be stored and kept for a month! Anyways, really enjoy your videos, thanks for all the inspiration :)

    You might find if you use a better yogurt meaning it has listed on the container multi live strains the yogurt will come out thicker, you can also add 2 cups of dry non fat milk to the liquid milk. That adds extra protein and will also aid in thicker yogurt. Fage' is about the best brand to use, if you read ingredients many contain one strain of culture and have gelatin as a thickener.

    I use the cooler method also but, I leave mine in the cooler for longer (about 17hrs total) I then put it in the fridge. If I want really thick yogurt like Greek yogurt, I will strain it through a piece of muslin to drain some of the whey out of it. If I drain it long enough I can get yogurt cheese. It is a spreadable cheese that you can add stuff to if you want & eat it on frackers.

    The "weaning off" of sugar is a great idea.
    Judgy commenters, this stuff is sour without sugar. This is not regular store bought yogurt that already has tons of sugar or sweetener in it. And you want everyone to like it, slowly weaning off is better than using sweetener or going without any sugar.

    This is awesome! Thank you for this! We spend a small fortune on yogurt,and when we have it everyone eats it so quickly! I love the idea of it being able to control the amounts and type of sweetener as well. I've noticed alot of the "light" versions sweeten with aspartame which several of us are allergic to!(heart palapations,muscle spasms etc) I'm going to give this a try. Thank you again :)

    This is a great way to make a bunch of yogurt:). I learned to make it with powdered milk, and you can make it thicker by adding more powder. Have you ever tried taking the plain yogurt and putting it in a cloth lined strainer and letting it drain for a few hours? It makes a wonderful thick almost cream cheese, or quark, as it’s called in Europe. I use it for sour cream in recipes, or ricotta, or a soft cream cheese spread. I love your videos and the joy you find in your roll as home maker and mother. Thank you so much!! And thank you for the good ideas, I have 8 and am always looking for ideas!

    Thanks for filming this! It was interesting to see your process. And love the fruit sauce idea. I make yogurt in my Instantpot, and then strain it (big coffee filter inside a strainer works fantastic) to make it thick. I like the Yoplait Oui, and adding a smidge of sweetened condensed milk to homemade makes it very similar. Making it myself also allows me to use a lactose free milk, which my daughter does much better with. (And ignore the haters about sugar. Sweetened homemade still has WAY less than store bought).

    • @amymaryon
      @amymaryon  6 років тому

      Thank u for your words. When do you add the sweetened condensed milk? Before serving or when it goes into jars ? Thanks again

    • @lynn2574
      @lynn2574 6 років тому

      I’ve done both, actually. I even mixed it in with the milk and culture once by accident. Still made delicious yogurt. A few weeks ago I found a squeeze bottle of it alongside the cans in the baking isle. That was nice for sweetening servings vs a batch or container. I did about half a can of sweetened milk per gallon of milk. That was about right for us.

    Hey Amy; attempted to make fresh yogurt with Almond milk. It didn't solidify at all! It's almond milk with the taste of plain yogurt! I thought for sure ANY milk could be used but I was mistaken. Thank God I only tried a half gallon's worth. It separated on me too! I shook it thinking that it would help solidify but maybe I did something wrong! Obviously!!! If I let it sit longer, would a miracle happen? Lol!!! Lori

    • @amymaryon
      @amymaryon  6 років тому

      It cooled and didn't solidify? Thanks for letting us know

    • @lorifive
      @lorifive 6 років тому

      Yeah, it did not solidify. When I took it out of the cooler to put in the fridge, it was separated. I shook it and put it in the fridge until the next day. Even two days later, it's separated and not solidifying! I won't let this deter me. I will use whole milk next time (half gallon)! Just to make sure I get it right! Don't want to lose any more than I have already. ;-( Thank you again for your videos! You're a 5-star momma! Lori Keep up the great work!!

      She only incubated her yogurt for 3 hours. Usually it is 6-8 hours for yogurt. Also, it is not necessary to heat the almond milk before incubation. Look up vegan yogurt recipes

    Great method , I add a little powdered milk into my yogurt mix it definitely helps make it thicker ...more like greek style . I also use col UHT milk not sure you can get that in the states i use this because you don't need to heat as its already pasteurised etc. I am new to your channel and love it , you have the right balance of talking and cooking :)

    Hello! Thank you for the recipe! So far I did yogurt twice and it got the right consistency, but it had no taste. It wasn't tangy like the ones store bought.
    I've noticed it gets tangier if it's left in the fridge for like 4 days. Any idea how to speed up this process? This is the recipe I've used:
    - heat milk up to 185F
    - let cool down to 105F
    - add 2 tablespoons of yoghurt to the milk
    - leave it covered on a radiator for 12 hours
    While on the radiator, the milk temp was constant at around 102F, for 12 hours. Milk was homogenized, pasteurized, 1.5% fat, store bought. Thank you!!

    I love making my own yogurt. I used to do it exactly like you mentioned, but I found 2 yogurt makers (with glass jars) for a buck or two at a garage sale and it is awesome. I only have 4 kids, though. Do you have any recipes to flavor your yogurt, aside from smoothies? I've tried jam. My kids like lime custard mixed in, but it's hard to find. I've made my own custard before, but it isn't the same. Anyways, thanks for the post.

    For those who want to make yogurt but do not have a thermometer here is how my mother taught me to make it:
    1. heat the milk until it starts to simmer at the sides
    2. remove the heat and let it cool enough for you to stick your pinky in it and count to ten slowly without burning your finger
    3. mix half a cup of yogurt per liter of milk with some of the milk in a separate bowl and add to the rest of the milk
    4. Pour into glass jars and leave in a warm place over night. (my mum has a designated yogurt blanket that she overs the jars with.
    ENJOY!

    Fellow canner here, lol. Do you think that there would be any issues with jarring them up in 1/2 gallon jars as opposed to the quarts you use? Wondering if they would take too long to cool down to fridge temps to thicken properly. Trying this out today and will do quart jars (it's not like I don't have a million anyways lol), but the half gallon jars would take up much less room in our fridge. I think I'll do one half gallon jar just to see (I'm in PA so milk is much more expensive than your area and wasting 3 gallons of milk would have this mama bawling).

    • @amymaryon
      @amymaryon  6 років тому +1

      Oh I don't know.. Hmmm I think it would be fine because the temperature goes down to 125 and stays that way in the cooler. You might have to let it sit longer I let mine sit for 4 hours and it was thicker :) this last time

    just two questions, why didn't you take the pot's out of the cold water when you reached the temp. and why didn't you use a funnel to pour the yogurt into the jar's????, and just one more thing, can you use flavored yogurt for the starter?? thank's for the video, and you have a lovely family, Nicky

    You are a superwoman!! All those kids and still being able to find energy to get up at 5 am!! :) The only difference I would make is not to add SUGAR!! Bananas are sweet enough in the smoothie. Or use splenda. There isn't weening off because sugar is addictive. So as long as it in there, the more the kids will crave. Great job SW!

    • @amymaryon
      @amymaryon  6 років тому +1

      I agree wholeheartedly about the sugar. We are weaning back. 5 am is not always my morning startup, only when I have lots to get done :)
