Cost of living: Inflation hits 40-year high as food prices rise

  • Inflation is the bad news that keeps on coming. Today's figures show that it has crept up again to just over 9 per cent, the worst in four decades.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But behind that headline number others even more alarming ones lurk - like a 32 per cent increase in the price of petrol and double digits for staple foods like bread and meat.
Inflation is a global ogre but it is worse here than in the rest of the G7 and is expected to last longer. It has also hits the poorest hardest. So what now?

they arent, the average pensioner has more money than the average working 30 something. this is the first time this ever happened. i assume its the ones who didnt bother to pay into a pension like all us young people are forced to? plus we are paying their final salary schemes whilst ours arent worth the paper they are written on. i will have to live into my 90s to get back what i put in. yet us gen-x are predicted to die YOUNGER than our parents. another historic first. plus we have to work to 70+ now

UA-camrs have jobs because people stream their work and like it therefore they make money from it... just because you don't like it doesn't mean its not a legitimate way of making money.... the main reason for the current rate of inflation is the widening wealth gap and the % of money in society that is going more towards ceos and shareholders ans moving away from the lower down workers

These people love to attack pensioners. British pensioners are worse off than about all their European and American counterparts, Further, many pensioners live in poverty. Those with savings have seen their savings depleted in the past twelve years because interest rates have been so low. It is right and proper that old people who have worked hard all their lives be given some protection. The attitudes of the interviewer and the interviewee in this clip are extremely disappointing. 👎

@@paxundpeace9970 The only pensioners better off than working people are people who have fat company pensions and who are very rich anyway. Most pensioners don't fall into that category. Further, Pensioners' savings have been decimated in the past twelve years of extremely loe, almost non-existent, interest rates. And please son't come to me with the nonsense about the stock market gains. For the very well-off, yes they will have gained. But I would wager that most pensioners a.) don't have many stock markets investments, b.) don't want the risk that investing on the stock market involves. When you reach a certain age, you want security, not risk.

@@Jazzfunkmaster The Tories have always been tight when it comes to state pensions. Though I wasn't a big fan of Tony Blair, he did want to do something better for pensioners to bring state pensions up to the European level. And Cameron did introduce the 'Triple Lock'. But BoJo put it on hold last year thereby losing an 8% increase for pensioners. I notice he's changed his tune a bit lately. Now there's talk of a 10% next year. But that will only be about in line with inflation; and it will be in arrears, too.
The problem as I see it is that everyone talks of state pensions as though they were a state benefit. THEY ARE NOT! You have to pay into the system to get any pension at all. And paying into it has been largely mandatory. The more you pay in, the more you get out.
The only time a state pension becomes a state benefit, and even then only for a temporary period (for most people) is when a person becomes unemployed. Then, they gat a paltry sum of money-compare Germany's generous unemployment benefit system!-and the stamp is paid for that period on the employees behalf. At least, that is how I understand it.

Living expenses have always been lower in England compared to Scandinavian countries. But Scandinavians have salaries that match the cost of living. Most European countries are not expensive for groceries. But people who live on welfare, generally live hand to mouth. In England, it was possible to live well on welfare, 15 years ago but not anymore.
The UAE has low living expenses which is why people enjoy living there. The only costly expense is rent, which can often be negotiated and decreased a bit. Pakistan is a country which used to have low living expenses but the past 15 years, groceries and bills have soared due to inflation. Every year, prices go up. Nothing is at the price you bought it a year ago.
People with high income jobs can still live well, in England. But some people have a bad habit of complaining about expenses, whether they’re on welfare or high income, irrespective of the economy, and even if the price is low and they’re getting a good deal. Such people, often do not bother searching for the best price available. They just whine about bills and the price they paid, without searching for a better price. That’s an attitude problem and failure to understand the economy and competitive pricing.
People who whine about bills that can be reduced, every other month, just want an issue to complain about. Some people have been whining about bills for 10-40 years irrespective of the economy. Such people cannot cope with daily life, regular bills and are often financially disorganised. They’re the type who cannot spend even when refusing to do so, puts their health, employment and sanity at risk.
Just because they are adults and have families. It does not mean that they can budget, cope with regular bills, find the best price online or lower their expenses effectively. The world is filled with people, who have paid bills for decades but have overpaid. People who whine about every expense, are often free loaders or prefer someone else to pay, which is why they seek welfare, live with their parents or reduce necessary expenses.
Such people do not have genuine concerns. Genuine concerns are addressed with solutions. We cannot fix the economy but we can choose to pay low prices for the same quality. We can use green energy. We can shop online. That’s on us.
Brits are used to grocery shopping for snacks, ice cream, pastries, biscuits, fried food, crisps and chocolate which technically doesn’t come under groceries. That is why food inflation has impacted them. People can still buy basic groceries such as eggs, milk, bread, cheese, vegetables, fruit and meat at competitive prices. They just can’t buy all the extra stuff that they used to and that’s impacting their daily life. Energy prices and petrol prices are probably affecting people more than grocery bills. Perhaps work from home and online schooling can be introduced like it was during covid 19.
